The anticipatory and consummatory interpersonal pleasure scale: Applicability to Chinese OCD patients.

As a transdiagnostic symptom, social anhedonia has gained increasing attention. Evidence suggests that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients demonstrate social anhedonia. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Anticipatory and Consummatory Interpersonal Pleasure Scale (ACIPS) in an undergraduate sample and Chinese OCD patients. Furthermore, we explored the relationship between clinical symptoms and ACIPS scores. This study involved 3,306 undergraduate students and 293 patients with OCD. Internal consistency and convergent validity of ACIPS were examined. Confirmatory fac

Psychopathy subfactors distinctively predispose to dispositional and state-level of sadistic pleasure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sadistic pleasure - the enjoyment of harm-infliction to others - can have devastating interpersonal and societal consequences. The current knowledge on non-sexual, subclinical forms of sadistic pleasure is poor. The present study therefore focussed on the personality correlates of sadistic pleasure and investigated the relationship between the different subcomponents of psychopathy and both dispositional and state-level sadistic pleasure. METHOD: N = 120 males drawn from a community sample filled out questionnaires to assess their level of psychopathy and dispositio

Desiring assemblages: A case for desire over pleasure in critical drug studies.

While critical drug researchers have long pushed for an acknowledgement of pleasure in discourses of drug use, few have explored the alternative possibilities offered by Deleuze and Guattari's concept of desire. In this paper I map out some of the conceptual differences between pleasure and desire and explore the opportunities opened up by attending more closely to desire in critical drug studies. I suggest that while discourses of pleasure do make an important intervention into and against dominant narratives of risk, harm, and addiction, they may inadvertently be working to keep in place the

Face Piercing (Body Art): Choosing Pleasure vs. Possible Pain and Posture Instability.

Piercings (body art, i.e., with jewelry) are more and more widespread. They can induce various complications such as infections, allergies, headaches, and various skin, cartilage, or dental problems, and represent a public health problem. We draw attention to possible side effects resulting from face piercing complications observed on four young adults such as eye misalignment, decreased postural control efficiency, and non-specific chronic back pain with associated comorbidity. We found that the origin was pierced jewelry on the face. Removing the jewelry restored eye alignment, improved post

Beyond Pleasure: Unraveling the Multifaceted Role of Dopamine in Obesity and Metabolic Regulation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Obesity is a heterogeneous chronic disease involving dysregulated energy intake and expenditure. Dopamine (DA) has traditionally been recognized as a key regulator of reward-driven feeding. However, accumulating evidence indicates that its functions extend beyond hedonic eating. This review examines the central and peripheral actions of DA in obesity. It focuses on neuronal and receptor diversity, DA-related circuits, metabolic interactions, and responses to anti-obesity interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: DA neurons and receptor subtypes exhibit substantial molecular, anatomic

The Shared Pleasure Paradigm: A study in an observational birth cohort in South Africa.

Mother-infant dyads in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) may be exposed to a range of factors associated with suboptimal development. Optimal infant development is likely supported by synchronicity in the early mother-infant relationship, but limited corroborative research is available in LMICs. The Drakenstein Child Health Study (DCHS) provided an opportunity to study this synchronicity and its associations in South Africa. A South African birth cohort study investigating early-life determinants of child health in a LMIC context provided participants. The Shared Pleasure (SP) paradigm

The pleasures of drunken one-night stands: Assemblage theory and narrative environments.

BACKGROUND: In this study, we use assemblage theory to investigate the link between alcohol use and one-night stands. METHODS: The data come from qualitative interviews conducted with 104 young participants in the night-time economy. RESULTS: We show that: (i) alcohol-fuelled sexual explorations (e.g. erotic fantasizing, flirting and sex) are of paramount importance for young partygoers; (ii) sexualized territories (e.g. private parties, rural feasts and the backseat of cars) significantly shape the experience and performance of one-night stands; and (iii) contrary to previous research, one-

Pleasure and pain: the effect of (almost) having an orgasm on genital and nongenital sensitivity.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of sexual arousal and orgasm on genital sensitivity has received little research attention, and no study has assessed sensation pleasurableness as well as painfulness. AIM: To clarify the relationship between sexual arousal, orgasm, and sensitivity in a healthy female sample. METHODS: Twenty-six women privately masturbated to orgasm and almost to orgasm at two separate sessions, during which standardized pressure stimulation was applied to the glans clitoris, vulvar vestibule, and volar forearm at three testing times: (i) baseline; (ii) immediately following masturba

Immediate pleasures and future consequences. A neuropsychological study of binge eating and obesity.

Longitudinal data indicate that our capacity for adaptive self-regulation is a relatively stable predisposition that appears in childhood and predicts future life successes. In 2004, we published the first study demonstrating decision-making deficits in overweight/obese adult women. The present study is an extension of these findings. We assessed obese women with (n=65) and without (n=73) binge-eating disorder (BED), and a group (n=71) of normal-weight women, on two neuropsychological tests: the Iowa Gambling Task and a Delay Discounting measure. The BED and obese groups had worse performance

Male circumcision and penis enhancement in Southeast Asia: matters of pain and pleasure.

This paper reviews some uniquely male sexual health concerns in Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Indonesia. These include various forms of male circumcision, different types of 'penis enhancement' carried out across the region and the use of dry sex by women. These practices appear to be motivated by specific notions of sexual pleasure, based on indigenous gender constructs. Although they may or may not pose a serious public health problem, as markers of misguided or exploitative gender relations they do reveal important aspects of social psychology related to sexuality and sexual

'It's Pure Bliss': Pharmaceutical pleasures in later-life use of sleeping medication.

