Dietary Plant Polyphenols as the Potential Drugs in Neurodegenerative Diseases: Current Evidence, Advances, and Opportunities.

Neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and Huntington's disease (HD), are characterized by the progressive degeneration of neurons. Although the etiology and pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases have been studied intensively, the mechanism is still in its infancy. In general, most neurodegenerative diseases share common molecular mechanisms, and multiple risks interact and promote the pathologic process of neurogenerative diseases. At present, most of the approved drugs only alleviate the clinical symptoms but fail to cure neurodegenerat

[Determining the occupational risk of skin diseases at the chemical plant "G. Genov" in Ruse].

A study is performed on workers from some productions of a Chemical Plant--H-acid, phthalic anhydride, ferrum-oxidate dyes and lacquers, in view of estimating the occupational risk of skin diseases. It is established that the highest occupational risk of skin diseases to which workers are exposed is in the production "H-acid"--25.8%, followed by "Phthalic anhydride"--13.2% and "Ferrum-oxidate dyes"--13%. The epicutaneous test shows positivation of the samples with phthalic-anhydride in 20% of the examined. In those engaged in the production of ferrum-oxidate dyes positive tests are observed in

Application and antagonistic mechanisms of atoxigenic Aspergillus strains for the management of fungal plant diseases.

This review covers, for the first time, all methods based on the use of Aspergillus strains as biocontrol agents for the management of plant diseases caused by fungi and oomycetes. Atoxigenic Aspergillus strains have been screened in a variety of hosts, such as peanuts, maize kernels, and legumes, during the preharvest and postharvest stages. These strains have been screened against a wide range of pathogens, such as Fusarium, Phytophthora, and Pythium species, suggesting a broad applicability spectrum. The highest efficacies were generally observed when using non-toxigenic Aspergillus strains

Genetic analysis of plant disease resistance pathways.

Plant disease resistance (R) genes are introduced into high yielding crop varieties to improve resistance to agronomically important pathogens. The R gene-encoded proteins are recognitionally specific, interacting directly or indirectly with corresponding pathogen avirulence (avr) determinants, and are therefore under strong diversifying selection pressure to evolve new recognition capabilities. Genetic analyses in different plant species have also revealed more broadly recruited resistance signalling genes that provide further targets for manipulation in crop improvement strategies. Interplay of signaling pathways in plant disease resistance.

Plants are under constant threat of infection by pathogens armed with a diverse array of effector molecules to colonize their host. Plants have, in turn, evolved sophisticated detection and response systems that decipher pathogen signals and induce appropriate defenses. Genetic analysis of plant mutants impaired in mounting a resistance response to invading pathogens has uncovered a number of distinct, but interconnecting, signaling networks that are under both positive and negative control. These pathways operate, at least partly, through the action of small signaling molecules such as salicy

SA, JA, ethylene, and disease resistance in plants.

Exciting advances have been made during the past year: isolating mutants affecting plant disease resistance, cloning genes involved in the regulation of various defense responses, and characterizing novel defense signaling pathways. Recent studies have demonstrated that jasmonic acid and ethylene are important for the induction of nonspecific disease resistance through signaling pathways that are distinct from the classical systemic acquired resistance response pathway regulated by salicylic acid.

Phytomelatonin as a central molecule in plant disease resistance.

Melatonin is an essential phytohormone in the regulation of many plant processes, including during plant development and in response to stress. Pathogen infections cause serious damage to plants and reduce agricultural production. Recent studies indicate that melatonin plays important roles in alleviating bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases in plants and post-harvest fruits. Herein, we summarize information related to the effects of melatonin on plant disease resistance. Melatonin, reactive oxygen species, and reactive nitrogen species form a complex loop in plant-pathogen interaction to reg

Parkinson's disease, dopaminergic drugs and the plant world.

A large proportion of drugs used for the treatment of neurological disorders relate to naturally occurring compounds, many of which are plant alkaloids. This is particularly true of Parkinson's disease (PD). The pharmacopoeia of PD has strong botanical origins, while major discoveries about the neurochemistry of the basal ganglia came from the study of phytochemicals. This article narrates the development of pharmacotherapy for PD in terms of historically important plant-derived substances-tropane and hamala alkaloids, reserpine, levodopa, apomorphine, and ergoline dopamine receptor agonists.

Plant alkaloids as drug leads for Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative illness associated with dementia and is most prevalent among the elderly population. Current medications can only treat symptoms. Alkaloids are structurally diverse and have been an important source of therapeutics for various brain disorders. Two US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for AD, galantamine and rivastigmine, are in fact alkaloids. In addition, clinical trials of four other extensively studied alkaloids-huperzine A, caffeine, nicotine, and indomethacin-have been conducted but do not convincing

Signaling cross-talk in plant disease resistance.

Hormone signaling crosstalk plays a major role in plant defense against a wide range of both biotic and abiotic stresses. While many reviews on plant-microbe interactions have well described the general trends of signaling pathways in shaping host responses to pathogens, few discussions have considered a synthesis of positive versus negative interactions among such pathways, or variations in the signaling molecules themselves. This review deals with the interaction trends between salicylic, jasmonic, and abscisic acids in the signaling pathways, as well as exceptions to such trends. Here we fo

Natural cross-kingdom transmission of a novel ssDNA mycovirus confers broad-spectrum resistance to plant diseases.

Cross-kingdom virus transmission between plants and fungi remains rare in nature. Here, a novel circular ssDNA virus, Diaporthe pseudophoenicicola DNA virus 1 (DpDV1), was identified from the phytopathogenic fungus Diaporthe pseudophoenicicola. DpDV1 attenuates the pathogenicity of both its original and experimental host fungi, demonstrating its potential as a biocontrol agent against fungal phytopathogens. Remarkably, DpDV1 displays bidirectional plant-fungal transmission capability without inducing observable phenotypic changes in plant hosts, overcoming the limitations imposed by vegetative

Plant-derived bioactives, the gut-brain axis, and neurodegenerative diseases: mechanistic roles of diet-microbiota interactions.

Diet is increasingly recognized as a potential upstream modulator of the gut-brain axis (GBA) through its effects on the microbiome, microbial metabolites, and host immune and endocrine responses. The GBA is a complex, bidirectional network connecting the gastrointestinal tract and central nervous system, with diet influencing microbial community structure and metabolic output. Plant-based diets, such as Mediterranean and MIND, have been associated with increased production of anti-inflammatory microbial metabolites and improved barrier function, while high calorie/low nutrient diets are often

Plant-Derived Exosome-Like Nanoparticles in Neurodegenerative Diseases: From Dual Bioactive-Delivery Roles to Translational Challenges.

Neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related disorders, remain difficult to treat because of their multifactorial pathogenesis, limited disease-modifying therapies, and insufficient central nervous system exposure of many therapeutic agents. Plant-derived exosome-like nanoparticles (PELNs) are emerging as biogenic nanovesicles that combine intrinsic bioactivity with natural nanocarrier properties. Enriched with lipids, proteins, small RNAs, and phytochemicals, PELNs may exert neuroprotective effects while offering opportunities for gastrointestinal stability, s
