Antibacterial activity is the most widely studied aspect of plant extracts. Antibiotics extensively produced and consumed in large quantities, have proved to be problematic due to various types of adverse effects. The development of bacterial resistance to currently available antibiotics has necessitated the search for new antibacterial agents. One of the alternative strategies for fighting antibiotic- resistant bacteria is the use of natural antimicrobial substances such as plant extracts. We tested the antimicrobial activity of nine extracts from different plants against pathogenic bacteria

In this paper, the differences in mechanical strength tested during the static tensile and compression test of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), European larch (Larix decidua) and Norway spruce (Picea abies) wood exposed to continuous soaking in water with a salinity of 7‱ were determined. The value of salinity corresponded to the average salinity on the Polish Baltic coast. This paper also aimed to examine the content of mineral compounds absorbed during four cycles of two weeks each. The essence of the statistical research was to identify the effect of the mineral range compounds and salts d

Various mechanisms of plant organ movements have been reported, including the close association of two layers with expressed differences in hygroscopic properties. Following this principle, actuator beams composed of thin veneers out of normal and compression wood cut from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) were prepared by using two types of adhesives. The mismatch of the swelling properties of the two layers in tight combination resulted in an expressed bending deflection in response to set humidity changes. The resulting curvatures were measured and analyzed by the Timoshenko bi-metal-model,

Objectives. Helicobacter pylori infection is common and can lead to precancerous gastric lesions. Standard antibiotic therapy has a failure rate of more than 25% from antibiotic resistance. The primary aim of this observational pilot study was to test the feasibility of a large-scale clinical trial of Conifer Green Needle Complex (CGNC) to treat precancerous gastric lesions. Secondary aims were to investigate H. pylori infection, stomach function, and histopathology of the gastric mucosa. Methods. A tablet form of CGNC (extracted from Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies (L) Karst) was prescribed

Tomicus piniperda is an economically important pine bark beetle infesting European Pinus spp. stands. We sequenced and analyzed 797 bp of the mitochondrial genome from individuals obtained from 34 populations sampled throughout the European range. We obtained 36 haplotypes, from which a haplotype network was constructed. In the Iberian Peninsula, high-genetic variability was detected with numerous endemic haplotypes. In contrast, the other European populations were less diverse with a single haplotype predominating from the Pyrenees to Scandinavia. Nevertheless, even within Europe, a few popul

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria has stimulated the search for plant-derived antimicrobials with alternative modes of action. This study investigated whether chemically distinct essential oils (EOs) differ in their antibacterial effects and their ability to modulate bacterial efflux-associated processes in clinically relevant MDR pathogens. The chemical compositions of tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia), lemon (Citrus limon), Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), and Eucalyptus radiata EOs, as well as their blend, were characterized by gas chromatography-ma

Pine forests in northern China are heavily infested by wood-boring insects, the cryptic life cycles of which make conventional control measures ineffective. We addressed this threat with Sp@SNP, a silicon-based nanopesticide synthesized by polymerization of silane monomers, in which spirotetramat (Sp) was physically entrapped at a loading of 19.92%. The resulting 118-nm nanoparticles showed exceptional water dispersibility, rapid plant uptake, and excellent penetration into the insect cuticle. Sp@SNP selectively released its active ingredient, spirotetramat, in an acid-triggered manner, wherea

Proanthocyanidins (PAC) are a class of plant secondary metabolites commonly found in the diet that have shown potential to control gastrointestinal nematode infections. The anti-parasitic mechanism(s) of PAC remain obscure, however the protein-binding properties of PAC suggest that disturbance of key enzyme functions may be a potential mode of action. Glutathione-S-transferases (GSTs) are essential for parasite detoxification and have been investigated as drug and vaccine targets. Here, we show that purified PAC strongly inhibit the activity of both recombinant and native GSTs from the parasit

In the northeastern part of Estonia, near the town of Narva, there are two large oil shale fueled power plants, Baltic PP and Estonian PP. On burning oil shale the main atmospheric pollutants are fly ash, sulphur oxides and nitrogen oxides. The radial increment was measured and concentrations of Ca and Cu were estimated in the stemwood of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) from four sites in the influence area of the Narva power plants. Increment cores were taken also from two sites in an unpolluted area located 112 and 120 km northwest from the Estonian PP. The stands selected for investigation

Measurements of leaf wettability (contact angle), amounts of epicuticular wax and of surface dust are reported for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies (L) Karst) trees growing at 12 sites in Europe from SW Germany to NE Scotland. At each site, three year classes (current year, 1 and 2-year-old) of needles were sampled from the mid-crown of up to 12 trees. Trees were selected at random from two strata, those showing visible decline symptoms (i.e. loss of needles or discoloration) and those apparently healthy. Needles for analysis were taken from apparently healthy (g

