We wanted to look for characteristics in injuries caused by rollerblades, skateboards and unmotorized kick scooters in order to recommend more targeted injury prevention. From September 2000 we did a two-year prospective registration of all small wheel device injuries attending Bergen Accident and Emergency Department's surgical unit. We registered a total of 273 injuries, and found an obvious difference in injury pattern between the three. Rollerbladers were more prone to fractures in their hands and arms, especially distal radial fractures, but also scaphoid fractures. This fracture is seldo

In order to improve arm control in a child with Erb's palsy, a computer game was used in which participation required the movement of a lever, controlled by the child's arm. Counter-balancing weights were used to facilitate movement but counteract pathological compensatory movements. The use of this system (with appropriate modifications at successive stages of therapy) produced a substantial improvement in arm control. It was concluded that the use of such techniques capitalizes on the child's motivation to succeed, and has advantages over traditional physiotherapy that relies on passive, rep

Consideration of a child's motor proficiency, intrinsic motivation, internal locus of control, and freedom to suspend many of the constraints of objective reality were proposed to provide a more comprehensive assessment of play than would an assessment of play performance alone. For empirical validation of this conceptual model of play, 29 subjects (15 nondisabled children and 14 children with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis) between the ages of 4 years 6 months and 6 years 6 months were given four assessments: (a) the Preschool Play Scale (Bledsoe & Shepherd, 1982, Knox, 1974); (b) the Bruinink

The case report of a near-fatal asphyxiation of an 11-month-old child by a 26 mm (diameter) toy ball is presented. The lack of compliance with existing Consumer Product Safety Commission standards for small parts is discussed, and a recommendation is made regarding the coloring of ingestible objects.

Children and youth with disabilities have fewer opportunities for structured and unstructured active play than their peers without disabilities. This umbrella review explored how active play is defined and perceived among children and youth with disabilities and their adult facilitators, and identified barriers, facilitators, and interventions influencing active play among children and youth with disabilities. A total of 18 review articles were deemed eligible and synthesized guided by the Social Ecological Model (SEM). Among children and youth with disabilities, active play was defined as fun

BACKGROUND: Outdoor and risky play are associated with physical, cognitive, social, and emotional health and wellbeing throughout childhood. All children have the right to play, yet children with disabilities (CWD) are not engaging sufficiently in outdoor or risky play. There is limited literature exploring CWD participation in outdoor and risky play. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to summarize the literature exploring CWD experiences of outdoor and risky play, including definitions, types, preferences, benefits, barriers, and strategies to support CWD engagement in outdoor and risky pla

The types, quantities, and permissible limits of dyestuffs used in the toy industry are susceptible since the relevant audience is children. For this reason, the dyestuffs used in children's play materials are one of the crucial issues to be emphasized. Rhodamine B, Brilliant Blue FCF, and Malachite Green are some of the most commonly used dyestuffs, and they are also included in our study. In addition to making play materials fun for children, it is vital to determine the amount of the dye in the play material to know the damage it will cause. For this purpose, an ultrasonically assisted, rap

Water beads are superabsorbent polymer balls. They were originally marketed for agricultural and decorative applications and are now sold as sensory toys. They can be harmful to children in 2 ways. Upon ingestion, water beads absorb liquid and, because they can increase in volume by more than a hundredfold, intestinal obstruction can result. In addition, they are made of polymerized acrylamide monomer. Acrylamide monomer can be toxic at high levels. Here, we present a case of intestinal obstruction in the setting of water bead ingestion temporarily associated with signs of neurotoxicity. The p

PURPOSE: We investigated the long-term impact and use, from the families' perspectives, of modified ride-on cars for children with motor disabilities.
METHOD: We used Participatory Action Research using photovoice methods with 13 families of young children with disabilities. Families collaborated as coresearchers by capturing photographs representing their experiences and sharing their meanings. Inductive thematic analysis was used.
RESULTS: We identified 4 themes: (1) opening doors for inclusion; (2) facilitating exploration and fun; (3) hopes for the future; and (4) challenges in design an

The physical activity (PA) behaviors of rural youth are not fully understood and community health practitioners often lack practical PA tools to evaluate their activities. The purpose of this study was to use the Youth Compendium, a publicly available PA assessment tool, to identify activities frequently reported among a sample of rural children and to provide translational implications for PA promotion in community settings. Ninety-seven children (mean age=8.9±1.1; female=58.8%) who participated in the rural NU-HOME obesity prevention randomized controlled trial completed a 7-day PA log and p

Adaptive ride-on toy programs have increased in popularity in recent years and provide novel rehabilitation tools as developmental aids for children with disabilities. While the adaptations made to these toys are intended to provide a safer experience for children with disabilities, safety concerns still exist. Within this context, the purpose of this study was to use a model with varying joint stiffness as a first-order approximation of a child with disabilities and to investigate whether modifications to ride-on toys are sufficient to prevent common injuries. Because the population of childr

BACKGROUND: Infants with Down syndrome (DS) are at risk for a range of phenotypic outcomes, including delays in the onset of reaching behaviour, a critical skill that facilitates early learning. This parallel-group feasibility and pilot study presents findings from a parent-mediated micro-intervention that aimed to support the development of reaching behaviour in a sample of infants with DS.
METHODS: Participants were 73 infants with DS and their caregivers. Infants who qualified for the home-based intervention (based on manual skill performance on Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Developm

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF) are the most common fractures sustained following a fall onto an outstretched hand among healthy children, and one of the leading causes of hospital admission and surgical intervention. The aim of this study was to examine SCHF occurring at public play spaces-particularly to determine whether or not the playground equipment implicated in injurious falls aligned with Canadian playground safety standards.
METHODS: Cases of children who attended the provincial paediatric orthopaedic clinic following SCHF at a public playground between April 2017

We describe two cases of acute-onset erythema, peeling, and pruritus or tenderness isolated to the palmar surface of the hands. A detailed exposure history revealed significant periods of contact with homemade slime; given the clinical findings and timing of exposure, acute contact dermatitis of the hands was suspected. Symptoms and clinical findings resolved after avoidance of the suspected causative contactants. There are few if any reported cases of contact dermatitis to homemade slime in the literature; this serves to highlight the importance of a thorough exposure history in the evaluatio

Concern about children's exposure to arsenic (As) from wood treated with chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA) led to its withdrawal from residential use in 2004. However, due to its effectiveness, millions of American homes still have CCA-wood decks on which children play. This study evaluated the effects of three deck-cleaning methods on formation of dislodgeable As and hexavalent chromium (CrVI) on CCA-wood surfaces and in leachate. Initial wipes from CCA-wood wetted with water showed 3-4 times more dislodgeable As than on dry wood. After cleaning with a bleach solution, 9.8-40.3μg/100cm(2) of Cr

Ingestion of foreign bodies in children is a commonly occurring event worldwide. Swallowed foreign bodies usually pass successfully through the alimentary canal, from the mouth to the anus, but occasionally they may become lodged in the lumen of the oesophagus and cause complications. Accurate diagnosis of a retained foreign body is crucial in anticipating and preventing complications, but diagnostic delay can occur. We present a case of delayed diagnosis of a foreign body ingestion in an infant. Based on our experience, we emphasise the importance of accurate interpretation of X-rays with par
