Belowground carbon use in woody plants under experimental warming: uneven evidence for fine-root, root-exudation, and mycorrhizal responses.

How warming changes belowground carbon use in woody plants remains poorly understood. Most experiments measure fine-root, root-exudation, and mycorrhizal responses separately, providing limited evidence on how these responses vary together within the same experiment. We synthesized 13 primary publications from 11 independent experiments: eight field, one outdoor pot, and two controlled experiments. Our synthesis showed no significant increase in fine-root biomass or production. Root respiration, mortality, and N concentration increased, whereas root P and non-structural carbohydrate concentrat

Drought and root herbivory interact to alter the response of above-ground parasitoids to aphid infested plants and associated plant volatile signals.

Multitrophic interactions are likely to be altered by climate change but there is little empirical evidence relating the responses of herbivores and parasitoids to abiotic factors. Here we investigated the effects of drought on an above/below-ground system comprising a generalist and a specialist aphid species (foliar herbivores), their parasitoids, and a dipteran species (root herbivore). We tested the hypotheses that: (1) high levels of drought stress and below-ground herbivory interact to reduce the performance of parasitoids developing in aphids; (2) drought stress and root herbivory change

Coordinated whole-plant responses involving tension wood formation in the hypocotyl base and directional reorientation of adventitious roots contributes to plant axis straightening in directionally displaced Avicennia marina (Forssk.) Vierh. seedlings.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Mangrove seedlings establish in highly dynamic intertidal environments characterized by tidal inundation, salinity and unstable substrate, where early anchorage and upright orientation are critical for survival and light perception for growth. In crypto-viviparous mangrove Avicennia marina, the functional role of the hypocotyl during post-dispersal establishment remains poorly understood. This study examines the importance of the hypocotyl and the largest diameter adventitious root R1 in contributing to seedling uprightness. METHODS: A. marina seedlings were grown under c

Passive samplers provide a better prediction of PAH bioaccumulation in earthworms and plant roots than exhaustive, mild solvent, and cyclodextrin extractions.

A number of extraction methods have been developed to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) bioavailability in soils. As these methods are rarely tested in a comparative manner, against different test organisms, and using field-contaminated soils, it is unclear which method gives the most accurate measure of the actual soil ecosystem exposure. In this study, PAH bioavailability was assessed in ten field-contaminated soils by using exhaustive acetone/hexane extractions, mild solvent (butanol) extractions, cyclodextrin extractions, and two passive sampling methods; solid phase micro extra

Potato root-associated microbiomes adapt to combined water and nutrient limitation and have a plant genotype-specific role for plant stress mitigation.

BACKGROUND: Due to climate change and reduced use of fertilizers combined stress scenarios are becoming increasingly frequent in crop production. In a field experiment we tested the effect of combined water and phosphorus limitation on the growth performance and plant traits of eight tetraploid and two diploid potato varieties as well as on root-associated microbiome diversity and functional potential. Microbiome and metagenome analysis targeted the diversity and potential functions of prokaryotes, fungi, plasmids, and bacteriophages and was linked to plant traits like tuber yield or timing of

Orchard management alters citrus root and rhizosphere microbiomes with functional consequences for plant performance.

Agricultural management practices act as ecological disturbances that can restructure soil and plant-associated microbial communities, but the functional consequences of these microbial shifts on crop performance remain poorly understood. Here, we examined how common orchard inputs, including wood mulch, glyphosate, and humic acid, affect citrus root and rhizosphere microbiomes, leaf nutrient trajectories, and tree performance over a 3-year field experiment. Mulch emerged as the dominant driver of fungal community composition and taxonomic turnover, enriching for saprophytic fungi. Conversely,

Acetylsalicylic Acid at Trace Concentrations Induces Cellular Toxicity and Phytotoxicity in the Roots of Cultivated Plants.

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is frequently detected in wastewater and sewage sludge, which may represent potential pathways of entry into agricultural environments. However, its effects on cultivated plants at trace concentrations remain unexplored. This study evaluated the effects of ASA (1-1000 ng·L-1) on germination and root growth of Daucus carota, Solanum lycopersicum, and Cucumis sativus, as well as cytotoxic and genotoxic effects in the root meristems of Allium cepa bulbs and biochemical responses associated with redox homeostasis in the roots of all four species. No significant adverse e

Copper acquisition is essential for plant colonization and virulence in a root-infecting vascular wilt fungus.

Plant pathogenic fungi provoke devastating agricultural losses and are difficult to control. How these organisms acquire micronutrients during growth in the host environment remains poorly understood. Here we show that efficient regulation of copper acquisition mechanisms is crucial for plant colonization and virulence in the soilborne ascomycete Fusarium oxysporum, the causal agent of vascular wilt disease in more than 150 different crops. Using a combination of RNA-seq and ChIP-seq, we establish a direct role of the transcriptional regulator Mac1 in activation of copper deficiency response g

Magnetite nanoparticle coating chemistry regulates root uptake pathways and iron chlorosis in plants.

Understanding the fundamental interaction of nanoparticles at plant interfaces is critical for reaching field-scale applications of nanotechnology-enabled plant agriculture, as the processes between nanoparticles and root interfaces such as root compartments and root exudates remain largely unclear. Here, using iron deficiency-induced plant chlorosis as an indicator phenotype, we evaluated the iron transport capacity of Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with citrate (CA) or polyacrylic acid (PAA) in the plant rhizosphere. Both nanoparticles can be used as a regulator of plant hormones to promote root

Iron Oxide and Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticle Effects on Plant Performance and Root Associated Microbes.

