Betel is a compound of natural substances chewed for its psychostimulating effects. Betel is composed of the nut of the areca palm (Areca catechu), the leaf of the betel pepper (Piper betle), and lime (calcium hydroxide). Approximately 200 million persons chew betel regularly throughout the western Pacific basin and south Asia. Only three drugs (nicotine, ethanol, and caffeine) are consumed more widely than betel. When betel is chewed, it produces mild psychoactive and cholinergic effects. There is copious production of a blood-red saliva that can stain oral structures. After years of chewing,

Piper betle leaves are widely cultivated in Malaysia, India, Indonesia and Thailand. They have been used as a traditional medicine for centuries due to their medicinal properties, including antioxidant, antiproliferative, antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties, which are attributable to their high phenolic contents. Hydroxychavicol (HC), a primary constituent of P. betle leaves, is known to possess antiproliferative activity at micromolar doses on various cancer cell lines of different origins while leaving normal cells unharmed. The present review summarises the mechanisms

Betel quid (BQ) chewing shows a strong correlation to the incidence of oral submucous fibrosis (OSF), leukoplakia and oral cancer. BQ contains mainly areca nut, lime, Piper betle leaf (PBL) and the inflorescence of P. betle (IPB). Hydroxychavicol (4-allyl-catechol, HC), as a major phenolic compound in PBL and IPB, is shown to induce oxidative stress, glutathione (GSH) depletion and cell cycle deregulation. Using bivariate BrdU/PI flow cytometry, KB cells in DNA synthesis (S phase) are shown to be sensitive to the toxic effect of HC and show cell cycle arrest and apoptosis following exposure to

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Sarawak is located in one of the world's most biodiverse regions and is home to more than 40 sub-ethnic groups that each have their own distinct culture, language and lifestyle. This has given rise to numerous, unique ethnobotanical systems. However, due to rapid urbanization, this traditional knowledge is at a risk of extinction. Yet, ethnobotanical studies in Sarawak are almost non-existent, especially among Orang Ulu communities like the Kenyah.
AIM OF STUDY: Therefore, this study was conducted to document the ethnomedicinal knowledge of the Kenyah community

The effects of dietary supplementation with phytogenic blend (PB) of Aerva lanata, Piper betle, Cynodon dactylon, and Piper nigrum on growth performance, ileal nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology, and cecal microflora were determined in a 42-day broiler feeding trial. A total of 192 broilers were assigned to 4 dietary treatments (6 replicates and 8 birds/replicate): basal diet, basal diet supplemented with antibiotic (chlortetracycline), 1% and 2% PB, respectively. The body weight gain (BWG) of starter chicks increased linearly (P = 0.023) as dietary supplementation levels of PB incr

Numerous environmental factors such as diet, alcohol use, stress, and environmental chemicals are known to elicit epigenetic changes, leading to increased rates of cancers and other diseases. The incidence of head and neck cancer, one of the most common cancers in Taiwanese males, is increasing: oral cancer and nasopharyngeal carcinoma are ranked fourth and tenth respectively, among the top ten cancers in this group, and a major cause of cancer-related deaths in Taiwanese males. Previous studies have identified smoking, alcohol use, and betel quid chewing as the three major causes of head and

Vibrio cholerae is the causal organism of the cholera epidemic, which is mostly prevalent in developing and underdeveloped countries. However, incidences of cholera in developed countries are also alarming. Because of the emergence of new drug-resistant strains, even though several generic drugs and vaccines have been developed over time, Vibrio infections remain a global health problem that appeals for the development of novel drugs and vaccines against the pathogen. Here, applying comparative proteomic and reverse vaccinology approaches to the exoproteome and secretome of the pathogen, we ha

Neurodegenerative disorders represent a significant health challenge for the population, with their mechanisms of action being poorly understood. The development of inhibitory pharmaceuticals has encountered several obstacles, resulting in therapies that lacks the necessary efficacy. Neurodegenerative disorders are marked by a gradual deterioration of neurons, leading to a decline in various functions directed by central nervous system (CNS) including motor and non-motor symptoms. Recent focus has turned towards targeting Sema4D as a potential target for mitigating neuroinflammation and inhibi

