Abiotic elicitation with heavy metals has demonstrated considerable potential to stimulate the production of industrially important secondary metabolites in plant in vitro cultures. The present study investigates the effect of exogenous silver nitrate and cadmium chloride supplementation on flavonoid and phenolic acid production, as well as other indicators of oxidative stress, in shoot cultures of Dracocephalum ruyschiana L. Owing to the presence of bioactive polyphenolic compounds, this Mongolian medicinal plant is traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antipyretic age

Ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) conversely alter pH of the rooting medium, and thus differentially affect the equilibrium between boric acid and borate in soil solution. This can alter boron (B) uptake by plants, which is passive under high, but facilitated (boric acid) or active (borate) under low B supply. Therefore, the effect of NH4+ and NO3- forms was investigated on the growth, 10B uptake rate and accumulation, and expression of B transporters in Brassica napus grown with low (1 μM) or high (100 μM) 10B for five days in the nutrient solution. At the low 10B level, NO3--fed plants had

The Stylosanthes hamata SHST1 gene encodes a high-affinity sulfate transporter located in the plasma membrane. In this study the S. hamata SHST1 gene was constitutively expressed in Indian mustard [Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.] to investigate its importance for tolerance and accumulation of various oxyanions that may be transported by SHST1 and for cadmium, which is detoxified by sulfur-rich compounds. The transgenic SHST1 lines SHST1-12C and SHST1-4C were compared with wild-type Indian mustard for tolerance and accumulation of arsenate, chromate, tungstate, vanadate, and cadmium. As seedlings

Understanding the effects of root Fe deficiency on the uptake and translocation of toxic metals can be important for improving the phytoremediation strategies of polluted soils. The present study investigated how Fe nutritional status affects the uptake and root-to-shoot-translocation of Pb in hydroponically grown seedlings of (Mill.) Swingle. The interactions of Fe deficiency and Pb were assessed by measuring the root Fe(III) reductase activity, carboxylic acids concentration in root exudates, root and shoot biomass, and accumulation of Pb and other metals (Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu) in roots and le

Philodendron 'White Knight' is a popular climbing evergreen plant typically propagated through stem cuttings. However, this method is slow and inefficient, making it challenging to meet the rising market demand. In vitro propagation could enhance the multiplication of this cultivar. However, research on its in vitro propagation is limited. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to establish an efficient micropropagation technique to mass-produce Philodendron 'White Knight' to meet the market demand. We investigate the impact of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) on the surface sterilizat

The accumulation of plastics and heavy metals (HMs) in the environment has become a significant global concern due to their persistence, ubiquity, and potential ecological impacts. Atmospheric micro- and nanoplastics (MP, NP) are capable of undergoing long-range transport and can be deposited onto plant shoots through precipitation, thereby exposing aerial plant tissues to these particulate contaminants. In this study, the effects of varying concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics (PSNPs) (0, 10, 50, 100, 200, and 400 mg L-1), applied via foliar spraying, and cadmium (Cd) (0 and 5 mg L-1) w

Soil pollution with Cd has promoted serious concerns for medicinal plant quality. Amending Cd-polluted soils with textile waste biochar (TWB) coated with natural polymers can lower Cd bioavailability in them and reduce associated environmental and human health risks. In this study, we explored the impacts of solely applied TWB, chitosan (CH), their mix (TWB + CH) and TWB coated with CH (TBC) in Cd-polluted soil on Cd distribution in moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) shoots and roots as well as plant-available Cd in soil. Moreover, amendments effects on plant growth, dietary quality, and antioxidat

Cadmium (Cd) stress causes serious damage to plants, inducing various physiological and biochemical disruptions that lead to reduced plant biomass and compromised growth. The study investigated the combined effects of silicon (Si) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on mitigating Cd stress in plants, revealing promising results in enhancing plant tolerance to Cd toxicity. Under Cd stress, plant biomass was significantly reduced (-33% and -30% shoot and root dry weights) as compared to control. However, Si and AMF application ameliorated this effect, leading to increased shoot and root dry w

