OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to statistically evaluate the independent and interacting effects of biological and environmental risk factors that influence lateralization of deformational plagiocephaly (DP) in an attempt to provide future guidance for clinical treatment.
METHODS: A database of >20000 children treated for DP was examined by using 2- and 3-way factor analyses for categorical frequency data, representing the largest statistical analysis of DP to date. Data on parity, zygosity, intrauterine presentation, birth number and weight, sleep position, lateralization, and sex were c

SUBJECT: The number of plagiocephalies without synostosis (PWS) strongly increased in the last decade. Its impact on the mandible remains badly understood, the more so as there are various forms of PSS. The purpose of this study was to analyze mandible deformation according to the deformation of PWS.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was carried out retrospectively starting from three-dimensional scans of children presenting with a PWS. They were classified in 2 groups according to the deformation of the cranium. There were 51 frontal plagiocephalies (PF) and 19 occipital plagiocephalies (PO) f

Positional plagiocephaly is a deformation resulting from intrauterine constraint or postnatal positioning leading to asymmetrical cranial growth. There has been a steady increase in referrals for positional plagiocephaly following the release of the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation of supine infant sleeping position to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in 1992, largely because of poor parent education on the risks of prolonged occipital pressures. While this deformity is fairly easy to manage when diagnosed early, treatment can become more difficult and complicated with

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of helmet therapy (DOC band) in the correction of patients with moderate to severe posterior deformational plagiocephaly.
DESIGN: In this prospective study, the infants were evaluated using 18 anthropometric measurements.
PATIENTS: The charts of 248 patients seen between August 1, 1995, and July 31, 1999, were reviewed, and 125 met the criteria for inclusion in the study. All the patients had posterior deformational plagiocephaly with no other craniofacial deformities or medical conditions. Treatment was instituted prior to 1 y

Frontal plagiocephaly can be caused by two mechanisms: craniosynostosis and external deformational pressure. Synostotic plagiocephaly is known to be associated with vertical strabismus and contralateral head tilt. Thirteen patients with deformational frontal plagiocephaly were examined to evaluate head position, ocular motility, and alignment. Nine of the patients (70%) were found to have ipsilateral torticollis, but only one patient had strabismus and this was a horizontal deviation not obviously associated with head position. The clinical features of synostotic and deformational plagiocephal

Fifteen of 155 patients with hemifacial microsomia were noted to have frontal plagiocephaly. These patients were examined to determine whether the frontal flattening was either secondary to deformation, the result of unilateral coronal synostosis, or part of the spectrum of hemifacial microsomia. The patients were categorized as having deformational versus synostotic frontal plagiocephaly by documenting position of the supraorbital rims, nasal root, ears, malar eminences, chin point, and the palpebral fissure height. Other extracraniofacial anomalies were also noted. Fourteen of 15 (93%) patie

INTRODUCTION: A stratification system is useful in deformational plagiocephaly (DP) to help categorize patients and reproduce a consistent treatment strategy. The Argenta classification is a clinical 5-point scale for unilateral DP and 3-point scale for central DP (CDP).
METHODS: A retrospective review was completed for patients with DP and classified using the Argenta clinical classification by plastic surgeons at a tertiary medical center over a 12-year period.
RESULTS: In the 4483 patients, type III was the most prevalent DP type (42%) followed by II, IV, I, and V. Within CDP, VIB was the

INTRODUCTION: Nonsynostotic posterior plagiocephaly has become the most common skull deformation since pediatricians have suggested the supine position for the newborns to reduce the risk of sudden death. Prevention of such a "positional" deformation or its management once it has occurred is mainly based on physical maneuvers such as physiotherapy and active positional corrective measures.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Surgical correction, however, may be suggested in rare cases where deformation of the skull is so severe or the referral of the child is so late that physical corrective treatment cannot

The "Back to Sleep" campaign has dramatically decreased the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome; however, its sequelae of deformational plagiocephaly have today reached epidemic proportions. In the last decade, we have learned to distinguish deformational plagiocephaly clinically from craniosynostosis, thereby preventing its unnecessary surgical correction. Primary care providers must increasingly be aware of this condition and, in turn, educate new parents about its prevention. Should preventative measures fail and infants develop persistent sleep patterns that result in craniofacial de

The aim of this study was to perform a morphometric analysis of the skull base to understand the mechanism of asymmetry between malformational and deformational plagiocephaly. Since 1988, we have carried out 102 CT scans with three-dimensional reconstruction of the endocranial side of the skull base. There were 20 cases of malformational plagiocephaly, consisting of 18 unicoronal synostoses (UCS) and two unilambdoid synostoses (ULS), and 82 cases of plagiocephaly without synostosis, made up of 60 cases of frontal plagiocephaly (FP) and 22 of occipital plagiocephaly (OP). The skull base asymmet

Plagiocephaly is a common asymmetry of the skull giving the impression that the subject, usually a neonate, has suffered a compressive force acting unilaterally. Normally innocuous, it is a postural deformity that can be suggestive of other significant abnormalities, e.g. joint dysplasia. Although intuitive measurements of plagiocephaly appear in the literature there is little evidence of analytical evaluation. This paper describes a measurement methodology based on black and white photography. A flat-bed scanner and a personal computer facilitated the transformation of the prepared photograph

Plagiocephaly is a term commonly used to describe congenital forehead asymmetry. Sixty patients with frontal plagiocephaly were evaluated retrospectively and separated into three types: synostotic (N = 24), compensational (N = 3), and deformational (N = 33). Categorization of frontal plagiocephaly as synostotic or deformational was reliably made by physical examination, focusing on the supraorbital rims, nasal root, ears, and malar eminences. Other anatomic parameters useful in the differential diagnosis included chin point, palpebral fissures, and facial height. This study documented that bir

UNLABELLED: Positional plagiocephaly is a common pediatric pathology that has been considered as a cosmetic condition, but recently its association with neurodevelopmental delay has been explored.
OBJECTIVE: To perform a narrative review updating the findings of a 2017 systematic review on plagiocephaly and neurodevelopment.
METHODOLOGY: Articles in the MEDLINE, PubMed, Google Scholar, and DeepDyve databases were reviewed, data were extracted from the most relevant studies evaluating their methodological quality. The search terms used were: "plagiocephaly", "positional plagiocephaly", "brach

Since the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended the supine sleeping position for infants to prevent SIDS, positional plagiocephaly (PP) prevalence has increased. There are great controversies regarding the possible consequences of PP and the degree of severity required for them to manifest. There is no consensus on the efficacy of PP therapies, such as positioning, kinesiology, and cranial orthoses. This review aims to analyze the existing literature to update the causes, main characteristics, and evidence on the treatment of PP. Intervention from the newborn period is important, encompas

BACKGROUND: Deformational plagiocephaly is usually managed conservatively, as it tends to improve over time and with the use of conservative measures. However, before the year 2017 we operated on patients with severe plagiocephaly and neurological symptoms at the Helsinki Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Center.
METHODS: Of the 20 infants with severe deformational plagiocephaly and neurological symptoms referred to us between 2014 and 2016, 10 underwent cranioplasty open reshaping of the posterior cranial vault. The parents of the last 10 patients were given information on the natural history of
