Persistence and survival of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts on lamb's lettuce leaves during plant growth and in washing conditions of minimally-processed salads.

Cryptosporidium is the causative agent of cryptosporidiosis, which results, among others, in profuse diarrhoea. Transmission to humans occurs via the faecal-oral route directly by contact with infected hosts or indirectly by waterborne or foodborne routes. For the latter, parasite transmission is closely linked to the oocyst's ability to persist and survive in food matrices. In this study, we evaluated the persistence and survival of Cryptosporidium oocysts in lamb's lettuce: i) during plant growth and ii) in conditions mimicking the industrial washing process applied in minimally-processed ve

Protein composition, chlorophyll, carotenoids, and cyanide content of cassava leaves (Manihot esculenta Crantz) as influenced by cultivar, plant age, and leaf position.

The variation of proximate compositions, amino acids, carotenoids, chlorophyll, and total cyanide contents in cassava leaves was studied to identify the most suitable leaves for human consumption. The cassava leaves from 4 cultivars were analysed at 3 leaf positions as well as at 2 plant ages. The leaves of 'Rayong 5' cultivar from the middle position at 6 months after planting contained the highest crude protein, amino acids, carotenoids, and chlorophyll. The total cyanide content was high and therefore, an effective detoxification method is needed. Protein from the cassava leaves was rich in

A Novel HPLC Method for Direct Detection of Nitric Oxide Scavengers from Complex Plant Matrices and Its Application to Aloysia triphylla Leaves.

The present study aimed at developing an original pre-column HPLC assay allowing rapid characterization of nitric oxide (NO) scavengers from complex plant extracts. Sodium nitroprusside (SNP) was employed as a NO donor and spiked with an aqueous extract from Aloysia triphylla leaves prior to HPLC analysis. Relying on the ability of radical scavenging constituents to be oxidized upon reaction with radicals, this assay successfully allowed direct identification of three potential NO scavengers, including verbascoside, isoverbascoside, and luteolin-7-O-diglucuronide. These three phenolics were al

Rapid determination of methyl salicylate, a plant-signaling compound, in tomato leaves by direct sample introduction and thermal desorption followed by GC-MS.

Many plants infested by herbivores or viruses can rapidly produce and accumulate a plant-signaling compound, methyl salicylate (MeSA), in their leaves to activate disease resistance. In the present work, a simple, rapid, and sensitive method was developed for the determination of MeSA in tomato leaves by direct sample introduction and thermal desorption followed by GC-MS. Results show that the proposed method has a low detection limit (0.08 ng mg(-1)) and good precision (RSD = 8.9%). The present method was applied to the investigation of tomato plant defense response to tobacco mosaic virus (T

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a major factor limiting the growth and development of plants. Mulberry (Morus alba L.) is an important fruit tree crop that requires Mg for optimal growth and yield, especially in acid soils. However, the molecular mechanism of Mg stress tolerance in mulberry plants remains unknown. In this study, we used next-generation sequencing technology and biochemical analysis to profile the transcriptome and physiological changes of mulberry leaves under different Mg treatments (deficiency: 0 mM, low: 1 mM, moderate low: 2 mM, sufficiency: 3 mM, toxicity: 6 mM, higher toxic

Development of a rapid biolistic assay to determine changes in relative levels of intracellular calcium in leaves following tetracycline uptake by pinto bean plants.

Tetracycline antibiotics, such as chlortetracycline (CTC) and tetracycline (TC), are introduced into agricultural lands through the application of manure as fertilizer. These compounds are phytotoxic to certain crop plants, including pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris), the species used for this investigation. While the mechanism of this toxicity is not yet understood, CTC is known to be a calcium chelator. We describe here a novel method to show that CTC is taken up by pinto bean plants and chelates calcium in leaves. Cameleon fusion proteins can provide qualitative and quantitative imaging of i

Metabolomics and physio-chemical analyses of mulberry plants leaves response to manganese deficiency and toxicity reveal key metabolites and their pathways in manganese tolerance.

INTRODUCTION: Manganese (Mn) plays a pivotal role in plant growth and development. Aside aiding in plant growth and development, Mn as heavy metal (HM) can be toxic in soil when applied in excess. Morus alba is an economically significant plant, capable of adapting to a range of environmental conditions and possessing the potential for phytoremediation of contaminated soil by HMs. The mechanism by which M. alba tolerates Mn stresses remains obscure. METHODS: In this study, Mn concentrations comprising sufficiency (0.15 mM), higher regimes (1.5 mM and 3 mM), and deficiency (0 mM and 0.03 mM),
