From amusic to musical?--Improving pitch memory in congenital amusia with transcranial alternating current stimulation.

Brain imaging studies highlighted structural differences in congenital amusia, a life-long perceptual disorder that is associated with pitch perception and pitch memory deficits. A functional anomaly characterized by decreased low gamma oscillations (30-40 Hz range) in the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) during pitch memory has been revealed recently. Thus, the present study investigates whether applying transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at 35 Hz to the right DLPFC would improve pitch memory. Nine amusics took part in two tACS sessions (either 35 Hz or 90 Hz) and

How Switching Musical Instruments Affects Pitch Discrimination for Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) users struggle with music perception. Generally, they have poorer pitch discrimination and timbre identification than peers with normal hearing, which reduces their overall music appreciation and quality of life. This study's primary aim was to characterize how the increased difficulty of comparing pitch changes across musical instruments affects CI users and their peers with no known hearing loss. The motivation is to better understand the challenges that CI users face with polyphonic music listening. The primary hypothesis was that CI users would be more aff

Implicit learning of artificial grammatical structures after inferior frontal cortex lesions.

OBJECTIVE: Previous research associated the left inferior frontal cortex with implicit structure learning. The present study tested patients with lesions encompassing the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG; including Brodmann areas 44 and 45) to further investigate this cognitive function, notably by using non-verbal material, implicit investigation methods, and by enhancing potential remaining function via dynamic attending. Patients and healthy matched controls were exposed to an artificial pitch grammar in an implicit learning paradigm to circumvent the potential influence of impaired langua

Evaluation of iPod-Based Automated Tinnitus Pitch Matching.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the perception of sound unrelated to any external source. Diagnostic approaches to assess tinnitus characteristics such as tinnitus pitch are crucial for new attempts of tinnitus therapy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate reliable tinnitus pitch-matching procedures. Existing procedures usually require audiometric equipment and are time consuming. However, some patients with tinnitus find it hard to match their tinnitus in one single session. Therefore, we developed an iPod-based application for self-administered tinnitus pitch matching and

Subjective body vertical: a promising diagnostic tool in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus?

Postural instability is a frequent symptom of patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), and might be due to the misperception of body verticality. The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of the subjective body vertical (SBV) as a potential tool for diagnosing iNPH. Twenty patients with iNPH underwent tests of SBV in the pitch and roll planes before and after cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage. Ten patients with other central gait disorders served as controls and also underwent tests for SBV. Before CSF drainage, patients with iNPH showed an impaired vertic

Long-term measurement of binaural intensity matches and pitch matches. I. Normal hearing.

Changes in pitch perception and hearing thresholds over time have been observed in subjects with monaural fluctuating low-frequency hearing loss and Ménière's disease. Long-term suprathreshold audiometry and binaural pitch matches could provide information of these changes. Ten normal subjects were tested for stability of binaural intensity and pitch matches during 9-22 days in their homes with newly developed portable test equipment. Binaural pitch matches were measured using a 0.25- or 1-kHz reference tone presented at 60 dB SPL to one ear, and a loudness-matched test tone of adjustable freq

Structural connectivity predicts sequential processing differences in music perception ability.

To relate individual differences in music perception ability with whole brain white matter connectivity, we scanned a group of 27 individuals with varying degrees of musical training and assessed musical ability in sensory and sequential music perception domains using the Profile of Music Perception Skills-Short version (PROMS-S). Sequential processing ability was estimated by combining performance on tasks for Melody, Standard Rhythm, Embedded Rhythm, and Accent subscores while sensory processing ability was ascertained via tasks of Tempo, Pitch, Timbre, and Tuning. Controlling for musical tr

Detection and identification of monaural and binaural pitch contours in dyslexic listeners.

The use of binaural pitch stimuli to test for the presence of binaural auditory impairment in reading-disabled subjects has so far led to contradictory outcomes. While some studies found that a majority of dyslexic subjects was unable to perceive binaural pitch, others obtained a clear response of dyslexic listeners to Huggins' pitch (HP). The present study clarified whether impaired binaural pitch perception is found in dyslexia. Results from a pitch contour identification test, performed in 31 dyslexic listeners and 31 matched controls, clearly showed that dyslexics perceived HP as well as t

[I can hear you, but I don't understand you. Why is it so important to perceive high frequencies?].

The word personality is derived from the Latin word "persona" (mask, person); "per sona" means "by the sound or through the sound". In order to look through speech, to hear "behind the mask of a person", we have to be able to hear properly. Especially the frequencies between 2 kHz and 5 kHz and the overtones (the higher we can perceive them, the better) play a central role for decoding vowels, consonants and effects of emotions in voice and speech; beyond that they provide the perfect enjoyment of music and sound. Obviously they are also a vital physical necessity. High frequencies stimulate,

Application of Pitch-Based Measures for Aperiodic Pediatric Dysphonic Voices.

