A century of research on carbon isotope discrimination during photosynthesis: from early breakthroughs to future goals.

Starting with its discovery in 1929, the stable nuclide 13C has been a critical tool for developing our understanding of photosynthesis. Early surveys of carbon isotopes in plants led to questions about whether the isotopic ratio of a given plant is ultimately controlled by an active response to its environment or by the relatively static biochemistry of photosynthesis. This led to a model of the carbon isotope composition of plant tissue meant to describe the integrated effects of physical diffusion, the biochemical action of enzymes, and the physiological response of stomata on net carbon fi

Plant phenotypic adjustments in response to changes in atmospheric pCO2: insights from δ13C values and stomatal index in C3 plant leaves.

The commencement of the Industrial Revolution has resulted in an unprecedented increase in the concentration of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2). It is, therefore, important to understand how plant communities respond to increased levels of CO2 levels in the environment. To this end, we examined the effects of spatial variation in pCO2 on plant physiology using carbon isotope ratios (δ13C values) and stomatal index (SI) in C3 plant leaves along a transect from the central Ganga Plain to the foothills of the Himalayas with industrial and non-industrial zones. Our study shows that the plants adjacent to t

The Effect of Western Corn Rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Water Deficit on Maize Performance Under Controlled Conditions.

The western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, is the most important insect of maize, Zea mays L., but knowledge of its interaction with water deficit on maize production is lacking. A series of greenhouse experiments using three infestation levels of the western corn rootworm, D. virgifera virgifera, under well-watered, moderately dry, and very dry soil moisture levels were conducted to quantify the interaction of western corn rootworm and soil water deficit on B73×Mo17 maize growth and physiology. Three separate experiments were conducted. Soil moisture regimes were initi

Lower responsiveness of canopy evapotranspiration rate than of leaf stomatal conductance to open-air CO2 elevation in rice.

An elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2 ]) can reduce stomatal conductance of leaves for most plant species, including rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, few studies have quantified seasonal changes in the effects of elevated [CO2 ] on canopy evapotranspiration, which integrates the response of stomatal conductance of individual leaves with other responses, such as leaf area expansion, changes in leaf surface temperature, and changes in developmental stages, in field conditions. We conducted a field experiment to measure seasonal changes in stomatal conductance of the uppermost leaves an

Decoupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis in terrestrial plants under elevated temperature: a meta-analysis.

Elevated temperatures pose challenges to stomatal conductance, which regulates transpiration and photosynthesis. However, the coupling of stomatal conductance, transpiration and photosynthesis may shift with warming. Here, we synthesize evidence from a meta-analysis of 207 studies to assess leaf physiological responses to warming. On average, the responses of stomatal conductance are highly variable, exhibiting no consistent directional trend, whereas transpiration increases and photosynthesis decreases, reflecting a shift towards transpirational cooling. Stomatal conductance declines until te

Phosphorus deficiency changes carbon isotope fractionation and triggers exudate reacquisition in tomato plants.

Plant roots are able to exude vast amounts of metabolites into the rhizosphere in response to phosphorus (P) deficiency. Causing noteworthy costs in terms of energy and carbon (C) for the plants. Therefore, it is suggested that exudates reacquisition by roots could represent an energy saving strategy of plants. This study aimed at investigating the effect of P deficiency on the ability of hydroponically grown tomato plants to re-acquire specific compounds generally present in root exudates by using 13C-labelled molecules. Results showed that P deficient tomato plants were able to take up citra

Hydrogen sulfide induced by hydrogen peroxide mediates brassinosteroid-induced stomatal closure of Arabidopsis thaliana.

The role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and its relationship with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in brassinosteroid-induced stomatal closure in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. were investigated. In the present study, 2,4-epibrassinolide (EBR, a bioactive BR) induced stomatal closure in the wild type, the effects were inhibited by H2S scavenger and synthesis inhibitors, and H2O2 scavengers and synthesis inhibitor. However, EBR failed to close the stomata of mutants Atl-cdes, Atd-cdes, AtrbohF and AtrbohD/F. Additionally, EBR induced increase of L-/D-cysteine desulfhydrase (L-/D-CDes) activity, H2S produc

Hydrogen sulphide as a guard cell network regulator.

Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) is an endogenously produced gasotransmitter that has rapidly emerged as an active signalling component of several plant processes, stomatal movement regulation among them. The guard cells (GCs), pairs of cells that neighbour the stomatal pores, transduce endogenous and environmental signals, through signalling network, to control stomatal pore size. In this complex network, which has become a model system for plant signalling, few highly connected components form a core that links most of the pathways. The evidence summarized in this insight, on the interplay between H

Ozone exposure causes a decoupling of conductance and photosynthesis: implications for the Ball-Berry stomatal conductance model.

Industrialization has significantly altered atmospheric chemistry by increasing concentrations of chemicals such as nitrogen oxides (NO( x )) and volatile organic carbon, which react in the presence of sunlight to produce tropospheric ozone (O(3)). Ozone is a powerful oxidant that causes both visual and physiological damage to plants, impairing the ability of the plant to control processes like photosynthesis and transpiration. Damage to photosynthesis and stomatal conductance does not always occur at the same rate, which generates a problem when using the Ball-Berry model to predict stomatal

Shade and Drought Shape Stomatal Kinetics in Beech Saplings.

Stomata and photosynthesis respond at different rates to rapid changes in light availability, resulting in different dynamics of water and carbon fluxes. Here, we investigated how growth conditions, drought, and potassium availability affect the dynamics of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis in response to rapid changes of irradiance in beech saplings (Fagus sylvatica L.). Two greenhouse experiments were conducted, one comparing saplings grown under sunlit conditions to those grown in shaded conditions, and the other testing the effects of edaphic drought and potassium supplementation on

Loss of conductance between mesophyll symplasm and intercellular air spaces explains nonstomatal control of transpiration.

The conventional assumption is that stomatal conductance ([Formula: see text]) dominates the regulation of water and carbon dioxide fluxes between leaves and the atmosphere. Here, a nanoreporter of water status at the mesophyll cell surface and local xylem within intact maize leaves documents significant undersaturation of water vapor in the outside-xylem zone (OXZ) and a large loss of conductance of this zone ([Formula: see text]) at moderate xylem water stress, without stomatal closure or turgor loss. The ratio of the resistances [Formula: see text] serves as a predictive phenotype of unders

A potential overestimation of CO2 physiological effects on evapotranspiration.

It is generally believed that CO2 physiological forcing can partially mitigate land surface drying under global warming by reducing stomatal conductance and evapotranspiration. Most of this type of study focuses on the direct regulation by vegetation physiology, overlooking interactive feedback from the atmosphere. Using fully coupled earth system model simulations, we find that the physiological benefit may have been optimistically overestimated. Vegetation-induced energy change may in turn further affect atmospheric vapor pressure deficit (VPD), exerting extra evapotranspiration demand indir

Atmospheric H2S exposure does not affect stomatal aperture in maize.

Stomatal aperture in maize is not affected by exposure to a subtoxic concentration of atmospheric H2S. At least in maize, H2S, thus, is not a gaseous signal molecule that controls stomatal aperture. Sulfur is an indispensable element for the physiological functioning of plants with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) potentially acting as gasotransmitter in the regulation of stomatal aperture. It is often assumed that H2S is metabolized into cysteine to stimulate stomatal closure. To study the significance of H2S for the regulation of stomatal closure, maize was exposed to a subtoxic atmospheric H2S level

Pseudozyma aphidis Suppresses Microbe-Associated Molecular Pattern (MAMP)-Triggered Callose Deposition and Can Penetrate Leaf Tissue.

