Penoxsulam-resistant barnyardgrass-mediated rhizosphere microbial communities affect the growth of rice.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass is escalating in paddy fields, yet the interactions between resistant weeds and rice are largely unknown. The microbiota of herbicide-resistant barnyardgrass rhizosphere soil is critical for both barnyardgrass and rice fitness. RESULTS: Rice has different biomass allocation and root traits in the presence of penoxsulam-resistant versus penoxsulam-susceptible barnyardgrass or in their conditioned soil. Compared to susceptible barnyardgrass, resistant barnyardgrass led to an allelopathic increase in rice root, shoot, and whole-plant

Understanding the bacterial community structure associated with the Eichhornia crassipes rootzone.

BACKGROUND: Plant microbiome acts as an interface between plants and their environment, aiding in the functioning of the ecosystem, such as protection against abiotic and biotic stress along with improving nutrient uptake. The rhizosphere is an essential interface for the interaction between plants and microbes and plays a substantial part in the removal as well as uptake of heavy metals and antibiotics from contaminated locations. Eichhornia crassipes is a promising plant that contains a rich community of microbes in its rhizosphere. Microorganism's association with plants embodies a crucial

Transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches elucidate the systemic response of wheat plants under waterlogging.

Extreme weather conditions lead to significant imbalances in crop productivity, which in turn affect food security. Flooding events cause serious problems for many crop species such as wheat. Although metabolic readjustments under flooding are important for plant regeneration, underlying processes remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the systemic response of wheat to waterlogging using metabolomics and transcriptomics. A 12 d exposure to excess water triggered nutritional imbalances and disruption of metabolite synthesis and translocation, reflected by reductions in plant biomass an

Root exudate-mediated assemblage of rhizo-microbiome enhances Fusarium wilt suppression in chrysanthemum.

Intercropping is emerging as a sustainable strategy to manage soil-borne diseases, yet the underlying mechanisms remain largely elusive. Here, we investigated how intercropping chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium) with ginger (Zingiber officinale) suppressed Fusarium wilt and influenced the associated rhizo-microbiome. Chrysanthemum plants in intercropping systems exhibited a marked reduction in wilt severity and greater biomass compared to those grown in monoculture. In contrast, soil sterilization intensified wilt severity and abrogated the benefits of intercropping, highlighting the cri

Response-based selection of barley cultivars and legume species for complementarity: Root morphology and exudation in relation to nutrient source.

Phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) use efficiency may be improved through increased biodiversity in agroecosystems. Phenotypic variation in plants' response to nutrient deficiency may influence positive complementarity in intercropping systems. A multicomponent screening approach was used to assess the influence of P supply and N source on the phenotypic plasticity of nutrient foraging traits in barley (H. vulgare L.) and legume species. Root morphology and exudation were determined in six plant nutrient treatments. A clear divergence in the response of barley and legumes to the nutrient treatmen

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Promote Nodulation and N2 Fixation in Soybean by Specific Root Exudates.

Legume plants commonly associate with both arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and rhizobia and thus enhance the acquisition of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) nutrition. Inoculation with AM fungi can promote nodulation and N2 fixation of legume plants; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, root exudates collected from AM-colonised soybean plants showed greater accumulation of the specific flavonoids (daidzein and genistein) and phenolic acids (benzoic acid and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid), and significantly promoted nodulation. Furthermore, the exudates from AM-colonised

Common and specific responses to iron and phosphorus deficiencies in roots of apple tree (Malus × domestica).

Iron and phosphorus are abundant elements in soils but poorly available for plant nutrition. The availability of these two nutrients represents a major constraint for fruit tree cultivation such as apple (Malus × domestica) leading very often to a decrease of fruit productivity and quality worsening. Aim of this study was to characterize common and specific features of plant response to Fe and P deficiencies by ionomic, transcriptomic and exudation profiling of apple roots. Under P deficiency, the root release of oxalate and flavonoids increased. Genes encoding for transcription factors and tr

Pseudomonas fluorescens Transportome Is Linked to Strain-Specific Plant Growth Promotion in Aspen Seedlings under Nutrient Stress.

Diverse communities of bacteria colonize plant roots and the rhizosphere. Many of these rhizobacteria are symbionts and provide plant growth promotion (PGP) services, protecting the plant from biotic and abiotic stresses and increasing plant productivity by providing access to nutrients that would otherwise be unavailable to roots. In return, these symbiotic bacteria receive photosynthetically-derived carbon (C), in the form of sugars and organic acids, from plant root exudates. PGP activities have been characterized for a variety of forest tree species and are important in C cycling and seque

Changes in composition and concentration of differential metabolites in root exudates are associated with aluminum-tolerance of Ricinus communis under a high CO2 environment.

Root exudates are the most direct performance for plants responding to adverse environments, and are also important media for materials exchange, energy transmission and information communication between the roots and rhizosphere. However, how plant roots and exudates respond to aluminum (Al) stress under elevated CO2 concentration (eCO2) is still unclear. Ricinus communis is a famous oilseed crop throughout the world, which has strong tolerance to metal contaminated soil. In the present study, root physiological changes and the exudates of this species under aluminum stress and eCO2 based on

Striking Diversification of Exudate Profiles in Selected Primula Lineages.

