Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy: Anabantoidei) as a potential agent for control of weeds, the breeding source for the vectors of Brugia malayi.

The biocontrol efficacy of giant gourami against various aquatic weeds, which form the breeding source of Mansonioides, the vectors of B. malayi, was explored. This fish showed a feeding predilection towards Pistia plant which is the most favoured host of immatures of Mansonioides. A single fish consumed this weed on an average of 206.25 +/- 19.09 g and 316.85 +/- 26.55 g a day under laboratory and field conditions respectively. Techniques developed for the culturing of this fish are also described.

Complementary description of three species of Steneotarsonemus (Acari: Tarsonemidae) from rice agroecosystems of Eastern India with notes on their taxonomic status, spatial distribution, intraspecific variation and species composition.

Rice agroecosystems are inhabited by a number of Steneotarsonemus species worldwide with various host plant relationships and taxonomic identities. To clarify this situation, a large-scale survey was initiated in rice growing belts of eastern India and this revealed the presence of four species of Steneotarsonemus viz. S. furcatus, S. konoi, S. spinki and S. subfurcatus. However, only S. spinki and S. subfurcatus were found infesting rice while the other species were found associated with a number of graminaceous weeds. We found three intraspecific variants within the population of S. spinki w

Bioherbicidal and cytogenotoxic potential of nanoemulsions containing essential oils from Piper amalago and Piper dilatatum.

Essential oils offer a viable alternative to traditional agrochemicals, mitigating problems such as environmental contamination and weed resistance. However, application faces challenges such as low solubility in water and rapid environmental degradation. To overcome these limitations, nanoemulsions containing essential oils from Piper amalago L. and Piper dilatatum Rich were formulated using ultrasonic homogenization. These nanoemulsions were investigated for their herbicidal properties through phytotoxic and cytogenotoxic activity assays using weed plants Bidens pilosa L. and Lolium multiflo

A sustainable strategy for alfalfa establishment: optimized reduced-rate tank mixtures for controlling Amaranthus retroflexus and Chenopodium album.

BACKGROUND: Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), a globally significant perennial leguminous forage crop, is widely cultivated in Inner Mongolia. Problematic weeds present a significant challenge to alfalfa production during the seedling stage, especially redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.). However, limited information is available on pre-emergence herbicides effective against both redroot pigweed and common lambsquarters in alfalfa fields during the establishment phase in Inner Mongolia. RESULTS: We examined the effects of 12 pre-emergence he

Novel Galactosyl Moiety-Conjugated Furylchalcones Synthesized Facilely Display Significant Regulatory Effect on Plant Growth.

The expansion of weed infestation has increased the demand on new herbicides. A series of novel galactosyl moiety-conjugated furylchalcones was facilely synthesized in which the furyl group (A ring) was combined with the substituted benzene group (B ring), and a galactosyl moiety was introduced. All these galactosyl furylchalcones were predicted to be phloem-mobile. Most of the galactosyl furylchalcones significantly promoted early seedling growth of sorghum and barnyardgrass under dark conditions, but all of them revealed considerable anti-growth ability on illuminated pot plants; especially,

Genome-wide DNA methylation alterations of Alternanthera philoxeroides in natural and manipulated habitats: implications for epigenetic regulation of rapid responses to environmental fluctuation and phenotypic variation.

Alternanthera philoxeroides (alligator weed) is an invasive weed that can colonize both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Individuals growing in different habitats exhibit extensive phenotypic variation but little genetic differentiation in its introduced range. The mechanisms underpinning the wide range of phenotypic variation and rapid adaptation to novel and changing environments remain uncharacterized. In this study, we examined the epigenetic variation and its correlation with phenotypic variation in plants exposed to natural and manipulated environmental variability. Genome-wide methylat

Herbicide resistance management strategies: how do they compare with those for insecticides, fungicides and antibiotics?

Herbicides are the largest category of pesticides used in global agriculture, which is reflected in the rate of increase in the number of unique cases of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes since the late 1950s. Recommended herbicide resistance management strategies and tactics have evolved over the past 50 years through cumulative research and experience and have been regularly reviewed. Nevertheless, new perspectives may be gained by viewing current recommended strategies through the lens of insecticide, fungicide, and antibiotic resistance management. What commonalities exist and what is the

Architecture and hyperparameter optimization of YOLOv5 and YOLOv8 for weed detection in garlic fields.

Weed adaptability to environmental conditions poses a major challenge in agricultural production, often leading to yield reduction or even complete crop loss. Effective weed detection requires algorithms tailored to the unique visual and biological characteristics of each crop. However, despite the agricultural importance of garlic, no studies have developed optimized state-of-the-art deep learning models for weed identification in garlic fields. Addressing this gap, the present study focuses on optimizing two prominent object detection frameworks-YOLOv5 and YOLOv8-for accurate weed detection

Quantitative Proteomic Analysis of Alligator Weed Leaves Reveals That Cationic Peroxidase 1 Plays Vital Roles in the Potassium Deficiency Stress Response.

