Micro- and nanoplastics-induced stress in plants: uptake, physiological disruption, and toxicity mechanisms.

The persistence and progressive fragmentation of plastic waste into micro- and nanoplastics (M/NPs) represent a significant and escalating threat to agro-ecosystems, adversely impacting a broad spectrum of organisms from soil microbiota to plants, animals, and ultimately human health. Although ecotoxicological studies have documented adverse outcomes, connections between plastic exposure and specific plant physiological endpoints remain underexplored. Here, we synthesize the current evidence on the interaction of plastics particle with plants, especially emphasizing accumulation and distributi

Amphiphilic fluralaner pro-pesticides with enhanced systemicity on plants and reduced honeybee toxicity.

Fluralaner, as a broad-spectrum and highly effective pesticidal molecule, is severely limited from agricultural application due to its high toxicity to honeybees. Herein, novel pro-pesticides were prepared by covalently linking fluralaner to polyethylene glycol and long-chain fatty acids, respectively, and were subsequently self-assembled into regular nano-micelles to reduce the toxicity of fluralaner to honeybees. The results showed that the obtained pro-pesticides self-assembled into nano-micelles without using any adjuvants, and the prepared nano-micelles showed spherical morphology, a low

From deficiency to toxicity: Magnesium increases cannabinoid and terpene production in cannabis plants.

BACKGROUND: The biological-therapeutic activity of medical cannabis is based on a wide range of secondary metabolites, including terpenes and the cannabis-specific cannabinoids, which are produced to the highest concentrations in the plants’ unfertilized inflorescences. Recent evidence demonstrate effects of exogenous factors on cannabinoid and terpene profiles in cannabis, with substantial impact to the macronutrients N,P,K. However, knowledge on effects of most other essential mineral-nutrients, including magnesium (Mg), is lacking. Mg-availability is of potential relevance for the pharmaceu

The Elephant in the Room: Clinical Progression and Management of Elephant Ear Plant Toxicity in an Adult.

Elephant ear plants are popular ornamental plants renowned for their large foliage. These plants have been implicated in various inadvertent and deliberate ingestions. The leaves and roots of these plants contain raphides, which are needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals. Ingestion of these crystals results in a localized inflammatory response, typically manifesting as irritation, edema, hypersalivation, and dysphagia. Herein, we describe a case of an older gentleman who presented to our institution following intentional ingestion of the leaves and roots of an elephant ear plant. This report d

A cadmium stress-responsive gene AtFC1 confers plant tolerance to cadmium toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Non-essential trance metal such as cadmium (Cd) is toxic to plants. Although some plants have developed elaborate strategies to deal with absorbed Cd through multiple pathways, the regulatory mechanisms behind the Cd tolerance are not fully understood. Ferrochelatase-1 (FC1, EC4.99.1.1) is the terminal enzyme of heme biosynthesis, catalyzing insertion of ferrous ion into protoporphyrin IX. Recent studies have shown that FC1 is involved in several physiological processes. However, its biological function associated with plant abiotic stress response is poorly understood. RESULTS: I

Prevention of fumonisin-induced maternal and developmental toxicity in rats by certain plant extracts.

In earlier work we have reported that garlic and cabbage extracts can protect laboratory animals from the toxic effects of different mycotoxins. Previous research demonstrated that fumonisin (FB) induced developmental effects in mice, rats and hamsters. The objectives of the present study were to utilize the pregnant rat as an in vivo model to compare the potential of garlic and cabbage seed extracts to prevent the developmental toxicity of FB and the effects of these extracts on sphingolipid metabolism in dam and foetus livers. Six treatment groups included a control group, a group fed on an

Degradation of Toxic Mimosine by a Hydrolytic Enzyme of Leucaena Psyllids (Jumping Plant Lice).

Psyllid, a noxious insect, has spread everywhere in the tropical and sub-tropical regions. This insect has an habit of infesting Leucaena leucocephala. We have found that a crude enzyme of psyllid hydrolyzed mimosine, a strongly toxic substance for livestock, into 3-hydroxv-4(1H)-pyridone, pyruvic acid, and ammonia. Besides, this enzyme was also able to cleave 3-hydroxy-4(1H)-pyridone.

The effects of near ultraviolet radiation on the toxic effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in animals and plants: a review.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are common contaminants of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Traditional, toxicological studies for defining the potential hazard of PAHs in wildlife have been conducted in the absence of UV radiation. However, recent toxicology studies particularly in the discipline of aquatic toxicology have presented evidence that PAHs may become toxic or substantially more toxic upon coexposure to UV light (300-400 nm). In this paper, a comprehensive review of the literature pertaining to the toxicological interaction of PAHs and UV light in aquatic and terrestrial

Toxicological characterisation of sludge from sewage treatment plants using toxicity identification evaluation protocols based on in vitro toxicity tests.

The ecotoxicological characterisation of complex mixtures, such as sludge from sewage treatment plants, is complex. Toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) protocols, developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA); to identify toxic pollutants in complex effluents, are useful tools in this context; to solve the difficulties in assessing unknown organic pollutants by analytical methods, the usefulness of bioassays to detect the relevant (toxic) organic compounds present in complex samples, and the possibilities of in vitro cytotoxicity tests as screening tools, offers

Authorization and Toxicity of Veterinary Drugs and Plant Protection Products: Residues of the Active Ingredients in Food and Feed and Toxicity Problems Related to Adjuvants.

Chemical substances applied in animal husbandry or veterinary medicine and in crop protection represent substantial environmental loads, and their residues occur in food and feed products. Product approval is governed differently in these two sectors in the European Union (EU), and the occurrence of veterinary drug (VD) and pesticide residues indicated by contamination notification cases in the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed of the EU also show characteristic differences. While the initial high numbers of VD residues reported in 2002 were successfully suppressed to less than 100 cases an

Cadmium Toxicity to Zea mays and Its Implications for the Uptake of Other Heavy Metals by the Plant.

Cadmium is an element that is unnecessary for the functioning of plant and animal organisms, and its widespread presence in the environment poses a serious threat to human and animal health. Therefore, effective methods are being sought to remediate soils contaminated with this element, including through the enrichment of degraded soils with organic matter. To this end, the effectiveness of selected organic sorbents, including starch, fermented bark, compost and humic acids, in mitigating the transfer of cadmium and other heavy metals from soil to plants was assessed. Model studies compared th

Mechanisms of Pesticide Toxicity in Fish: Insights Into the Ameliorative Role of Plant-Derived Compounds-A Review.

Pesticide contamination in aquatic environments poses severe risks to fish health, causing oxidative stress, immunosuppression, endocrine disruption, and neurotoxicity. These effects result from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROSs), enzyme inhibition, and damage to physiological systems. Plant-derived compounds and phytochemicals, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids, offer a sustainable strategy to mitigate these toxic effects due to their antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and detoxifying properties. Phytochemicals protect fish b

The role of exogenous hydrogen sulfide in mitigating cadmium toxicity in plants: A comprehensive meta-analysis.

Reducing the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and mitigating its toxicity are pivotal strategies for addressing Cd pollution's threats to agriculture and human health. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) serves as a signaling molecule, playing a crucial role in plant stress defense mechanisms. Nevertheless, a comprehensive assessment of the impact of exogenous H2S on plant growth, antioxidant properties, and gene expression under Cd stress remains lacking. In this meta-analysis, we synthesized 575 observations from 27 articles, revealing that exogenous H2S significantly alleviates Cd-induced growth inhibition