In this study, we investigated the effect of positively and negatively charged Fe₃O₄ and TiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) on the growth of soybean plants (Glycine max.) and their root associated soil microbes. Soybean plants were grown in a greenhouse for six weeks after application of different amounts of NPs, and plant growth and nutrient content were examined. Roots were analyzed for colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and nodule-forming nitrogen fixing bacteria using DNA-based techniques. We found that plant growth was significantly lower with the application of TiO₂ as compared to F

The Power of Omics to Identify Plant Susceptibility Factors and to Study Resistance to Root-knot Nematodes.

Technology has contributed to the advances on the genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and proteomic analyses of the plant-root-knot nematode (RKN) interaction. Holistic approaches to obtain expression profiles, such as cDNA libraries, differential display, q-PCR, microarray hybridization, massive sequencing, etc., have increased our knowledge on the molecular aspects of the interaction and have triggered the development of biotechnological tools to control this plague. An important limitation, however, has been the difficulty of cross-comparative analysis of these data. The construction of a

Constitutive salicylic acid accumulation in pi4kIIIβ1β2 Arabidopsis plants stunts rosette but not root growth.

Phospholipids have recently been found to be integral elements of hormone signalling pathways. An Arabidopsis thaliana double mutant in two type III phosphatidylinositol-4-kinases (PI4Ks), pi4kIIIβ1β2, displays a stunted rosette growth. The causal link between PI4K activity and growth is unknown. Using microarray analysis, quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and multiple phytohormone analysis by LC-MS we investigated the mechanism responsible for the pi4kIIIβ1β2 phenotype. The pi4kIIIβ1β2 mutant accumulated a high concentration of salicylic acid (SA), constit

First observation of diffusion-limited plant root phosphorus uptake from nutrient solution.

Diffusion towards the root surface has recently been shown to control the uptake of metal ions from solutions. The uptake flux of phosphorus (P) from solutions often approaches the maximal diffusion flux at low external concentrations, suggesting diffusion-controlled uptake also for P. Potential diffusion limitation in P uptake from nutrient solutions was investigated by measuring P uptake of Brassica napus from solutions using P-loaded Al(2) O(3) nanoparticles as mobile P buffer. At constant, low free phosphate concentration, plant P uptake increased up to eightfold and that of passive, diffu

Influence of root morphology and salinity on PFAS uptake by ten Australian wetland plant species.

Constructed Floating Wetlands (CFWs) show promise as nature-based technology for attenuating per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in surface water. However, few studies have investigated plant morphological and physiological characteristics that promote PFAS uptake. This study assessed ten wetland plant species exposed to PFAS-spiked stormwater (PFBS, PFPeA, PFHxS, PFOA, PFOS, 30 µg/L each), for 28 days, under two salinity conditions (200 and 1000 mg/L). At low salinity, all species accumulated PFAS, with variation according to species. T. triandra, P. labillardieri, and S. validus were

Root barriers to radial O2 loss restrict CH4 entry and plant-mediated emissions.

Rice cultivation is a major source of methane (CH4), with most emissions occurring via plant-mediated diffusion through roots and shoots, and root aerenchyma is widely assumed to facilitate CH4 diffusion from soil to atmosphere. However, the root traits governing radial gas exchange remain poorly resolved, limiting our understanding of plant-mediated emissions. We tested the hypothesis that the barrier to radial O2 loss (ROL) also restricts plant-mediated CH4 emissions using a synthetic experimental approach to isolate plant trait controls from confounding soil microbial processes. Sixteen ric

Melatonin activates plant defense against root-knot nematodes through the jasmonate pathway.

Root-knot nematodes are obligate plant parasites that can infect a broad spectrum of hosts, including both monocotyledons and dicotyledons. Among strategies to control plant-parasitic nematodes, plant defense elicitors present a viable and environmentally friendly management approach. Melatonin is a signaling molecule that contributes to physiological processes, helping plants respond to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, its role in plant defense against parasitic nematodes has not yet been investigated. The expression of melatonin biosynthesis genes in galls formed upon nematode infection

Wireworms (Coleoptera: Elateridae) Use Root Volatiles and CO2 to Discriminate Among Host Plants.

In the absence of visual signals, subterranean arthropods rely on olfactory and tactile cues to navigate toward resources. Here, in a series of pairwise dual-choice bioassays, we investigated the Limonius californicus (Col., Elateridae) larva response to wheat, pea, and bean seedlings in sand-filled olfactometers. We then quantified volatile organic compounds (VOC) emitted from roots. Wireworm preference for beans compared to wheat was attributed to the higher CO2 emission. Wireworm preference for peas compared to wheat was attributed to the higher amounts (µg/hr) of hexanal emitted from pea r

Responses in Plant Growth and Root Exudates of Pistia stratiotes under Zn and Cu Stress.

At present, the situation regarding heavy metal pollution in aquatic environments is becoming more and more serious. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in aquatic plants causes obvious phytotoxicity, which can also induce secondary pollution in the aquatic environment. Zinc and copper, as indispensable elements for plant growth, are also prominent heavy metals in water pollution in China, and their concentrations play a crucial role in plant growth. In this study, we investigated the response of Pistia stratiotes (P. stratiotes) to different concentrations of Zn and Cu, and the results showed
