Preparation of PANI-SA/CF anode to enhance the remediation and power generation capabilities of plant microbial fuel cells for chromium contaminated soil.

Plant microbial fuel cells (PMFCs) has important value for soil remediation and power generation. To improve the performance of PMFCs, a PMFC experimental system was established based on potted scindapsus aureus. Polyaniline (PANI) and sodium alginate (SA) were used as modifiers to prepare PANI-SA modified carbon felt anode. The soil remediation ability and electricity generation ability of PMFCs with four different anodes were compared and analyzed. The experimental results show that the steady-state voltage, the removal rate of hexavalent chromium, and the total chromium removal rate of PMFC

Green protocol for the preparation of hydrophilic molecularly imprinted resin in water for the efficient selective extraction and determination of plant hormones from bean sprouts.

In this study, a novel and green synthesis of a new hydrophilic molecularly imprinted 3-aminophenol-hexamethylenetetramine (MIAPH) resin for the selective recognition and separation of plant hormones was developed. The MIAPH resin was obtained using 3-aminophenol as multifunctional monomer which introduced hydroxyl, amino, and imino groups simultaneously, and adenine was used as a dummy template for molecular imprinting. Meanwhile, hexamethylenetetramine released formaldehyde slowly through hydrolysis which was used as the cross-linking agent to avoid the direct and excessive use of toxic form

Safety Evaluation of Soy Leghemoglobin Protein Preparation Derived From Pichia pastoris, Intended for Use as a Flavor Catalyst in Plant-Based Meat.

The leghemoglobin protein (LegH) from soy ( Glycine max) expressed in Pichia pastoris (LegH preparation, LegH Prep) imparts a meat-like flavor profile onto plant-based food products. The safety of LegH Prep was evaluated through a series of in vitro and in vivo tests. The genotoxic potential of LegH Prep was assessed using the bacterial reverse mutation assay (Ames test) and the in vitro chromosome aberration test. LegH Prep was nonmutagenic and nonclastogenic in each test, respectively. Systemic toxicity was assessed in a 28-day dietary study in male and female Sprague Dawley rats. There were

Preparative isolation and purification of rupestonic acid from the Chinese medicinal plant Artemisia rupestris L. by high-speed counter-current chromatography.

Rupestonic acid was purified for the first time by high-speed counter-current chromatography from a dichloromethane extract of the traditional Chinese medicinal plant Artemisia rupestris L. The separation was performed in two steps with a two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (6:4:3.5:6.5, v/v) with 0.5% acetic acid in stationary-phase. From 200 mg of the crude extract, 27.9 mg of rupestonic acid was obtained at over 98% purity as determined by HPLC analysis, and its chemical structure was confirmed by MS, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance.

Fat metabolism in higher plants. Production of short- and medium-chain acyl-acyl carrier protein by spinach stroma preparations treated with cerulenin.

Incubation of stroma preparations from spinach chloroplasts with low concentrations of cerulenin (10 muM) resulted in severe inhibition of fatty acid synthesis but stimulated the release of medium-chain acids in very high proportions (60-70%). Preincubation of these preparations with cerulenin in the absence of substrate exerted no additional effect on subsequent fatty acid synthesis (as measured by incorporation of [14C]acetate into fatty acids) or the pattern of radioactive acids obtained. Acyl-protein, acyl-CoA, free fatty acids and lipids were resolved from each other and analysed for thei

Chemical bonding of cross-linked glutaraldehyde/chitosan on the surface of a titanium wire to prepare a robust biocompatible SPME fiber for analysis of phytohormones in plants.

A robust biocompatible solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber, so-called Ti/APTS/GA/CS, was prepared by chemical bonding of cross-linked glutaraldehyde-chitosan to the surface of a titanium wire using APTS. The fiber was applied for sampling of phytohormones in plant tissues, followed by HPLC-UV analysis. The structure and morphology of the fiber coating was investigated by FT-IR, SEM, EDX, XRD, and TGA techniques. A Box-Behnken design was implemented to optimize the experimental variables. The calibration graphs were linear over a wide linear range (0.5-200 μg L-1) with LODs over the range

Construction of a Delivery Platform for Vaccine Based on Modified Nanotubes: Sustainable Prevention against Plant Viral Disease, Simplified Preparation Method, and Protection of Plasmid.