Beneficial microorganisms need to overcome the plant defense system to establish on or within plant tissues. Like pathogens, beneficial microbes can manipulate a plant's immunity pathways, first by suppressing and hiding to establish on the host and then by inducing resistance to protect the plant. In the current study, we demonstrated that although Pseudozyma aphidis can activate microbe-associated molecular pattern (MAMP)-associated genes, it does not activate MAMP-triggered callose deposition and can, moreover, suppress such deposition triggered by Flg22 or chitin. While MAMP-associated gen

Spatial and temporal regulation of biosynthesis of the plant immune signal salicylic acid.

The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) is essential for local defense and systemic acquired resistance (SAR). When plants, such as Arabidopsis, are challenged by different pathogens, an increase in SA biosynthesis generally occurs through transcriptional induction of the key synthetic enzyme isochorismate synthase 1 (ICS1). However, the regulatory mechanism for this induction is poorly understood. Using a yeast one-hybrid screen, we identified two transcription factors (TFs), NTM1-like 9 (NTL9) and CCA1 hiking expedition (CHE), as activators of ICS1 during specific immune responses. NTL9 is ess

Histological Features Detected for Separation of the Edible Leaves of Allium ursinum L. from the Poisonous Leaves of Convallaria majalis L. and Colchicum autumnale L.

Allium ursinum (wild garlic) has long been collected and consumed as food and medicine in the north temperate zone, where its popularity is growing. Colchicum autumnale and Convallaria majalis contain toxic alkaloids. Their habitats overlap, and without flowers, their vegetative organs are similar. Confusing the leaves of Colchicum or Convallaria with the leaves of wild garlic has repeatedly led to serious human and animal poisonings. Our goal was to find a histological characteristic that makes the separation of these leaves clear. We compared the anatomy of foliage leaves of these three spec

Leaf Epidermal Micromorphology of the Korean Angelica (Apiaceae) and Its Taxonomic Implications.

The genus Angelica L. (Apiaceae) is mainly distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and comprises approximately 110 species. Although several molecular phylogenetic studies have been conducted on this genus, the leaf micromorphology has not been sufficiently explored. In this study, we examined the leaf micromorphological characteristics of all the 16 Korean Angelica taxa using light and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed considerable variation in the morphology of stomatal complexes, epidermal cells, and trichomes. Leaf epidermal cells were generally irregular in shape,

Stomatal CO2 sensing in plants: control of gas exchange and interactions with environmental stimuli.

Stomatal pores in land plants rapidly and reversibly open and close in response to diurnal changes in leaf carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration. Studies have suggested that CO2 is sensed by guard cells with relevant amplifying contributions from mesophyll tissue. CO2 concentration changes trigger rapid signal transduction events involving protein phosphorylation in guard cells. Moreover, molecular crosstalk and physiological interactions of the stomatal CO2 response with other environmental conditions and stimuli, including light, temperature, drought, and abscisic acid, are reviewed here. Metabolic engineering of stomatal precursor cells enhances photosynthetic water-use efficiency and vegetative growth under water-deficit conditions in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Stomata are epidermal pores that control the exchange of gaseous CO2 and H2O between plants and their environment. Modulating stomatal density can alter this exchange and thus presents a viable target for engineering improved crop productivity and climate resilience. Here, we show that stomatal density in Arabidopsis thaliana can be decreased by the expression of a water-forming NAD(P)H oxidase targeted to stomatal precursor cells. We demonstrate that this reduction in stomatal density occurs irrespective of whether the expressed enzyme is localized to the cytosol, chloroplast stroma or chloro

Physical gills prevent drowning of many wetland insects, spiders and plants.

Insects, spiders and plants risk drowning in their wetland habitats. The slow diffusion of O(2) can cause asphyxiation when underwater, as O(2) supply cannot meet respiratory demands. Some animals and plants have found a common solution to the major challenge: how to breathe underwater with respiratory systems evolved for use in air? Hydrophobic surfaces on their bodies possess gas films that act as a 'physical gill' to collect O(2) when underwater and thus sustain respiration. In aquatic insects, this feature/process has been termed 'plastron respiration'. Here, we demonstrate the similaritie