Biopolymers derived from natural sources are sustainable, non-toxic, and biodegradable, making them attractive alternatives to fossil-based polymers. Among these, lignin has garnered significant attention due to its potential in adhesive applications. In this study, lignin was extracted from redwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) sawdust using an alkaline delignification process and subsequently modified through propargylation and silanization. Comprehensive characterization using FTIR, solubility tests, TGA/DTG, 1H NMR, SEM-EDX, and contact angle measurements confirmed significant improvements in phys

Acidophytic, oligotrophic lichens on tree trunks are widely considered to be the most sensitive biota to elevated concentrations of atmospheric ammonia (NH3). We studied the relationships between measured NH3 concentrations and the composition of macrolichen communities on the acidic bark of Pinus sylvestris and Quercus robur and the base-rich bark of Acer platanoides and Ulmus glabra at ten roadside and ten non-roadside sites in Helsinki, Finland. NH3 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations were higher at the roadside than non-roadside sites indicating traffic as the main source of NH3 and

The epidemiology of yeast infections and resistance to available antifungal drugs are rapidly increasing, and non-albicans Candida species and rare yeast species are increasingly emerging as major opportunistic pathogens. In order to identify new strategies to counter the threat of antimicrobial resistant microorganisms, essential oils (EOs) have become an important potential in the treatment of fungal infections. EOs and their bioactive pure compounds have been found to exhibit a wide range of remarkable biological activities. We investigated the in vitro antifungal activity of nine commercia

The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common bacterial sexually transmitted infection globally, with approximately 131 million new cases each year. It contributes to widespread reproductive health issues, including infertility and chronic pelvic pain. The unique cell morphology and biphasic life cycle pose challenges to their effective eradication. Guided by the identification of essential oils (EOs) capable of suppressing C. trachomatis intracellular growth, this study evaluated the antichlamydial properties of the monoterpene limonene and its metabolites peri

Since 1994 the nickel-processing plant at the Cu-Ni smelter at Harjavalta, south-west Finland, has emitted considerable amounts of NH(3) into the atmosphere. The effects of NH(3) emissions on nitrogen and sulphur deposition in throughfall and the foliar nutrient status were investigated in a Scots pine stand at 0.5 km distance. Bulk deposition, stand throughfall and percolation water (20 cm depth) samples were collected at 4-week intervals during 1992-1998. pH and the Ca, Mg, K, NH(4) and SO(4) concentrations were determined on the samples. NH(3) emissions have strongly increased the scavengin

Ecological restoration in arid and semi-arid regions plays a vital role in maintaining regional carbon balance under global change. Although water management and vegetation composition regulate soil carbon cycling, their combined effects on greenhouse gas source/sink dynamics in sandy ecosystems and the underlying microbial mechanisms remain unclear. This study examined sand dunes (Sd) and 35-year-old typical afforestation types including Caragana microphylla Lam. (Cm), Populus simonii Carr. (Ps), Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica Litv. (Pm), and mixed forests of Ps + Pm and Pm + Cm in the Horqi

Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) (PBSA) degradation and its plastisphere microbiome in cropland soils have been studied; however, such knowledge is limited in the case of forest ecosystems. In this context, we investigated: i) the impact of forest types (conifer and broadleaved forests) on the plastisphere microbiome and its community assembly, ii) their link to PBSA degradation, and iii) the identities of potential microbial keystone taxa. We determined that forest type significantly affected microbial richness (F = 5.26-9.88, P = 0.034 to 0.006) and fungal community composition (R2 = 0.38

To study the impact of air pollution on the growth and elemental composition of conifers, 5 sample plots were established at different distances and directions from the Estonian Power Plant (Northeast Estonia) in 1999-2000. The selected stands were 75-80(85)-yr-old parts (0.05 ha) of (Oxalis)-Myrtillus site type forest of 0.7-0.8 density. The soils of all sample plots were Gleyic Podzols (Lkg) on sands. The several times higher Ca concentration in the humus horizon of the sample plot NE from the Estonian PP is caused by the prevailing westerly and southerly winds which carry more pollutants NE

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro activity of the essential oil of Pinus nigra subsp. pallasiana against protoscoleces of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. In traditional Turkish folk medicine, the essential oils and resin of P. nigra and P. sylvestris are used externally for wound healing. They are also used in cattle for treating worms and as boiling essence against cold and stomachache. Protoscoleces were aseptically aspirated from sheep livers having hydatid cysts.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three concentrations (10, 30, and 50 mg/mL) of the essential
