Jasmonic acid (JA), one of the most pivotal plant hormones, has emerged as a central focus in plant biology research due to its extensive and diverse biological functions. This review synthesizes the significant advancements made over the past decade in understanding JA's role in regulating plant development and mediating responses to environmental stresses, areas that lacked systematic review in previous years. We provide a concise overview of JA's biosynthetic and signal transduction pathways, with particular emphasis on the key regulatory complex comprising CORONATINE INSENSITIVE 1 (COI1),

Carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) availability must be continuously integrated to sustain plant growth and development, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying this integration have long remained elusive. In this review, we highlight emerging evidence that C and N signaling converge on a regulatory network involving SnRK1, NLP7, TOR, and potentially nitric oxide. The clearest conceptual advance is the demonstration that SnRK1 directly phosphorylates the nitrate sensor and transcriptional regulator NLP7, providing an integration node through which energy limitation and C deficiency can suppress the p

The free radical nitric oxide (NO) is an important redox-related signaling molecule modulating wide range of biological processes in all living plants. The transfer of NO bioactivity could be executed chiefly through a prototypic, redox-based post-translational modification, S-nitrosylation that covalently adds NO moiety to a reactive cysteine thiol of a target protein to form an S-nitrosothiol. Protein S-nitrosylation is recently emerged as an evolutionarily conserved and important mechanism regulating multiple aspects of plant growth and development. Here, we review the recent progress of S-

Light-emitting plants (LEPs) represent a promising technology for harnessing nature's processes for sustainable illumination. However, ensuring the long-term stability and efficiency of the emission without compromising plant health is critical. To address these issues, the experiment explored the creation of a chemiluminescent reaction using ethyl vanillin, a food flavoring compound, as an alternative to commercial chemiluminescent products, which are carcinogenic. Divanillyl oxalate (DVO) was used as a precursor in the chemiluminescence system, combined with an organic solvent, NaOH, H2O2, a

Legumes establish symbiosis with rhizobia, forming nitrogen-fixing nodules. The central role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) in nodule biology has been clearly established. Recently, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other reactive sulfur species (RSS) have emerged as novel signaling molecules in animals and plants. A major mechanism by which ROS, RNS, and RSS fulfil their signaling role is the post-translational modification of proteins. To identify possible functions of H2S in nodule development and senescence, we used the tag-switch method to quantify changes i

Since its discovery in 1937 in the West Nile district of Uganda, West Nile virus (WNV) has been one of the leading causes of mosquito-transmitted infectious diseases (Smithburn, Burke, Am J Trop Med 20:22, 1940). Subsequently, it spread to Europe, Asia, Australia, and finally North America in 1999 (Sejvar, Ochsner 5(3):6-10, 2003). Worldwide outbreaks have continued to increase since the 1990s (Chancey et al, Biomed Res Int 2015:376230, 2015). According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 51,000 cases of WNV infection and nearly 2400 cases of WNV-related death were repo

Radioactivity released from disasters like Chernobyl and Fukushima is a global hazard and a threat to exposed biota. To minimize the deleterious effects of stressors organisms adopt various strategies. Plants, for example, may delay germination or stay dormant during stressful periods. However, an intense stress may halt germination or heavily affect various developmental stages and select for life history changes. Here, we test for the consequence of exposure to ionizing radiation on plant development. We conducted a common garden experiment in an uncontaminated greenhouse using 660 seeds ori

Nowadays, Cannabis sativa L. is primarily valued for the cannabinoids produced and accumulated in its glandular trichomes. Consequently, it is of special relevance to address studies related to the biochemical, molecular, and morphological panorama of trichomes. This review highlights some of the most recent publications on the morphological, phenological, biochemical and molecular characterization of trichomes and mechanisms underlying their development. Particular emphasis is placed on the transcription factors related to trichome cell identity, drawing on studies conducted in model organism

Plants live in a physical world governed by a multitude of mechanical processes which vary over time. The unique features of plant cells, which are turgor-inflated objects surrounded by the cell wall, present an intricate perception and response system for mechanical forces. A powerful tool to investigate how plants adapt and react to these cues is Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), which can provide information about surface morphology as well as mechanical properties. In the context of cell wall biomechanics, there remains some controversy on appropriate AFM measurement practices and suitable us

