Night and day: Contributions of diurnal and nocturnal visitors to pollen dispersal, paternity diversity, and fruit set in an early-blooming shrub, Daphne jezoensis.

PREMISE: Under uncertain pollinator visit conditions, plants often exhibit long flowering periods and generalized pollination systems. Flowering of the gynodioecious shrub Daphne jezoensis occurs in early spring in cool temperate forests. Pollination by nocturnal moths is expected, given the species' tubular-shaped flowers with sweet fragrance and nectar. However, the effectiveness of nocturnal moths under cool conditions is unknown. We evaluated the relative importance of diurnal and nocturnal visitors as pollinators in early spring. METHODS: We investigated flowering duration, flower visito

Degree of style coiling is associated with corolla-tube length in the nectarless flowers of Roscoea schneideriana.

The plant-pollinator 'arms race' model posits that a major driver of the evolution of elongated corollas in flowers is reciprocal selection for 'morphological fit' between pollinator-tongue length and access distance to nectar (usually corolla-tube length). Evidence for the pollinator-mediated selection on tube length and evolution of multiple, correlated floral traits remains inconclusive. To gain possible insights into the strength of stabilizing selection by assessing standing phenotypic variation, we measured a series of functionally important floral traits, including corolla tube length a

Characterizing probiotic properties of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ABO1 strain isolated from toddy palm nectar.

Cardiovascular diseases are strongly associated with high cholesterol levels, which also cause hypertension and diabetes. It is important to have optimal cholesterol levels for general well-being. This research is intended to screen, isolate, and identify probiotic yeast strains with cholesterol-reducing ability from toddy palm nectar. Out of 63 isolates, five strains ABO1, ABO11, ABO13, ABO20, and ABO21 had probiotic characteristics. Among the five isolates, ABO1 showed the highest probiotic traits and was characterized as Saccharomyces cerevisiae ABO1 by molecular-level characterization. Cho

Morphological diversity in the honeyeater hyolingual apparatus and its relationship with nectarivory.

Honeyeaters (Aves, Meliphagidae) are a speciose clade of nectarivorous birds, and there is immense diversity in the degree to which different species within the family rely on nectar. Honeyeater tongues are commonly described as similar to a paintbrush, with this morphology being interpreted as an adaptation for increasing nectar extraction efficiency. However, there has been limited work documenting the degree of interspecific diversity in tongue morphology across the family or the extent to which such diversity correlates with dependance on nectar. This information is also lacking for the hy

How is Trehalulose Formed by Australian Stingless Bees? - An Intermolecular Displacement of Nectar Sucrose.

Trehalulose, a rare sucrose isomer, is a dominant sugar in stingless bee honey, with traces of the trisaccharide erlose. Incubating sucrose solutions with macerated stingless bee parts (head, thorax, and abdomen) from Tetragonula carbonaria, we observed that sucrose isomerization occurs predominantly in the head incubations, with trehalulose constituting 76.2-80.0% of total detected sugar. By contrast, sucrose hydrolysis occurred in stingless bee abdomen incubations, with glucose and fructose observed as 48.6-51.7% and 48.3-49.7%, respectively, of total detected sugar. Incubating glucose/fruct

Raising the sugar content--orchid bees overcome the constraints of suction feeding through manipulation of nectar and pollen provisions.

Unlike most other bees, the long-tongued orchid bees ingest nectar using suction feeding. Although long tongues allow exploitation of flowers with deep spurs, the energy intake rate is optimal at 10-20% lower nectar sugar concentrations compared to that of lapping bees. This constraint might be compensated by a higher digestive throughput. Additionally, orchid bees might evaporate water from regurgitated droplets of crop contents. We found male Euglossa championi (n = 10) and Euglossa dodsoni (n = 12) to regularly regurgitate droplets of crop content to the base of their proboscis, generating

Differential effects of type and quantity of leaf damage on growth, reproduction and defence of lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.).