While research on prescribed sleeping medications has largely focused on risks and regulation, this paper examines a less explored dimension: the pleasures of long-term use. Drawing on qualitative interviews and diaries with 38 UK users aged 65+, it examines not only pharmacological effects but also the emotional, sensory, and symbolic dimensions of use, showing how pharmaceutical effects are enacted through embodied routines, expectations and everyday practices. Rather than incidental to therapeutic intent, pleasure is shown to be central to the enduring appeal and embeddedness of sleeping me

Pleasurable and problematic receptive anal intercourse and diseases of the colon, rectum and anus.

The ability to experience pleasurable sexual activity is important for human health. Receptive anal intercourse (RAI) is a common, though frequently stigmatized, pleasurable sexual activity. Little is known about how diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus and their treatments affect RAI. Engaging in RAI with gastrointestinal disease can be difficult due to the unpredictability of symptoms and treatment-related toxic effects. Patients might experience sphincter hypertonicity, gastrointestinal symptom-specific anxiety, altered pelvic blood flow from structural disorders, decreased sensation fro

Anhedonia in Semantic Dementia-Exploring Right Hemispheric Contributions to the Loss of Pleasure.

Semantic dementia (SD) is a younger-onset neurodegenerative disease characterised by progressive deterioration of the semantic knowledge base in the context of predominantly left-lateralised anterior temporal lobe (ATL) atrophy. Mounting evidence indicates the emergence of florid socioemotional changes in SD as atrophy encroaches into right temporal regions. How lateralisation of temporal lobe pathology impacts the hedonic experience in SD remains largely unknown yet has important implications for understanding socioemotional and functional impairments in this syndrome. Here, we explored how l

Patients With Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Exhibit Deficits in Consummatory but Not Anticipatory Pleasure.

Background: Reward dysfunctions have been reported in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which implicates a high possibility of anhedonia for this disease. However, several components of anhedonia, such as consummatory and anticipatory pleasure, has not been substantially studied in OCD patients. Methods: The Chinese version of the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (CV-TEPS) was used to evaluate both the consummatory and anticipatory pleasure in 130 OCD patients, 89 major depressive disorder (MDD) patients, and 95 healthy controls (HCs). The Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS)

Pleasurable emotional response to music: a case of neurodegenerative generalized auditory agnosia.

Recent functional neuroimaging studies implicate the network of mesolimbic structures known to be active in reward processing as the neural substrate of pleasure associated with listening to music. Psychoacoustic and lesion studies suggest that there is a widely distributed cortical network involved in processing discreet musical variables. Here we present the case of a young man with auditory agnosia as the consequence of cortical neurodegeneration who continues to experience pleasure when exposed to music. In a series of musical tasks, the subject was unable to accurately identify any of the

Diminished anticipatory pleasure predicts anhedonia in women with endometrisois: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia, a diminished response to pleasurable stimuli extensively studied in mental disorders and chronic pain, has been reported as prevalent among patients with deep endometriosis. Anhedonia is considered a multifaceted transdiagnostic construct involving cognitive, affective, and behavioral processes related to the anticipation and experience of pleasure. In this study, we aim to expand on previous findings by exploring the presence of anhedonia in patients with ultrasound diagnosed (UD) endometriosis compared to a control group, and by examining how its anticipatory and consu

Higher motivation and pleasure scores predict more reliance on model-free decision making.

Decision making is driven by factors such as motivation, pleasure, and cognitive skill. The current study evaluates how these factors are related to decision making in a community population. In recent years, work in the field of reinforcement learning has identified two main pathways that drive decision making: model-based and model-free learning. Model-free learning updates action values retrospectively, after a reward is received. In contrast, model-based learning updates action values prospectively, by weighing contextual factors, the overall structure of the situation, and reward received

Relation between riding pleasure and vehicle dynamics - Results from a motorcycle field test.

Powered two-wheelers are a common means of transport all over the world. In several countries, primary motorcycles with high displacement involve another purpose, namely motorcycling is a leisure activity. Motorcycles are used as tools of transport pleasure as opposed to being purely used for individual commuting purposes. The aim of the current study involves investigating the relation between experienced riding pleasure and riding behavior in a field test. Specifically, N = 12 motorcyclists between 21 and 66 years of age were observed while riding for approximately 8 h on public roads. The m

Fear-Pleasure Paradox in Recreational Fear: Neural Correlates and Therapeutic Potential in Depression.

BACKGROUND: Recreational fear, voluntary exposure to frightening stimuli in safe contexts (eg, horror films), elicits both distress and pleasure. Although paradoxical enjoyment of fear has been documented in healthy populations, its neural and psychological mechanisms, and potential therapeutic value for depression, remain unclear. METHODS: In a mixed-methods design, Study 1 (N = 216) assessed psychological and physiological responses to standardized fear stimuli across a continuum of depressive symptoms, using heart rate variability, salivary cortisol, and validated self-report measures. Navigating pain and pleasure: trauma and alcohol use among urban women in India.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use among women has been on the rise globally, with data showing a narrowing of the consumption gap between men and women. This has been notable in the urban settings of India as well. The current study explored the interplay of trauma and alcohol consumption amongst a cohort of urban Indian women. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 urban Indian heterosexual women, aged 18–55, diagnosed with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). The interviews, guided by the frameworks of ‘why’ and ‘when’ of alcohol use, adopted the Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) lens t
