Fatal injury in eastern Sri Lanka, with special reference to cardenolide self-poisoning with Cerbera manghas fruits.

OBJECTIVE: Self-poisoning with plant seeds or fruits is a common method of self-harm in South Asia. While most deaths follow ingestion of Thevetia peruviana (yellow oleander) seeds, other plants are locally common. During review of fatal injuries seen in a teaching hospital in eastern Sri Lanka, we noted cases of fatal self-poisoning with Cerbera manghas (sea mango, pink eyed cerbera, odollam tree) fruits. METHODS: We reviewed the post-mortem records of the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital and extracted data on all cases of fatal injury. RESULTS: During 2001 and 2002, 315 post mortems for injury

Primary photosensitization caused by Chamaecristas serpens var. serpens in horses, donkeys, cattle, and goats.

This paper reports an outbreak of Chamaecrista serpens var. serpens poisoning in Mangalarga Marchador horses, Pega donkeys, Nelore cattle, and Mambrina goats. The disease occurred in the municipality of Iaçu, in the semi-arid region of the state of Bahia, 15-30 days after the start of the rainy season, coinciding with the regrowth of the plant. The prevalence of the poisoning was 100% in donkeys and horses, 11.9% in cattle, and 38.8% in goats. Clinical signs were characterized by itching, edema, and crust formation, predominantly in areas of non-pigmented skin or with less hair coverage and in

Hemlock water dropwort poisoning--a review.

Hemlock water dropwort (Oenanthe crocata) is probably the most poisonous plant in the British Isles. The roots are the most toxic part of the plant and have been eaten in mistake for the roots of several other plant species with often fatal results. A recent nonfatal case of poisoning is reported and previous cases reviewed. Present evidence suggests that barbiturates, particularly short-acting agents are life saving and are the drugs of choice in the treatment of the convulsions.

What kind of poison was used in "The Name of the Rose"?

In the novel "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, a fanatical monk laced the pages of a book with a poison, which led to the death of several monks in a medieval monastery. Based on modern toxicological knowledge, an attempt can be made to determine whether there exists a substance meeting the criteria of the poison described in the novel. To this end, toxicological literature on the lethal doses of plant-derived poisons and their duration of action was reviewed. Cowbane (Cicuta virosa), a plant used for preparing poisonous potions, contains cicutoxin which kills at a dose of 500 mg. Similar

Plant contents of magnesium, calcium and potassium in relation to ruminant nutrition.

Grass tetany and wheat pasture poisoning are metabolic diseases of mature, lactating beef cattle. In some other countries, similar problems occur with dairy cattle. In grass tetany, the animals generally are grazing cool-season forages in which Mg concentration or bioavailability of plant Mg is low. Levels of Mg in the blood serum also generally are low. Grass tetany can occur in beef cattle fed hay made from grass, small grains or alfalfa Medicago sativa L.). In wheat pasture poisoning where animals are grazing small grains forages, blood levels of Ca often are low, and blood Mg also may be l

Field observations of Ateleia glazioviana poisoning in cattle in Southern Brazil.

Ateleia glazioviana is an important poisonous plant from southern Brazil. Heavy losses in cattle from this region occur each year due to ingestion of the plant. The epidemiological, clinical, gross and histopathological features of A. glazioviana poisoning in cattle are described here from a 5-year field survey in southern Brazil. A. glazioviana poisoning in cattle induces 3 clinical presentations: abortions, disease characterized by lethargy, and cardiac failure. The latter is associated with marked necrosis and fibrosis of the myocardium and can cause sudden death or congestive heart failure

Poisoning of mice by Baccharis coridifolia: an experimental model.

The poisonous plant Baccharis coridifolia causes necrosis in lymphoid tissues and the gastrointestinal tract of cattle, horses, sheep and rabbits. An experimental poisoning of mice was undertaken to establish an experimental model in a laboratory animal specie. A single 5 to 8-g/kg dose of a suspension of the plant was administered by gavage to 11 mice. To 3 other control mice, the same volume of water was administered. Plant-dosed mice manifested clinical effects after 12 h: tachipnea, trembles, dehydration and prostration. Most of the dosed mice died 14 to 33 h after plant administration--3

Spontaneous poisoning by Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) in a sheep herd in southeastern Brazil.

Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) is considered the most important toxic plant affecting livestock farming in Brazil. This study describes an outbreak of spontaneous poisoning by P. marcgravii in sheep. Forty-nine sheep died while showing clinical signs of sudden death after having access to the plant. During the necropsy, P. marcgravii leaves were observed in the rumens of the animals. Histopathological analysis demonstrated hydropic degeneration of the kidneys. Monofluoracetate concentration obtained in Palicourea samples was 0.53% (5.3 μg/mg). These findings collectively indicate that the a

A review of acute poisoning from Atractylis gummifera L.

Atractylis gummifera is a poisonous plant widely found in North Africa. The thistle grows commonly in dry areas, and the juice of the rhizome is poisonous. It provokes frequent poisoning, especially of children. Toxic glucosides have been isolated and their identified as atractyloside and carboxyatractyloside. Tissues of high metabolic activity are the main target organs. Atractylis gummifera glucosides cause a severe hepatitis with fatal liver failure common. The plant's poisonous compounds interact with detoxication and/or transformation systems in the liver even at doses not likely to induc

Toxic Plants and Their Impact on Livestock Health and Economic Losses: A Comprehensive Review.

Plants are important components in sustaining the life of humans and animals, balancing ecosystems, providing animal feed and edible food for human consumption, and serving as sources of traditional and modern medicine. However, plants can be harmful to both animals and humans when ingested, leading to poisoning regardless of the quantity consumed. This presents significant risks to livestock health and can impede economic growth. In several developing countries, including Ethiopia, traditional communities have depended on medicinal plants for treating livestock and human diseases. The inciden

Acute poisoning of friesian heifers by Solanum macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum.

Solanum macrocarpon (African eggplant) is a tropical plant widely cultivated as a delicious vegetable; the non-edible wild variety called Solanum macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum (the wild African eggplant) bears thorns or spikes on the stem and leaves. Thirteen yearling heifers on a dairy farm in Uganda suffered acute poisoning after eating berries of S. macrocarpon L. ssp dasyphyllum. There was sudden onset of anorexia, copious salivation, severe dysentery and passage of red urine. The animals also had central nervous derangement (incordination, walking blindly) and exudative dermatitis. Four

Human Poisoning due to Delphinium Species in the Himalayan Region of Nepal: A Case Report.

The Delphinium species herb, common name 'Nirmasi' in Nepal, is one of the community level flower herbs used as medicinal ingredients in various clinical problems in Manang District and other Himalayan parts of Nepal. Roots of the plants from the genus Delphinium have been used for a long time for headache, epilepsy, mania, paralysis, rheumatism, toothache, and various types of pain. However, many species of Delphinium are poisonous and look quite similar in morphology to the beneficial ones. As a result, accidental poisoning is common. Poisoning due to these plants results in symptoms due to

Dehydropyrrolizidine Alkaloid Toxicity, Cytotoxicity, and Carcinogenicity.

Dehydropyrrolizidine alkaloid (DHPA)-producing plants have a worldwide distribution amongst flowering plants and commonly cause poisoning of livestock, wildlife, and humans. Previous work has produced considerable understanding of DHPA metabolism, toxicity, species susceptibility, conditions, and routes of exposure, and pathogenesis of acute poisoning. Intoxication is generally caused by contaminated grains, feed, flour, and breads that result in acute, high-dose, short-duration poisoning. Acute poisoning produces hepatic necrosis that is usually confirmed histologically, epidemiologically, an

Disorders of neuromuscular transmission due to natural environmental toxins.

A variety of natural toxins of animal, plant, and bacterial origin are capable of causing disorders of neuromuscular transmission. Animal toxins include venomous snakes and arthropods, venoms of certain marine creatures, skin secretions of dart-poison frogs, and poisonous fish, shellfish, and crabs. There are plant poisons such as curare, and bacterial poisons such as botulinum toxin. These act at single or multiple sites of the neuromuscular apparatus interfering with voltage-gated ion channels, acetylcholine release, depolarization of the postsynaptic membrane, or generation and spread of th

Black-spot poison ivy dermatitis. An acute irritant contact dermatitis superimposed upon an allergic contact dermatitis.

A black spot in the epidermis over a blister of poison ivy dermatitis is an uncommon finding. Four patients with the phenomenon are described. Histologic and histochemical studies were made on biopsy material and the blackish deposit on the skin surface was compared with black deposits in and on leaves of the species of poison ivy. This examination revealed a yellow, amorphous substance on the stratum corneum of the lesions and a similar substance in and on leaves of the poison ivy plant, Toxicodendron radicans ssp. negundo. Associated with the pigmentary deposits there were distinct changes o