Rabies is a prevalent health problem in developing countries. Although vaccines and immunoglobulin treatments are available, their cost and multiple-dose treatments restrict availability. During the last two decades, plants have served as a low-cost platform for biopharmaceuticals production and have been applied to fight against rabies during the last two decades. Herein, I provide a description of the state of the art in the development of plant-made pharmaceuticals against rabies and identify key prospects for the field in terms of novel strategies, immunogen design, and therapeutic antibod

Malaria is an infectious disease causing almost one million deaths each year. There is an urgent need for discovery of new antimalarial compounds. Natural products have been the single most productive source of leads for the development of drugs, because of their great variety of chemical structures. This review covers studies on antimalarial natural products isolated from plants, published from January 2010 until April 2012. A total of 171 structures comprising alkaloids, terpenoids, phenolics and other metabolites are listed in this review, including information on their antiplasmodial and c

Undesirable side effects that result from the indiscriminate use of agricultural pesticides in developing countries are widespread. This has captured the attention of health workers, governments, and environmental protection agencies. In fact, the potential health effects of long-term exposure to humans, animals, and higher plants are of great concern. This study examines the effects of agricultural pesticides on such living forms and explores modes of action, and presents strategies to minimize the deleterious effects of pesticides to living forms in developing countries.

Eight cases of today rather rare infections of the brain and spinal cord with animal and plant parasites are described. Echinococcus was identified in one patient, cysticercus cellulosis in 4 and in 3 patients various fungi (actinomycosis Meyerii, aspergillus fumigatus, nokardiose asteroides) were found. Prior to the admission to the hospital none of these patients were correctly diagnosed. Animal parasites mimicked the symptomatology of a brain tumour or of a space occupying process. If localised intraspinally they produced signs similar to prolapsed lumbar disc. Plant parasites caused format

Plant base editing enables targeted nucleotide substitutions and provides a powerful approach for functional genomics and crop improvement. The toolkit has expanded from canonical cytosine and adenine editors to dual-base, transversion, Cas12-based, and organelle-targeted systems, broadening the range of accessible mutations and genomic targets. These advances create new opportunities for generating useful alleles, modifying gene function, and enabling directed evolution. However, expanded base-editing capabilities do not necessarily ensure predictable outcomes or successful breeding applicati

LIM (Lin-11, Isl-1, and Mec-3 domain) proteins are evolutionarily conserved proteins that regulate diverse cellular processes in plants, including actin cytoskeleton organization, organ size determination, protein stability, and transcription-associated regulation. Therefore, these proteins have emerged as important regulators of plant growth, development, and responses to biotic and abiotic stresses. Numerous genome-wide studies, functional analyses, and mechanistic investigations in diverse plant species have considerably expanded our understanding of this gene family. However, these advance

PURPOSE: Hospitals increasingly seek to align patient meals with sustainable food policies while ensuring nutritional adequacy and patient acceptance. However, the limited availability of palatable high-protein plant-derived meals with complete amino acid profiles hampers implementation. This study aimed to develop and evaluate fully plant-derived hospital meals for nutritional adequacy, palatability, cost-effectiveness, and feasibility within sustainable food policy frameworks.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary, co-creative study was conducted between April and December 2025 with hospital staff a

AFPs (ABI5-BINDING PROTEINS) are a unique class of small, plant-specific proteins, originally identified through their interaction with ABI5 (ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE 5), a pivotal transcription factor in ABA (ABSCISIC ACID) signaling pathway. Emerging evidence indicates that AFPs act as multifunctional integrators governing not only ABA signaling but also a broad spectrum of plant growth, development, biotic and abiotic stress adaptation. This review systematically summarizes the domain architecture, interactome networks, and evolutionary conservation of AFPs, and further highlights the plei

Sulfur (S), an essential macroelement, plays important roles in plant numerous physiological processes. Through sulfur assimilation pathways, plants biosynthesize various S-containing compounds, including the gasotransimitter hydrogen sulfide (H2S), the primary organic S-containing amino acid cysteine (Cys), the master antioxidant glutathione (GSH), and the characteristic secondary metabolites such as glucosinolates (GSLs). Current studies have established the wide involvement of S-containing metabolites in orchestrating plant development and stimuli responses, however, the interplay and cross