Folivores are major plant antagonists in most terrestrial ecosystems. However, the quantitative effects of leaf area loss on multiple interacting plant traits are still little understood. We sought to contribute to filling this lack of understanding by applying different types of leaf area removal (complete leaflets versus leaflet parts) and degrees of leaf damage (0, 33 and 66%) to lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) plants. We quantified various growth and fitness parameters including above- and belowground biomass as well as the production of reproductive structures (fruits, seeds). In addition,

Floral KNOX Expression Supports Parallel Evolution of Nectar Spurs in Snapdragon Relatives (Antirrhineae: Plantaginaceae).

Nectar spurs are tubular outgrowths of perianth tissue-a key innovation that has evolved many times independently in angiosperms. These novel floral structures are tightly linked to pollination and pollinator shifts may explain their role in increasing diversification rates. In the tribe Antirrhineae (Plantaginaceae), nectar spurs on the ventral petal have convergently evolved four times, in the Kickxia clade, Cymbalaria, Chaenorhinum, and Linaria. Here we explore the molecular mechanism underpinning this convergence, by investigating two Class I KNOX genes (HIRZ and INA) across Antirrhineae.

Volatile Insensitivity and Localized Alkaloids Support Commensalism in the Oxytropis sericea-Alternaria oxytropis Association.

The endophytic fungus Alternaria oxytropis is vertically transmitted through silky crazyweed (Oxytropis sericea Nutt.) and produces the neurotoxin swainsonine, yet its influence on host chemical signaling remains unclear. Here we characterize the floral and foliar volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles of endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) O. sericea using dynamic headspace GC-MS on greenhouse- and field-grown plants - the first characterization of volatile profiles in this species. Endophyte infection had a negligible effect on VOC composition, explaining less than 1% of compos

Bait, not reward: CO2-enriched Nepenthes pitchers secrete toxic nectar.

Nepenthes pitchers are leaf-evolved biological traps containing high levels of CO2 within them. Extrafloral nectar (EFN) secreted by these pitchers has long been regarded as the major reward to visiting arthropods, but its chemical constituents and their role in prey capture are least explored. In this study Nepenthes EFNs were isolated, and their sugars, amino acids, proteins, vitamin C and fatty acids were analysed using HPTLC-densitometry, UFLC, and biochemical assays. C:N ratio, minerals and volatiles of EFNs were determined by CHNS, ICP-OES and headspace-GC-MS, respectively; metabolic pro

Mutualism exploitation: predatory drosophilid larvae sugar-trap ants and jeopardize facultative ant-plant mutualism.

An open question in the evolutionary ecology of ant-plant facultative mutualism is how other members of the associated community can affect the interaction to a point where reciprocal benefits are disrupted. While visiting Qualea grandiflora shrubs to collect sugary rewards at extrafloral nectaries, tropical savanna ants deter herbivores and reduce leaf damage. Here we show that larvae of the fly Rhinoleucophenga myrmecophaga, which develop on extrafloral nectaries, lure potentially mutualistic, nectar-feeding ants and prey on them. Foraging ants spend less time on fly-infested foliage. Field

Spider-Plant Interaction: The Role of Extrafloral Nectaries in Spider Attraction and Their Influence on Plant Herbivory and Reproduction.

Spiders, abundant and diverse arthropods which occur in vegetation, have received little attention in studies investigating spider-plant interactions, especially in plants which have extrafloral nectaries (EFNs). This study examines whether spiders attracted to EFNs on the plant Heteropterys pteropetala (Malpighiaceae) function as biological protectors, mitigating leaf herbivory and positively impacting plant fitness, through manipulative experiments. Spiders are attracted to EFNs because, in addition to consuming the resource offered by these structures, they also consume the herbivores that

Odorant receptors for floral- and plant-derived volatiles in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae).

