Sampling and analysis methods for detecting and monitoring airborne plant pathogens and fungal diversity.

Many important plant diseases are caused by airborne spores. This review explains the aerobiology of plant pathogens, sampling methods for collection of airborne spores, merits of different post-capture diagnostic methods (microscopy, immunology and DNA-based diagnostics) and non-capture (optical or imaging) methods to classify airborne particles. Different sampling, downstream processing and diagnostic methods can affect the efficiency of detection of certain species due to differences in traits such as spore size, adhesive surfaces, electrostatic charge, hydrophobicity, physical toughness an

Antibacterial and antishigellosis activity of Xylopia staudtii (engl. & diels), Annonaceae.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Xylopia staudtii is a medicinal plant which fruits are traditionally used in western Cameroon as a spice in the preparation of soups known for their abdominal cramp relieving properties. Often identified as Xylopia africana, its bark is used in the treatment of dysentery in Mont Cameroun localities. This plant could therefore contain active ingredients against intestinal pathogens, including Shigella spp, which are responsible of the deathly dysenteric diarrhoea. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aims to assess the efficacy of the hydroethanolic extract from Xylopia

A novel water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent probe for monitoring viscosity fluctuations in plants and zebrafish under abiotic stresses.

Viscosity is one of the important microenvironmental parameters of abiotic stress. Abnormal changes in viscosity have been shown to be correlated with pathological activities and diseases of plants. However, current probes may not be suitable for sensing in plants due to their hydrophobicity and the phytochromes found in plants. With this research, we successfully constructed a structurally simple, water-soluble near-infrared fluorescent probe HJA-MQ-D, which can simultaneously monitor dynamic viscosity changes in plants and animal systems. The probe exhibits a relatively long emission wavelen

Phylogeography and evolutionary patterns in Sporothrix spanning more than 14 000 human and animal case reports.

Pathology to vertebrate hosts has emerged repeatedly in the order Ophiostomatales. Occasional infections have been observed in Sporothrix mexicana at a low level of virulence, while the main pathogenic species cluster in a derived clade around S. schenckii s.str. In this paper, phylogeny and epidemiology of the members of this clade were investigated for 99 clinical and 36 environmental strains using four genetic loci, viz. rDNA ITS and partial CAL, TEF1, and TEF3; data are compared with amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) genotyping. The four main species of the pathogenic clade wer

Plant MIR156 regulates intestinal growth in mammals by targeting the Wnt/β-catenin pathway.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are important negative regulators of genes involved in physiological and pathological processes in plants and animals. Recent studies have shown that miRNAs might regulate gene expression among different species in a cross-kingdom manner. However, the specific roles of plant miRNAs in animals remain poorly understood and somewhat. Herein, we found that plant MIR156 regulates proliferation of intestinal cells both in vitro and in vivo. Continuous administration of a high plant miRNA diet or synthetic MIR156 elevated MIR156 levels and inhibited the Wnt/β-catenin signaling path

Plants' metabolites as potential antiobesity agents.

Obesity and obesity-related complications are on the increase both in the developed and developing world. Since existing pharmaceuticals fail to come up with long-term solutions to address this issue, there is an ever-pressing need to find and develop new drugs and alternatives. Natural products, particularly medicinal plants, are believed to harbor potential antiobesity agents that can act through various mechanisms either by preventing weight gain or promoting weight loss amongst others. The inhibition of key lipid and carbohydrate hydrolyzing and metabolizing enzymes, disruption of adipogen

Targeting Collagens and LOX Through Plant-Derived MicroRNAs (XenomiRs).

Collagens and Lysyl Oxidases shape the extracellular matrix, with their dysregulation promoting matrix stiffness and pathological conditions. Plant-derived microRNAs (xenomiRs) can act across species, potentially modulating human physiology. Here, we present a robust protocol for isolating and sequencing xenomiRs from plants of the Evia region of Greece and predicting their human targets, highlighting their potential to regulate collagens and lysyl oxidases and providing a framework for cross-kingdom therapeutic approaches.

Nicotiana benthamiana as a model for studying Cryptococcus-plant interaction.

Cryptococcus gattii, an environmental yeast isolated from plants, is one of the agents of cryptococcosis. Here, we aimed to develop a plant model to study C. gattii-plant interaction, since it is unclear how it affects the plant and the yeast. We tested three inoculation methods (scarification, infiltration, and abrasion) in three plant species: Arabidopsis thaliana, Nicotiana tabacum, and N. benthamiana. Cryptococcus gattii was able to grow in all three models, with a peak of yeast cell burden after 7 days, without any pathological effects. Furthermore, the fungal burden was reduced later, co

Chronic synovitis caused by a date palm thorn: An unusual clinical picture.

Synovitis related to plant thorns is a rare pathology. As in this case, thorn prick injury, which is particularly caused by thin palm thorns, is frequently missed in clinical history. Clinical presentation of cases may simulate juvenile rheumatoid arthritis with monoarticular involvement and septic arthritis. Removal of all thorns with partial or total synovectomy is essential in definitive treatment. Arthroscopy is the most valuable method of meeting both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes as it provides the best visibility of the joint with lower morbidity.

Medial fracture dislocation of hallucal interphalangeal joint. A case report.

A case of medical fracture dislocation of the hallucal interphalangeal joint is presented. The patient did not recall the specific mechanism that caused this injury. However, this type of injury would have to entail a substantial lateral-to-medial force at the distal phalanx. The authors' review of the literature did not reveal a similar case involving a medial dislocation of the distal phalanx. This transverse plane pathology was treated with closed reduction because of a lack of sesamoid or volar plant involvement in the joint.