Areca nut and slaked lime, with or without tobacco wrapped in Piper betle leaf, prepared as betel quid, is extensively consumed as a masticatory product in many countries across the world. Betel Quid can promote the malignant transformation of oral lesions as well as trigger benign cellular and molecular changes. In the oral cavity, it causes changes at the compositional level in oral microbiota called dysbiosis. This dysbiosis may play an important role in Oral Cancer in betel quid chewers. The abnormal presence and increase of bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum, Capnocytophaga gingivalis, Prev

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second common cause of cancer death in the world and its development can be regulated by herbal compounds. Unfortunately, little information is known about the signal pathways of Piper betle isoeugenol in CRC cells (CRCCs). Using three CRC cell lines (SW480, SW620, and HCT116) that represent different molecular characteristics and serve as in vitro models of CRC progression, we found that isoeugenol inhibited cell growth. Wound healing and Boyden chamber assays indicated that isoeugenol inhibited the migration and invasion in CRCCs. Mechanistically, isoeugenol su

Fresh betel leaves (Piper betle L.), imported into the UK are a traditional ready-to-eat food consumed by Asian populations. We report here the consolidation of routinely collected data to model the public health risks from consumption of this food. Amongst 2110 samples collected at Border Inspection, wholesale, catering or retail, Salmonella was detected in 488 (23%) of samples tested between 2011 and 2017 and was the most commonly Salmonella-contaminated ready-to-eat food examined by Public Health England during this period. Using data from multiple samples (usually 5) tested per consignment

Multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, a Gram-positive bacterium that causes several difficult-to-treat human infections, is a considerable threat to global healthcare. We hypothesize that there exist inner responsive molecules (IRMs) which can function synergistically with antibiotics to restore the sensitivity of resistant bacteria to existing antibiotics without inducing new antibiotic resistance. An investigation of the extracts of the Chinese medicinal herb Piper betle L. led to the isolation of six benzoate esters, BO-1-BO-6. Among these, BO-1 as a distinct IRM displayed considerable

The role of the ariginine-metabolism in the healing action of the Piper betle phenol, allylpyrocatechol (APC) and omeprazole against indomethacin-induced stomach ulceration in mouse was investigated. Indomethacin (18 mg/kg) was found to induce maximum stomach ulceration in Swiss albino mice on the 3rd day of its administration, which was associated with reduced arginase activity (21.6%, P<0.05), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression (72%, P<0.001), and IL-4 and TGF-beta levels, along with increased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) (9.3 folds, P<0.001) expression, nitrite (2

The present study aims to investigate the anti-inflammatory potential of the leaf hydroalcoholic extract of Piper betleoides C. DC., also known as "Jangli Paan" in Northeast India, using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated both cell culture (RAW264.7, macrophage cells) and animal (albino rat) model of inflammation. Treatment with leaf hydroalcoholic extract of Piper betleoides (PBtE) dose-dependently (5, 10, and 20 µg/mL) decreased the secretion of pro-inflammatory (TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1) and increased anti-inflammatory (IL-4 and IL-10) cytokines in LPS-treated macrophages. Similarly, treatment

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Thai plant extracts (PEs) and essential oils (EOs) against reference and clinical isolate strains of Candida albicans, focusing on their ability to inhibit biofilm formation, cell adhesion to denture acrylic, and germ tube formation. The minimum biofilm inhibition concentration (MBIC) and the minimum biofilm eradication concentration (MBEC) were determined. The impact on adhesion to denture acrylic was determined by XTT assay, and germ tube inhibition was evaluated using the counting chamber. The results revealed that cinnamon bark oil exhibited the

BACKGROUND: Oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) is a chronic disease characterized by subepithelial collagen deposition with formation of bands involving the oral cavity and adjacent structures. Oral submucous fibrosis is a precancerous condition. It is caused by chewing of betel quid (Areca catechu L., Piper betle, lime and tobacco) and ready-made products like pan masala and gutka which also contain areca nut. These products are available all over South Asia. The hallmark of OSF is extremely restricted mouth opening.
