Solidarity With Planet Earth: Predictors of Pro-Environmental Behavior Among Adolescents and Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Conceptualizing pro-environmental behavior (PEB) as solidarity with planet Earth and as a socio-ecological dilemma, it is argued that PEB results when humans prioritize positive long-term consequences for the entire planet over positive short-term individual gains. Therefore, it was tested whether four socio-cognitive competencies taken from the model of helping behavior predict PEB and whether these associations differ between adolescents and young adults. METHODS: In total, 164 adolescents (M = 16.14, SD = 0.98) and 156 young adults (M = 21.89, SD = 2.13) participated. PEB was

Clean Joints, Clean Planet: A Review of Literature on Sustainable Practices in Orthopaedic Joint Replacements.

The healthcare sector generates significant global greenhouse gas emissions, and the orthopaedic operating theatre is among the most resource-intensive environments within any hospital. Hip and knee arthroplasty produce considerable waste and carbon emissions with each procedure. This review evaluates global sustainable practices adopted for hip and knee joint replacement surgeries and identifies practical opportunities to reduce environmental impact while preserving patient safety and quality of care. A narrative review rather than a systematic review of literature of major databases was perf

PlaNet-S: an Automatic Semantic Segmentation Model for Placenta Using U-Net and SegNeXt.

This study aimed to develop a fully automated semantic placenta segmentation model that integrates the U-Net and SegNeXt architectures through ensemble learning. A total of 218 pregnant women with suspected placental abnormalities who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled, yielding 1090 annotated images for developing a deep learning model for placental segmentation. The images were standardized and divided into training and test sets. The performance of Placental Segmentation Network (PlaNet-S), which integrates U-Net and SegNeXt within an ensemble framework, was assessed u

Evaluation and Treatment in Urology for Nocturia Caused by Nonurological Mechanisms: Guidance from the PLANET Study.

Patients with nocturia are commonly referred to urology clinics, including many for whom a nonurological medical condition is responsible for their symptoms. The PLanning Appropriate Nocturia Evaluation and Treatment (PLANET) study was established to develop practical approaches to equip healthcare practitioners to deal with the diverse causes of nocturia, based on systematic reviews and expert consensus. Initial assessment and therapy need to consider the possibility of one or more medical conditions falling into the "SCREeN" areas of Sleep medicine (insomnia, periodic limb movements of sleep

One Health - One Planet - One Mind: integrating eco-anxiety into the One Health paradigm.

Climate change and environmental degradation affect not only ecosystems and physical health but also psychological well-being. Eco-anxiety-defined as chronic or anticipatory distress related to perceived environmental decline-has emerged as a growing public mental health concern. Although One Health frameworks recognise the interdependence of human, animal, and environmental health, psychosocial processes shaping behavioural responses to environmental change remain underdeveloped within One Health discourse. This conceptual review positions eco-anxiety as a psychosocial determinant operating w

Self-Assembly of Peapod-like Micrometer Tubes from a Planet-Satellite-type Supramolecular Megamer.

This study presents interesting self-assembly of peapod-like micrometer tubes from a planet-satellite-type supramolecular megamer, which was constructed through the specific host-guest molecular recognition between azobenzene (AZO)-functionalized hyperbranched poly(ethyl-3-oxetanemethanol)-star-poly(ethylene oxide) (HSP-AZO) and β-cyclodextrin(CD)-based hydrophilic hyperbranched polyglycerol (CD-g-HPG). A peapod-like structure with micrometer-sized tube as the pod and vesicles encapsulated inside as the peas was formed through sequential vesicle entosis, linear association, and fusion processe

Replication of individual differences in the Pirates and Planets conditioned punishment task, but no correspondence to behavior in a non-clinical sample.

Individuals differ in their responses to negative consequences. While some adjust quickly to avoid punishment, others persist in maladaptive behaviors despite adverse outcomes. Such differences in punishment sensitivity have been implicated in psychological disorders, including substance use, obsessive-compulsive, and mood disorders. The Pirates and Planets task (Jean-Richard-dit-Bressel et al., 2023) identified three punishment sensitivity profiles differing in punishment contingency awareness and responsiveness. However, the task's external validity and clinical relevance remain unclear. Her

Electride Formation of HCP-Iron at High Pressure: Unraveling the Origin of the Superionic State of Iron-Rich Compounds in Rocky Planets.

Electride possesses electrons localized at interstitial sites without attracting nuclei. It brings outstanding material properties not only originating from its own loosely bounded characteristics but also serving as a quasiatom, which even chemically interacts with other elemental ions. In elemental metals, electride transitions have been reported in alkali metals where valence electrons can easily gain enough kinetic energy to escape nuclei. However, there are few studies on transition metals. Especially iron, the key element of human technology and geophysics, has not been studied in respec

The effect of a strong stellar flare on the atmospheric chemistry of an earth-like planet orbiting an M dwarf.