Experimentally induced photosensitization in cattle with Cooperia pedunculata.

Photosensitization was induced in 2 Charolais heifers following administration of a mixture of air-dried, ground, green (75%) and dead (25%) leaves of the south Texas forb, Cooperia pedunculata, and subsequent exposure to sunlight. Plant material used in this study was collected from a pasture where natural cases of primary bovine photosensitization were occurring. Signs of photosensitization were observed in one heifer after 2 doses of plant material--10 g/kg on day 1 and 5 g/kg on day 2. Continued administration of plant material at 5 g/kg/d on days 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 resulted in severe signs

Highly Selective and Sensitive Detection of Biogenic Defense Phytohormone Salicylic Acid in Living Cells and Plants Using a Novel and Viable Rhodamine-Functionalized Fluorescent Probe.

Detecting plant-derived signal molecules using fluorescent probes is a key topic and a huge challenge for scientists. Salicylic acid (SA), a vital plant-derived defense hormone, can activate global transcriptional reprogramming to systemically express a network of prominent pathogenesis-related proteins against invasive microorganisms. This strategy is called systemic acquired resistance (SAR). Therefore, monitoring the dynamic fluctuations of SA in subcellular microenvironments can advance our understanding of different physiological and pathological functions during the SA-induced SAR mechan

Vitamin C deficiency in growing willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus lagopus).

Willow ptarmigan chicks raised on a diet containing 265 mg ascorbic acid/kg develop scury-like symptoms and die by 4 weeks of age. If blueberry plants are given as an ad libitum supplement to this diet, the malady is prevented. We have described the clinical, pathological and histological changes which accompany this malnutrition and conclude that they are in accord with the description of scurvy in guinea pig and man. Biochemical determination of ascorbic acid synthesis in the kidney of ptarmigan chicks indicated a rate of synthesis five times that found in livers of growing white rats. Blueb

[Spiroplasmas and hematophagous arthropods; prospects in tropical pathology].

Spiroplasmas are original wall-free prokaryotes which exhibit motility and a helical shape although lacking any cell wall or motile apparatus. They are known by phytopathologists because some of them are responsible for severe arthropod-borne plant diseases, such as Spiroplasma citri, the etiologic agent of "citrus stubborn disease". Other spiroplasmas are pathogenic for a number of insects: drosophila, bees and beetles. More recently spiroplasmas were also isolated from ticks, mosquitoes, horse-flies and deer-flies opening a new chapter in medical pathology. These agents are of possible great

Disrupted actin: a novel player in pathogen attack sensing?

The actin cytoskeleton is widely involved in plant immune responses. The majority of studies show that chemical disruption of the actin cytoskeleton increases plant susceptibility to pathogen infection. Similarly, several pathogens have adopted this as a virulence strategy and produce effectors that affect cytoskeleton integrity. Such effectors either exhibit actin-depolymerizing activity themselves or prevent actin polymerization. Is it thus possible for plants to recognize the actin's status and launch a counterattack? Recently we showed that chemical depolymerization of actin filaments can

Current Status of Plant-Based Bioactive Compounds as Therapeutics in Alzheimer's Diseases.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common central neurodegenerative disease disorder characterized primarily by cognitive impairment and non-cognitive neuropsychiatric symptoms that significantly impact patients' daily lives and behavioral functioning. The pathogenesis of AD remains unclear and current Western medicines treatment are purely symptomatic, with a singular pathway, limited efficacy, and substantial toxicity and side effects. In recent years, as research into AD has deepened, there has been a gradual increase in the exploration and application of medicinal plants for the treatment of AD

Experimental anorexigenic effect of a membrane proteoglycan isolated from plants.

The cessation of eating under normal physiological conditions is a voluntary act induced by a conscious sensation known as satiety. In pathological situations there is loss of appetite or anorexia. We have been able to isolate and characterize a proteoglycan from membranes of mono- and dicotyledonous plant sprouts which reduced the food intake significantly when injected into murine model systems without any rebound. Due to its membrane origin, it has been termed 'satiomem'. The plant proteoglycan (50 kDa) consisted of 70-85% carbohydrates and 15-30% proteins.

Anti-trypanosomal activity of African medicinal plants: a review update.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: African trypanosomiasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases caused by different species of trypanosomes that affect both human and livestock with devastating consequences in the continent. Most of the affected populations commonly use traditional medicinal plants for the treatment of the disease. Consequently, this prompted ethnopharmacological research activities on the anti-trypanosomal activity of a number of these African medicinal plants in order to validate their ethnomedicinal use. Furthermore, such studies could lead to the identification of chemic

Preclinical and clinical development of plant-made virus-like particle vaccine against avian H5N1 influenza.

UNLABELLED: The recent swine H1N1 influenza outbreak demonstrated that egg-based vaccine manufacturing has an Achille's heel: its inability to provide a large number of doses quickly. Using a novel manufacturing platform based on transient expression of influenza surface glycoproteins in Nicotiana benthamiana, we have recently demonstrated that a candidate Virus-Like Particle (VLP) vaccine can be generated within 3 weeks of release of sequence information. Herein we report that alum-adjuvanted plant-made VLPs containing the hemagglutinin (HA) protein of H5N1 influenza (A/Indonesia/5/05) can in
