PREMISE: The coexistence of females and hermaphrodites, or gynodioecy, requires that females have a reproductive advantage over hermaphrodites in offspring quality and/or quantity. Female advantage can be mediated by a variety of ecological factors, including interactions with antagonists such as pre-dispersal seed predators. We compared differential rates of seed predation on hermaphrodites and females in Sidalcea campestris to assess the potential role of seed predators in gynodioecy maintenance.
METHODS: We evaluated rates of seed predation in 28 populations of S. campestris, a gynodioecio

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Contrasting life-history traits can evolve through generations of dwarf plant ecotypes, yet such phenotypic changes often involve decreased plant size and reproductive allocation, which can configure seed dispersal patterns and, subsequently, population demography. Therefore, evolutionary transitions to dwarfism can represent good study systems to test the roles of life-history traits in population demography by comparing genetic structure between related but phenotypically divergent ecotypes.
METHODS: In this study, we examined an ecotypic taxon pair of the world's small

Habitat fragmentation is a leading cause of plant extinctions, yet predicting which species are most vulnerable remains a key challenge. We propose that population connectivity, and thus gene flow via pollination and seed dispersal, can be inferred from plant traits. We integrate these traits into a connectivity-trait dimension, which, together with breeding system, life-history traits, and landscape context, ranks species at risk of genetic erosion and local extinction, providing an early-warning triage tool. By linking traits to gene flow mechanisms, the framework helps prioritise investment

Anthocyanins are a group of common phenolic compounds in plants. They are mainly detected in flowers and fruits, are believed to play different important roles such as in the attraction of animals and seed dispersal, and also in the increase of the antioxidant response in tissues directly or indirectly affected by biotic or abiotic stress factors. As a major group of secondary metabolites in plants commonly consumed as food, they are of importance in both the food industry and human nutrition. It is known that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can influence the plant secondary metabolic pathwa

Rising atmospheric CO2 levels may alter behavioral dynamics that mediate species interactions, a largely overlooked dimension of ecosystem functioning. Aphids offer a tractable model for examining these modifications, as their primary protection from natural enemies relies on the alarm pheromone (E)-β-farnesene (Eβf). Facultative aphid endosymbionts like Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa complicate this dynamic by modifying parasitoid resistance and associated behaviors, yet their interaction with elevated CO2 remains largely unexplored. Using a single clone of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum

Urban airborne spores and pollen serve as valuable bioindicators for assessing biodiversity and ecosystem health. Traditional monitoring approaches predominantly correlate spore-pollen dispersal dynamics with meteorological variables, largely overlooking their intrinsic biological attributes and evolutionary context. This study adopted an evolutionary ecology framework to investigate the temporal dynamics of airborne spores and pollen in Kunming, a subtropical plateau city in China. Integrating one-year gravimetric sampling with eDNA metabarcoding, we analyzed how regional phylogenetic history

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Janzen-Connell model predicts that common species suffer high seed predation from specialized natural enemies as a function of distance from parent trees, and consequently as a function of conspecific density, whereas the predator satiation hypothesis predicts that seed attack is reduced due to predator satiation at high seed densities. Pre-dispersal predation by insects was studied while seeds are still on parent trees, which represents a frequently overlooked stage in which seed predation occurs.
METHODS: Reproductive tree density and seed production were investigat

Lepidopteran pests and phytopathogenic fungi are major biotic threats to crop health and productivity, yet their interactions remain poorly integrated into current frameworks of insect-microbe and plant disease ecology. Lepidopteran pests and fungal pathogens often share common ecological niches on host plants, particularly damaged tissues and microbe-rich interfaces. Chewing damage, frass deposition and movement by lepidopteran pests can create opportunities for fungal dispersal and invasion. This review synthesizes current knowledge on lepidopteran pest-phytopathogenic fungus-plant (LPP) tri

Frugivorous birds play a vital role in tropical forests by dispersing seeds and facilitating plant regeneration. The effectiveness of frugivores, including birds, as seed dispersers depends in part on their fruit removal rates. Although invasive alien plants (IAP) may influence the seed-dispersal role of birds in varied ways, few comparative field studies have dealt with avian frugivore-plant interactions, particularly in settings of advanced invasion on oceanic islands. We assess how IAP influences birds' attack rates on fruit models, to explore the ecological and conservation implications fo

Recent developments in molecular methods for fecal analysis to assess the food habits (scatology) of herbivores have been controversial in terms of accurately identifying which specific plant parts were consumed and quantifying the amount of food ingested. To address this critical issue, traditional methods should be used to describe a multi-component plant diet that expresses the contribution of taxon-specific morphologically differentiated plant parts. Here we present quantitative data from our original high-resolution taxon- and morpho-specific dietary study based on cuticle microhistologic