In continuation of previous studies on glandular exudates of Primula, we analyzed eleven so far unstudied species and several populations for exudate composition. Unsubstituted flavone and unusually substituted flavones, normally predominant in Primula exudates, were not detected in all of the analyzed samples. Instead, some species exhibited regular substituted flavonoids, and in some cases, no flavonoids could be detected at all. The detection of a diterpene (1) in P. minima exudates is new to Primula. On basis of MS and NMR, 1 was structurally characterized as ent-kaur-16-en-19-oic acid. Co

Identification of anthecotuloide reveals a chemical mechanism underlying Anthemis cotula L. invasiveness.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Allelopathy underpins the competitive success of many invasive plants, yet direct chemical ecological links remain scarce. Here, we combined untargeted metabolomics with bioassays to analyse the allelopathic role of the invasive Anthemis cotula, and examine how its signature allelochemical drives invasion dynamics through differential phytotoxic effects on co-occurring plant species. METHODS: LC-QTOF metabolite profiling of leaf litter, roots, root exudates, and soils from invaded and uninvaded sites was performed to identify signature metabolites. The sesquiterpene lacto

Priming Effects on Soil Organic Matter Mineralization by Carbon Substrates: A Global Meta-Analysis.

Priming effects (PE) on soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization depend strongly on the type of carbon substrates added. It is crucial to understand the PE induced by various carbon substrates for predicting SOM dynamics and soil-atmosphere carbon feedback. We conducted a meta-analysis of 8015 observations from 283 articles to evaluate how carbon substrates (plant residues, root exudates, biochar, and degradable microplastics) regulate the mineralization of SOM through PE. Results demonstrated that all these types of carbon substrates increased SOM mineralization, which induced a positive PE.

Iron fertilization to enhance tolerance mechanisms to copper toxicity of ryegrass plants used as cover crop in vineyards.

Ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a plant species that can express mechanisms of tolerance to copper (Cu) toxicity. Therefore, the agronomical approach of intercropping system with ryegrass may represent a promising tool to limit the onset of Cu toxicity symptoms in the other intercropped plants species, particularly when an inadequate nutrient availability like iron (Fe) shortage is also concurrently present. This study aimed at assessing the mechanisms involved in the mitigation of Cu phytotoxicity and the stress effects on plant growth, root morphology and nutrition of ryegrass fertilized wit

Linalool-triggered plant-soil feedback drives defense adaptation in dense maize plantings.

High planting density boosts crop yields but also heightens pest and pathogen risks. How plants adapt their defenses under these conditions remains unclear. In this study, we reveal that maize enhances its defense in high-density conditions through a plant-soil feedback mechanism triggered by the leaf volatile linalool. Linalool activates jasmonate signaling in neighboring plants and promotes root exudation of benzoxazinoids, especially 2-(2-hydroxy-4,7-dimethoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one)-β-d-glucopyranose (HDMBOA-Glc). These exudates in turn reshape the rhizosphere microbiome composition to favor

Rhizosphere Dialogue: Microorganisms Mediated by Root Exudates Alleviate Drought Stress in Grasses.

Drought stress threatens the ecological functions and economic value of grasses, posing a major challenge to their sustainable production. Plants co-evolve with rhizosphere microbial communities, sometimes described as the plant's second genome, that can contribute to drought adaptation. Drought alters root architecture, hormonal and redox regulation and belowground carbon allocation, thereby modifying the quantity and composition of root exudation and reshaping the rhizosphere environment. This review uses the rhizosphere dialogue as an integrative framework to link these plant responses with

Citric acid secretion from rice roots contributes to reduction and immobilization of Cr(VI) by driving microbial sulfur and iron cycle in paddy soil.

Root exudates released by plants can promote microbial growth and activity, thereby affecting the transformation and availability of soil pollutants. However, the effects of the root exudates of rice plants on chromium (Cr) transformation in paddy soils and the underlying mechanisms are yet to be elucidated properly. The present study investigated how rice root exudates interact with rhizosphere microorganisms to influence the transformation of Cr and explored the key components in root exudates that affect Cr(VI) reduction. The results showed that the addition of root exudate and citric acid

Arabidopsis uses distinct coumarins and bacterial pathways for pH-adaptive iron acquisition.

Iron (Fe) limitation restricts plant growth in diverse soils, and root-associated microbes can alleviate plant Fe starvation. Whether plants integrate the edaphic environment and microbial activities into their Fe uptake strategies remains unclear. We show that bacterium-mediated alleviation of Fe deficiency in Arabidopsis functions at varying environmental pH and is taxonomically widespread among root microbiota isolates from soils with different edaphic profiles. This process is regulated by host-controlled and pH-adapted root exudation of different coumarin chemotypes. These exometabolites

Root exudates drive metabolic remodeling of microbial and resistance to facilitate sulfonamide biodegradation in karst soil-carbonate rock interface.

Sulfonamide antibiotics have become pervasive contaminants in karst systems, where low carbon and rapid infiltration hinder natural attenuation, leading to persistent groundwater pollution and elevated antibiotic resistance risks. Although root exudates shape soil microbial metabolism and resistance, their role at the karst soil-carbonate rock interface remains unclear. This study demonstrates that artificial root exudates (ARE) significantly boost sulfamethazine (SMZ) removal at the soil-carbonate rock interface, achieving up to 92.0 % (35.1 % higher than control). Analyses of 16S rRNA gene s

Metabolomic fingerprint of Reynoutria japonica (Polygonaceae) using suspect screening with LC-HRMS and untargeted approach with GC-HRMS.

Knotweed (Reynoutria japonica) is an invasive plant whose ecological dominance in its invasive range may partly rely on allelopathic interactions mediated by root exudates and especially secondary metabolites of wide polarity range. To elucidate the chemical diversity of these exudates, a metabolomic strategy combining liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and gas chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) was employed. After optimization of EcoRoot methodology with design of experiment (DoE), root exudates were sampled with 3 d