Main sequence M stars pose an interesting problem for astrobiology: their abundance in our galaxy makes them likely targets in the hunt for habitable planets, but their strong chromospheric activity produces high-energy radiation and charged particles that may be detrimental to life. We studied the impact of the 1985 April 12 flare from the M dwarf AD Leonis (AD Leo), simulating the effects from both UV radiation and protons on the atmospheric chemistry of a hypothetical, Earth-like planet located within its habitable zone. Based on observations of solar proton events and the Neupert effect, w

Spaceship Earth Revisited: The Co-Benefits of Overcoming Biological Extinction of Experience at the Level of Person, Place and Planet.

Extensive research underscores that we interpret the world through metaphors; moreover, common metaphors are a useful means to enhance the pursuit of personal and collective goals. In the context of planetary health-defined as the interdependent vitality of all natural and anthropogenic ecosystems (social, political and otherwise)-one enduring metaphor can be found in the concept of "Spaceship Earth". Although not without criticism, the term "Spaceship Earth" has been useful to highlight both resource limitations and the beauty and fragility of delicate ecosystems that sustain life. Rene Dubos

Hemolytic pattern of erythrocytes in the newborn measured by the coil planet centrifuge system and its relationship to neonatal jaundice.

Dynamic osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in cord blood and its changes during the neonatal period were studied by means of a coil planet centrifuge system. The starting-point for hemolysis in the newborn become similar to that of adult blood after approximately a week, while the shift of the end-point to the adult range required one month or more. The percentage of fragile cord blood cells with a hemolysis starting-point above 110 m osmol and the maximum bilirubin level during neonatal period were examined. A high percentage of fragile cells was associated with high bilirubin levels, and when

From patient to planet: integrating climate impact into a hospital medicine initiative reducing blood urea nitrogen testing.

BACKGROUND: Pursuing climate-conscious care has become a key focus of quality improvement (QI) efforts. Hospitals across Alberta, Canada, implemented a multicomponent intervention to reduce unnecessary blood urea nitrogen (BUN) testing. This study evaluated the broader environmental impact of the intervention across multiple hospital medicine settings. METHODS: Using a pre-post study design, monthly BUN test counts were compared before and after implementing the initiative across six hospital medicine wards to calculate percentage reductions. A secondary analysis assessed the initiative's env

Caring for patients, caring for the planet: extreme hypofractionated curative radiotherapy in the Green Era A Pilot study within the MUSA framework.

AIMS: Concern about rising greenhouse gas levels is increasing, and the healthcare sector represents a substantial contributor to global carbon footprints. As a result, the development of more sustainable oncology practices has become an urgent call to action. Since more than half of cancer patients receive radiation therapy (RT), understanding its potential environmental impact is essential. The aim of the present study is to estimate the carbon footprint produced by RT in the context of prostate cancer comparing moderate and extreme hypofractionated treatments. METHODS: Activity data for 10

Response of atmospheric biomarkers to NO(x)-induced photochemistry generated by stellar cosmic rays for earth-like planets in the habitable zone of M dwarf stars.

Understanding whether M dwarf stars may host habitable planets with Earth-like atmospheres and biospheres is a major goal in exoplanet research. If such planets exist, the question remains as to whether they could be identified via spectral signatures of biomarkers. Such planets may be exposed to extreme intensities of cosmic rays that could perturb their atmospheric photochemistry. Here, we consider stellar activity of M dwarfs ranging from quiet up to strong flaring conditions and investigate one particular effect upon biomarkers, namely, the ability of secondary electrons caused by stellar

Prescribing for the patient and the planet: a pragmatic feasibility study of a behaviour change intervention to reduce liquid amoxicillin prescribing in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Oral liquid medicines can be clinically appropriate but may be used when solid oral formulations are feasible, with implications for medicine costs and environmental sustainability. We evaluated the feasibility of GPILL, a theory-informed intervention using prescribing feedback, social norms and information on formulation-associated carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions to support reduced liquid amoxicillin prescribing in primary care. METHODS: The intervention was called 'GPILL' which stands for a 'Green Prescribing Intervention to Lower Liquids' and was adapted from an exis

My COVID 'planetary health' epiphany: restoration of our planet requires an Indigenous lens in health professions education and healthcare.

INTRODUCTION: In their 2024 editorial, Yassaie and Garman called on health professionals to be planetary health leaders. Responding to their call for articles, this submission reflects my COVID-19 'planetary health' epiphany during the Australian lockdowns while curating sustainable healthcare and climate change education submissions. COLLECTIVE COVID-19 LEARNINGS: As a global collective, we could have learnt much from the pandemic. Despite our broken relationship with Nature, during lockdown, most of us spent considerable time in Nature. This should have heightened our awareness of our interd