Background and aimsRoads as corridors of seed or fruit spatial dispersal have major impacts on the establishment and spread of invasive species, but their precise role in population genetic variation remains poorly understood. The South American weed Mikania micrantha has spread rapidly across southern China since its introduction to the Shenzhen area in 1984. This study investigated how its genetic diversity is distributed along highways, and whether highways have acted as corridors for the rapid expansion of M. micrantha METHODS: Twenty-seven roadside populations were sampled along four high

A case study was conducted to evaluate the SO2 emission reduction in a power plant in Central Mexico, as a result of the shifting of fuel oil to natural gas. Emissions of criteria pollutants, greenhouse gases, organic and inorganic toxics were estimated based on a 2010 report of hourly fuel oil consumption at the "Francisco Pérez Ríos" power plant in Tula, Mexico. For SO2, the dispersion of these emissions was assessed with the CALPUFF dispersion model. Emissions reductions of > 99% for SO2, PM and Pb, as well as reductions >50% for organic and inorganic toxics were observed when simulating th

Stomata play important roles in plant responses to phytopathogens, but less is known about their roles in plant-herbivore interactions. Herbivore damage commonly closes stomata but also elicits the release of herbivory-induced plant volatiles, important mediators of plant-herbivore interactions. Here, we examined the responses in tomato plants attacked by the invasive tomato leafminer (Phthorimaea absoluta), the larvae of which performed better on infested plants, while ovipositing adults were repelled by larvae-infested plants, which were distinct from those induced by two other tomato pests,

Endophytes are diverse microorganisms inhabiting plant tissues that can promote plant growth, enhance stress tolerance, or suppress pathogens. However, the ecological roles of endophytes after host senescence and death remain poorly understood. This review examines how a subset of endophytes helps maintain ecosystem function in living plants, senescent tissues, litter, and associated microbial environments. Mechanisms of endophyte-mediated plant protection in living plants include pathogen inhibition, host regulation, nutrient acquisition, and abiotic stress tolerance. We also investigate post

Power plant's site selection is a complex task and involves through analyses of multi-disciplinary processes which are interlinked with each other. The site selection for nuclear power plants additionally requires an assessment of radiation doses to the environment and public during normal operation and in the case of an accident. This demands the problem of radioactive particles' dispersion in atmosphere to be analysed in real time for a comprehensive set of radioactive release scenarios in prevailing meteorological conditions in the plant surroundings. In this study, a local scale atmospheri

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Morphological matching between flower and pollinator traits has been documented in diverse plant lineages. Indeed, the matching of corolla tube length and pollinator tongue length has been cited repeatedly as a classic case of coevolution. However, there are many possible evolutionary routes to trait matching. Our aim here is both to review the evolutionary mechanisms of plant-pollinator trait matching and to investigate a specific case of trait matching/mismatching in a genus of alpine gingers.
METHODS: Roscoea gingers with long corolla tubes in the western Himalayas hav

The Early Cretaceous diversification of birds was a major event in the history of terrestrial ecosystems, occurring during the earliest phase of the Cretaceous Terrestrial Revolution, long before the origin of the bird crown-group. Frugivorous birds play an important role in seed dispersal today. However, evidence of fruit consumption in early birds from outside the crown-group has been lacking. Jeholornis is one of the earliest-diverging birds, only slightly more crownward than Archaeopteryx, but its cranial anatomy has been poorly understood, limiting trophic information which may be gleaned

Rhodotypos scandens (Thunb.) Makino is known to have a seed dispersal that is thick and stony (endocarp + seeds) and has potential as a landscaping tree seed. In several Rosaceae species, seeds are covered with a hard endocarp, making the internal seeds water-impermeable and germination difficult. Here, we analyzed the morphoanatomical traits and germination properties of R. scandens seeds. To identify ideal seed propagation conditions, we immersed R. scandens seeds in sulfuric acid for varying durations and subjected them to phytohormone (gibberellic acid A3 and fluridone) and a cold stratifi

Plant recruitment-the transition from seed dispersal to seedling establishment-is a vulnerable stage strongly shaped by canopy plants, which modify microclimates, soils, and biotic interactions relative to open ground. Using a global database covering 142 communities across ten terrestrial biomes, we examined canopy effects on taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity at global and local scales, quantified with Hill numbers (q = 0, 1, 2) to weight rare, common, and dominant species. Globally, canopy microsites hosted five times more exclusive species and over three times more evolutionary history t