Control of plant viral diseases through cross-protection conferred by an attenuated vaccine is an important strategy for plant protection. However, the mutated site of an attenuated vaccine may not be stably inherited, while viruses have evolved efficient repair mechanisms for the maintenance of genomic integrity. Here, the wide host range and broad selection of mutation sites in cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) enabled construction of an attenuated vaccine through insertional mutation of the CMV 2b protein. CMV-R2E was stably inherited in tobacco for more than 10 generations and had a high relativ

Preparation of cyclodextrin functionalized magnetic microporous organic network for efficient application in magnetic solid phase extraction of four typical mycotoxins in medicinal and edible plants.

Mycotoxin contamination in medicinal and edible plants threatens food safety and public health, and developing effective adsorbents for their enrichment and detection is essential. A novel magnetic cyclodextrin-functionalised microporous organic network (MON), TEPA-Fe3O4@α-CD-MON, was synthesized via an in situ growth strategy. The adsorbent efficiently enriched trace levels of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), aflatoxin B2 (AFB2), zearalenone (ZEN) and ochratoxin A (OTA), simultaneously. Experimental results combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the adsorbent exhibited

Activated Bio-Carbons Prepared from the Residue of Supercritical Extraction of Raw Plants and Their Application for Removal of Nitrogen Dioxide and Hydrogen Sulfide from the Gas Phase.

The waste materials left after supercritical extraction of hop cones and marigold flowers were tested as precursors of activated bio-carbons. Adsorbents were produced by means of the physical (also called thermal) activation method using CO2 as the gasifying agent. All the activated bio-carbons were tested for the removal of NO2 and H2S from the gas phase under dry and wet conditions. The effects of the type of precursor and the activation procedure on the porous structure development, the acid-base properties of the surface, as well as the sorption capacities of the materials produced were al

Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) Essential Oils Prepared at Different Plant Phenophases on Pseudomonas aeruginosa LPS-Activated THP-1 Macrophages.

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) essential oil (TEO) is widely used as an alternative therapy especially for infections of the upper respiratory tract. TEO possesses antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. The emerging antibiotic resistance of bacterial strains, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, has prompted the urge to find alternative treatments. In the present study, we examined the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of thymol, the main compound of TEO, and two TEOs prepared at the beginning and at the end of the flowering period that may make these oils promising candidates a

Common risks of adulterated and mislabeled herbal preparations.

Due to the growing trend of returning to nature and the fear of adverse reactions from conventional medicines, people are increasingly resorting to the use of herbal preparations. Because of long-term use and natural origin these preparations give a sense of security. But herbal formulations also possess undesirable effects and, among other dangers, present a risk connected with deliberate addition of synthetic compounds, deliberate or unintentional replacement of the plant species or simply a risk of mislabeling. While the replacement of the plant species occurs in a very different groups of

Microscopic artifact found during examination of the skin: plant hair of Viburnum dentatum.

Examination of skin specimens with microscopic techniques requires differentiation of pathogenic structures from artifact. While preparing potassium hydroxide preparations for fungal identification or immersion oil preparations for scabies identification, we have recently seen several examples of a bizarre stellate or cruciform plant structure. These artifactual particles were identified as plant hairs from Viburnum dentatum, or arrowwood. Clinicians and laboratory technicians should be aware of this artifact in order to interpret microscopic skin specimens appropriately.

Plant Part-Specific Differences in Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): A Comparative Evaluation of Root and Leaf Evidence for Safety and Regulation.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a key herbal product traditionally used as a root-based rejuvenative. Leaf and whole-plant preparations have also become increasingly available, for which dedicated safety characterization remains limited. European risk assessments and the Danish ban have raised safety concerns for "ashwagandha" without consistently distinguishing plant parts. We conducted a structured narrative review with a regulatory focus, integrating traditional sources, phytochemical and pharmacologic studies, human clinical trials, pharmacovigilance data, quality/adulteration investig

Plant-Derived Polynucleotides/Polydeoxyribonucleotides in Skin Biomaterials: Delivery Platforms and Bioactivity Attribution.

In the fields of dermatology and skin biomaterials, polynucleotides (PN) and polydeoxyribonucleotides (PDRN) typically refer to deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)-based polymers or heterogeneous DNA-fragment mixtures rather than ribonucleic acid (RNA) polynucleotides. Recently, plant-derived PN/PDRN preparations, sourced from callus, adventitious roots, and plant cell culture systems, have emerged as a promising animal-free material class. However, current evidence remains predominantly preclinical and should not be construed as demonstrating clinical equivalence to conventional animal-derived PDRN.