Alligator weed is reported to have a strong ability to adapt to potassium deficiency (LK) stress. Leaves are the primary organs responsible for photosynthesis of plants. However, quantitative proteomic changes in alligator weed leaves in response to LK stress are largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the physiological and proteomic changes in leaves of alligator weed under LK stress. We found that chloroplast and mesophyll cell contents in palisade tissue increased, and that the total chlorophyll content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and net photosynthetic rate (PN) increased

S-Aryl Butenolide Thioacetates as Strigolactone Agonists: Mechanism-Guided Design for Weed Management and Crop Growth Regulation.

Strigolactones (SLs) act as plant hormones regulating shoot architecture and as rhizospheric signals inducing parasitic weed germination. Herein, sulfur-containing SL agonists were designed and synthesized to explore their potential in weed management and crop growth regulation. A series of S-aryl butenolide thioacetates were prepared through a modular two-step synthetic route. Their biological activities were evaluated using Orobanche cumana seed germination assays, winter wheat tillering tests, and strawberry fruit development studies. Several compounds exhibited pronounced SL-like activity,

Physiological and quantitative proteomic analyses unraveling potassium deficiency stress response in alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides L.) root.

Physiological and iTRAQ based proteomic analysis provided new insights into potassium deficiency stress response in alligator weed root. Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) has a strong ability to adapt to potassium deficiency (LK) stress. Proteomic changes in response to this stress are largely unknown in alligator weed. In this study, we investigated physiological and molecular mechanisms under LK using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation to characterize proteome-level changes in this plant. Emerging Issues on Tropane Alkaloid Contamination of Food in Europe.

The occurrence of tropane alkaloids (TAs), toxic plant metabolites, in food in Europe was studied to identify those TAs in food most relevant for human health. Information was extracted from the literature and the 2016 study from the European Food Safety Authority. Calystegines were identified as being inherent TAs in foods common in Europe, such as Solanum tuberosum (potato), S. melongena (eggplant, aubergine), Capsicum annuum (bell pepper) and Brassica oleracea (broccoli, Brussels sprouts). In addition, some low-molecular-weight tropanes and Convolvulaceae-type TAs were found inherent to bel

Sulfonamide in agricultural pest management: past and recent prospects.

The sulfonamide moiety (-SO2NH-) is a structurally versatile motif in agrochemical discovery. It can engage in hydrogen bonding, modulate molecular polarity and acidity, and act as a bioisostere or linking fragment in ligand design. Inspired by the mechanism of sulfonamide antibiotics, researchers have developed a range of agrochemicals active against plant pathogens and weeds. However, the development of sulfonamide-based agrochemicals has been unbalanced: commercial products are mainly concentrated in herbicides and some fungicides, whereas research on insecticides, antiviral and plant-growt

Allelopathy in the natural and agricultural ecosystems and isolation of potent allelochemicals from Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) and Hairy vetch (Vicia villosa).

We have studied on allelopathy of plants and developed methods to identify the effective substances in root exudates, leaf leacheate, and volatile chemicals emitted from plants. We found traditional cover plants that show allelopathic activity are useful for weed control. It could eliminate the use of synthetic chemicals for this purpose. Allelopathy is a natural power of plants to protect themselves by producing natural organic chemicals. Some endemic plants in Asia, already known by farmers in the region, as either cover crops used in intercropping, hedgerow, or agroforestry, were found to p

Impact of sequential herbicides application on crop productivity, weed and nutrient dynamics in soybean under conservation agriculture in Vertisols of Central India.

Adoption of conservation agriculture (CA) is very slow due to weed infestations. The application of herbicides is the only viable option to deal with problem of weed management to adhere with basic principles of CA. A field experiment was carried out for three years to evaluate the expediency of different herbicides and their sequential applications under CA. In this study, seven treatments comprised of either alone or sequential application of pre-emergence (PE) and post-emergence (PoE) herbicides, hand weeding and weedy check were tested in soybean. Result indicated that sequential applicati

Plant growth point localization via epoch-based prior annealing.

Accurate localization of plant growth points is essential for precision agriculture applications, including electro-weeding and laser weeding. While crop and weed detection has been extensively studied, existing methods focus primarily on object-level recognition and often neglect fine-grained growth point localization. To address this limitation, we propose a novel training strategy, epoch-based prior annealing (EPA), which incorporates the excess green minus excess red (ExG-ExR) index as prior knowledge and introduces schedule factor and gain factor to effectively steer keypoint regression.

The use of bio-guided fractionation to explore the use of leftover biomass in Dutch flower bulb production as allelochemicals against weeds.

A major problem in flower bulb cultivation is weed control. Synthetic herbicides are mainly used, although they cause a range of problems, and integrated weed control through application of naturally occurring allelochemicals would be highly desirable. Flower bulb production creates large amounts of leftover biomass. Utilizing this source for weed control may provide new applications of the bulb crops. We therefore screened 33 flower bulb extracts for allelochemical activity against weeds. Several methanol and chloroform extracts were observed to inhibit germination and growth of Senecio vulga