Adult mosquitoes require regular sugar meals, usually floral nectar, to survive and flourish in natural habitats. Both males and females locate potential sugar sources using sensory proteins called odorant receptors activated by plant volatiles that facilitate orientation toward flowers or honeydew. The Yellow Fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), possesses a large repertoire of odorant receptors, many of which are likely to support floral odor detection and nectar-seeking. In this study, we have employed a heterologous expression system and the two-electrode voltage clamping techniq

Bee Pollinators Enhance B-onion Seed Production in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka.

Production of B-onion (Allium cepa), a key cash crop in Sri Lanka, falls short of consumer demand due to limited quality seeds and high cost of commercial seeds. This study investigated the role of insect pollination on B-onion seed production in the dry zone, Sri Lanka, focusing on key pollinators, seed yield, weight and germinability. Experimental plots were established in a home garden in Sigiriya, selecting 50 umbels; 25 opened to insects and 25 covered. Diurnal insect visits and floral resources were observed. Seed yield and germinability were compared between opened and covered flowers.

Nepenthes pitcher plant inspired bio-polymer embedded porous surfaces for oil aquaplaning.

The Nepenthes pitcher plant has inspired surfaces employing a liquid barrier that shields the surface from contaminants. However, such liquid-infused oil-repellent surfaces employ toxic fluorocarbons or unstable polar liquids. Here, we develop a bio-friendly oil-repellent surface using a food-grade bio-polymer coating on a nanoporous surface. By mimicking the pitcher plant's nectar lining, the food-grade polymer absorbs water enhancing its stability against drainage and evaporation. The water-based lubricant is non-toxic, compatible with humid environments and replenishes simply by exposure to

Possible Synergistic Effects of Thymol and Nicotine Against Crithidia bombi Parasitism in Bumble Bees.

Floral nectar contains secondary compounds with antimicrobial properties that can affect not only plant-pollinator interactions, but also interactions between pollinators and their parasites. Although recent work has shown that consumption of plant secondary compounds can reduce pollinator parasite loads, little is known about the effects of dosage or compound combinations. We used the generalist pollinator Bombus impatiens and its obligate gut parasite Crithidia bombi to study the effects of nectar chemistry on host-parasite interactions. In two experiments we tested (1) whether the secondary

Bacteria in Honeybee Crops Are Decoupled from Those in Floral Nectar and Bee Mouths.

Bacteria in the honeybee gut are a well-recognized factor affecting bee health. However, the primary focus of this research has been the hindgut, while the crop, or honey stomach, is assumed to be dominated by environmentally acquired transient taxa that matter little to the bees. To evaluate this assumption, we examined bacterial taxa in the crop and mouth of Apis mellifera and A. cerana japonica foragers and in the nectar of Prunus mume flowers visited by the bees in the Minabe-Tanabe region of Japan. We found that in bacterial composition, the crop was distinct from both the mouth and the n

Myosotis scorpioides L. (Boraginaceae) floral nectary: Micromorphology, fluorescence, and ultrastructure.

The small flowers of Myosotis scorpioides are pollinated by various groups of insects feeding on their nectar accumulating at the base of the corolla tube. To date, only few studies have focused on the anatomy and ultrastructure of nectaries in plants from the family Boraginaceae. The aim of this study was to analyse the structure of the M. scorpioides nectary at different levels of organisation, with special emphasis on its ultrastructure, which has not been investigated so far. The studies were carried out with the use of light, fluorescence, scanning electron, and transmission electron micr

Upper bill bending as an adaptation for nectar feeding in hummingbirds.

Observations of maxillary (upper bill) bending in hummingbirds have been considered an optical illusion, yet a recent description of out-of-phase opening and closing between their bill base and tip suggests a genuine capacity for bill bending. We investigate bill kinematics during nectar feeding in six species of hummingbirds. We employed geometric morphometrics to identify bending zones and combined these data with measurements of bill flexural rigidity from micro-computed tomography scans to better understand the flexing mechanism. We found that the mandible remains in place throughout the l
