Medicinal and Edible Plants for the Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Synergistic Modulation of the Microbiota-Metabolite-Immune Axis.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition driven by the intertwined interplay of gut dysbiosis, immune perturbation, and metabolic imbalance. Current single-target therapies often fail to durably restore homeostasis in this complex ecosystem, and have thereby increased interest in diet-based holistic interventions. Plants traditionally used as both food and medicine, such as Crataegus pinnatifida, Ganoderma lucidum, and Codonopsis pilosula, are natural products that possess both nutritional and therapeutic attributes. The use of such plants is commonly referred to as medicinal fo

Synergistic effects of edible plants with light environment on the emotion and sleep of humans in long-duration isolated environment.

The emotion and sleep-related problems of humans who are on mission of deep-space and deep-sea exploration are topics of special interest because of the isolated environment. Effective regulatory approaches should be developed to manage the positive emotions and sleep quality in a long-duration isolated environment. The results reported that emotion and sleep were closely linked to each other because plants could significantly regulate humans' emotion and sleep through their own color and fragrance. Additionally, the light conditions prevailing in that location also had significant influence o

Antioxidant status and human health. Use of cyclic voltammetry for the evaluation of the antioxidant capacity of plasma and of edible plants.

The low molecular weight antioxidants (LMWA) play a major role in protecting biological systems against reactive oxygen-derived species (ROS), and reflect the antioxidant capacity of the system. The cyclic voltammetry (CV) has been conveniently used and validated for the quantitation of the antioxidant capacity of the LMWA of blood plasma, tissue homogenates, and plant extracts. The CV tracing provides the biological oxidation potential (E and E1/2 which relate to the nature of the molecule(s)), the intensity of the anodic current wave (Ia), and its area S (both relate to the concentration of

Contributions of the international plant science community to the fight against infectious diseases in humans-part 2: Affordable drugs in edible plants for endemic and re-emerging diseases.

The fight against infectious diseases often focuses on epidemics and pandemics, which demand urgent resources and command attention from the health authorities and media. However, the vast majority of deaths caused by infectious diseases occur in endemic zones, particularly in developing countries, placing a disproportionate burden on underfunded health systems and often requiring international interventions. The provision of vaccines and other biologics is hampered not only by the high cost and limited scalability of traditional manufacturing platforms based on microbial and animal cells, but

Metabolic perturbations in the edible plant Houttuynia cordata Thunb. induced by microplastic pollution and development of a rapid detection method.

The widespread use of agricultural plastic products and plastic packaging has led to microplastics (MPs) becoming a new class of environmental pollutants, posing threats to both human health and plant growth. However, current research on MPs' impact on plants predominantly focuses on yield and morphological traits, while the mechanisms by which MPs affect volatile flavor compounds in plants remain poorly understood. Additionally, existing detection methods are often hampered by cumbersome sample preparation procedures and high costs. This study employed Houttuynia cordata Thunb., a traditional