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been known to enhance plant growth and nutrient uptake. In this study, we investigated the effects of Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizophagus intraradices, and their co-inoculation on the growth and biochemical composition of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants. The findings demonstrated that the inoculation of AMF significantly enhanced shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight, number of fruits per plant, as well as concentrations of anthocyanin, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants in tomato plants. Both individual and co-inoculation of AMF also

The purpose of the study was to examine biochar amendment, phosphorus (P) fertilizer and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on the yield, nutrient and cadmium (Cd) absorption of Lolium multiflorum in acidic soil. It was shown that mycorrhizal inoculation had no positive influence on the plant shoot biomass and the contents of nitrogen (N), P, potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) in plants at all biochar and P level treatments. Irrespective of mycorrhizal inoculation and P level, biochar amendments markedly elevated the soil available P and K uptake in plant tissues. In contrast, bioc

Cryopreservation is a promising method for the long-term preservation of plant germplasm, especially for vegetatively propagated species like freesias. In this study, we investigate streamlining the cryopreservation process for 'Sunny Gold' Freesia, starting from effective in vitro initiation and proliferation using various plant growth regulator combinations. We also assess the impact of subculture on regrowth rates after cryopreservation. The shoot tips were successfully initiated in vitro after sterilization. The shoots were multiplied an average of three times in media containing N6-benzyl

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are known to have beneficial effects on host plants growing on contaminated soils. The present study aimed at investigating the influence of two different AM fungi (Rhizophagus intraradices and Funneliformis mosseae) on the growth of plants and Cu uptake by Mimosa pudica L. grown in polluted soils containing various levels of Cu (Control, 400, 500, or 600 mg kg-l soil) in pot experiments. Mycorrhizal colonisation rates by the two AM fungi decreased markedly with the increasing Cu levels in soils. This inhibition was more pronounced to F. mosseae than R. intrar

The continuous contamination of heavy metals (HMs) in our ecosystem due to industrialization, urbanization and other anthropogenic activities has become a serious environmental constraint to successful crop production. Lead (Pb) toxicity causes ionic, oxidative and osmotic injuries which induce various morphological, physiological, metabolic and molecular abnormalities in plants. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is widely used to elucidate drought stress induction and alleviation mechanisms in treated plants. Some recent studies have unveiled the potential of PEG in regulating plant growth and develo

Thiol-peptides synthesized as intermediates in phytochelatin (PC) biosynthesis confer cellular tolerance to toxic elements like arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, but little is known about their long-distance transport between plant organs. A modified bacterial gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (ECS) gene, S1ptECS, was expressed in the shoots of the ECS-deficient, heavy-metal-sensitive cad2-1 mutant of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). S1ptECS directed strong ECS protein expression in the shoots, but no ECS was detected in the roots of transgenic plant lines. The S1ptECS gene restored full mercu

The rich diversity of microbial endophytic communities associated with plants, often referred to as the second genome, serves as a compelling illustration of efficient co-evolution. This noteworthy partnership plays a pivotal role in sustaining plant well-being and enhancing plant adaptability across diverse habitats. Therefore, examining the diversity of endophytic microbes associated with their particular host plant is valuable for gaining insights into the vast spectrum of plant-microbe interactions. The present experiments aimed at investigating the bacterial endophytic diversity in both r

Plant viruses affect production through symptom induction in host plants. These symptoms could partially arise from nutrient deprivation: The resource competition hypothesis posits that massive viral replication deprives hosts of essential nutrients, yet direct evidence for phosphorus (P) competition is lacking. Moreover, it is reported that biotic stresses can lead to alterations on P metabolism. Using a hydroponic system enabling separate analysis of shoots and roots in adult Arabidopsis thaliana plants, we investigated whether Turnip mosaic virus (TuMV) drawed significant P internal pools l

Soil contamination with toxic heavy metals [such as aluminum (Al)] is becoming a serious global problem due to the rapid development of the social economy. Although plant growth-promoting rhizo-bacteria (PGPR) are the major protectants to alleviate metal toxicity, the study of these bacteria to ameliorate the toxic effects of Al is limited. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the combined effects of different levels of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (5 ppm and 10 ppm) of accession number of MT123456 on plant growth and biomass, photosynthetic pigments, gas exchange attribute