OBJECTIVE: The role of pitch perception in the assessment of pediatric dysphonia remains underexplored. Aperiodicity associated with severe dysphonia poses a vexing problem for conventional measurement methods that rely on signal periodicity, rendering them unreliable for most dysphonic voices. We tested the hypotheses that pitch height and pitch strength systematically vary with type 1, 2, and 3 signals (varying in periodicity) associated with glottal and supraglottal vibratory sources and may be used to augment signal typing classification. METHODS: Ten naive listeners judged pitch height t

Impact of sickness induced by centrifugation on tilt perception.

INTRODUCTION: Sickness induced by centrifugation (SIC) is an analog for sensorimotor impairment and motion sickness associated with gravity transitions experienced by astronauts. The paradigm involves sustained centrifugation to create a static Gx (into the eyes) hypergravity exposure, following which vestibular-mediated functions, such as balance and eye movements, have been found to be degraded or altered. Furthermore, astronauts who were more prone to space motion sickness were also more susceptible to motion sickness following SIC. However, the vestibular and perceptual processing alterati

Clinically Paired Electrodes Are Often Not Perceived as Pitch Matched.

For bilateral cochlear implant (CI) patients, electrodes that receive the same frequency allocation often stimulate locations in the left and right ear that do not yield the same perceived pitch, resulting in a pitch mismatch. This pitch mismatch may be related to degraded binaural abilities. Pitch mismatches have been found for some bilateral CI users and the goal of this study was to determine whether pitch mismatches are prevalent in bilateral CI patients, including those with extensive experience with bilateral CIs. To investigate this possibility, pitch matching was conducted with 16 bila

Octave equivalence and the incidental learning of absolute pitch.

Absolute pitch is the ability to label the pitch chroma of isolated tones. Recent work has demonstrated rapid improvements in pitch identification using an incidental contingency learning task. In the present work, we used a similar approach to assess whether knowledge about the pitch chroma (rather than pitch heights) of tones is possible in our task. In Experiment 1 with nonmusicians, seven notes in two octaves were played most often with their corresponding written note names and less often with the others. Tones from a third octave were played equally often with all note names (i.e., no co

Pulse-rate discrimination deficit in cochlear implant users: is the upper limit of pitch peripheral or central?

Cochlear implant (CI) users do not reliably associate an increase in pulse rate above 300 pulses per second (pps) with an increase in pitch. The locus of this upper limit of pitch remains unknown. The present study tested the hypothesis that this deficit resides at least initially at the auditory nerve. The hypothesis was tested by comparing pulse rate discrimination in different neural excitation patterns, in which a large versus small population of auditory nerve fibers was activated. If poorer pulse rate discrimination was found under conditions where narrower spread of neural excitation (S

Case reopened: A temporal basis for harmonic pitch templates in the early auditory system?a).

A fundamental assumption of rate-place models of pitch is the existence of harmonic templates in the central nervous system (CNS). Shamma and Klein [(2000). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 2631-2644] hypothesized that these templates have a temporal basis. Coincidences in the temporal fine-structure of neural spike trains, even in response to nonharmonic, stochastic stimuli, would be sufficient for the development of harmonic templates. The physiological plausibility of this hypothesis is tested. Responses to pure tones, low-pass noise, and broadband noise from auditory nerve fibers and brainstem "hi

Binaural Fusion Sharpens on a Scale of Octaves During Pre-adolescence in Children with Normal Hearing, Hearing Aids, and Bimodal Cochlear Implants, but not Bilateral Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: The breadth of binaural pitch fusion, the integration of sounds differing in frequency across the two ears, can limit the ability to segregate and understand speech in background noise. Binaural pitch fusion is one type of central auditory processing that may still be developing in the pre-adolescent age range. In addition, children with hearing loss potentially have different trajectories of development of central auditory processing compared to their normal-hearing (NH) peers, due to disruption of auditory input and/or abnormal stimulation from hearing devices. The goal of this stud

Auditory cortex and beyond: Deficits in congenital amusia.

Congenital amusia is a neuro-developmental disorder of music perception and production, with the observed deficits contrasting with the sophisticated music processing reported for the general population. Musical deficits within amusia have been hypothesized to arise from altered pitch processing, with impairments in pitch discrimination and, notably, short-term memory. We here review research investigating its behavioral and neural correlates, in particular the impairments at encoding, retention, and recollection of pitch information, as well as how these impairments extend to the processing o
