[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Etiopathogenic and clinical considerations regarding a case].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is a rare condition characterized by gas-filled cysts in the submucosa and/or subserosa of the intestine. The authors present a case of Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis occurring in a patient with pyloric stenosis by duodenal ulcer and report a wide review of the literature. They discuss the major areas of study in its etiology, histopathology, diagnosis and treatment.

A new health problem due to trichloroethylene: pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

The relationship between pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) and occupation was studied in 66 patients reported in Japan during a 5-yr-period from 1979-1983. Information concerning their occupation was obtained from 37 (56.1%) patients; 16 patients had secondary PCI and 21 had primary PCI. No particular characteristics were noted in the occupations of secondary PCI patients. Primary PCI, occurring more frequently in females (15/21), affected predominantly the large intestine (20/21), locally involving the sigmoid colon in the majority (14) of the patients. Most patients with primary PCI (

[Negative report on trichloroethylene-induced pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in rats].

In recent years it has been suggested in Japan that occupational trichloroethylene exposure will induce primary pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis coli. A series of two experiments were conducted to ascertain the cause-effect relationship between trichloroethylene and pneumatosis as follows: In the first experiment, 12 male rats of Fischer strain were exposed to trichloroethylene at a nearly lethal concentration for 12 wk. Five out of 12 rats died during the experiment, and body weight gain was extremely depressed. However, neither pneumatosis nor histological changes were observed. No changes

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in dolicho-sigmoid colon with functional signs].

We present a patient with dolicho sigmoid colon who as admitted with severe functional signs and symptoms. Sigmoid colectomy was performed because of additional radiologic and endoscopic findings revealing an atypical, circumscribed massive polyposis. On histological examination typical pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis was found. This case of pneumatosis cystoides reveals the difficulties in diagnosing this disease, mechanically induced mucosul lesions caused by impaired motility are discussed as a possible etiology in this case.

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis, as a rare complications of coeliac disease].

Intestinal pneumatosis cystoides is rarely diagnosed clinical entity characterized by multiple gas containing cysts inside the wall of the gastrointestinal tract. Primary (15%) and secondary (85%) forms are known. In the more frequent secondary forms small intestine and the right side of the colon are mainly affected, and the underlying pathology can be gastrointestinal, pulmonary or immunological. The 64 year old male patient reported by the authors showed clinical signs of severe malabsorption (his body weight: 47,5 kg, height: 178 cm, BMI: 15). The intestinal pneumatosis was diagnosed by ex

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with free intraperitoneal air: a case report.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disorder of the medical management and clinical outcome of which largely depend on the severity of its clinical manifestation. A limited number of cases have been reported in the literature although it is suggested that the true incidence of this disorder is higher than observed in clinical practice. This is the case of a 76-year-old woman with a past medical history of Crohn's disease found to have PCI. The patient initially complained of abdominal pain, distention, and weight loss. Chest and abdominal radiographs demonstrated free intraperit

Acute pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis following allogeneic transplantation -- the surgeon's dilemma.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is still a poorly understood phenomenon, currently considered to result from primary mucosal insult from varying causes. We report a case of severe PCI in a patient with chronic GVHD after bone marrow transplantation (BMT) performed to treat secondary AML. Post BMT, the patient suffered acute intestinal and cutaneous GVHD, eventually developing intestinal and biopsy-proven cutaneous chronic GVHD, which necessitated continuous steroid therapy. Chronic pancreatitis associated with GVHD was diagnosed by explorative surgery in February 2000 on the basis of

The natural course of Clostridium perfringens--induced pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis.

Primary pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is an uncommon, usually benign condition whose natural course is poorly understood and which can sometimes produce significant changes in a patient's cecum and sigmoid colon. In this study, PCI was produced by monocontaminating the peritoneal cavities of adult germfree rats with Clostridium perfringens. These animals were then observed for up to 26 weeks. PCI took up to two weeks to develop, lasted at least ten weeks in most animals, and presumably disappeared from 42% of 26 animals killed during the final 16 weeks. PCI was usually benign, but i

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: a case report and review of the literature].

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis features the presence of subserum or submucous cysts with gas in the intestinal wall. Its prevalence is 0.03%, although it has increased in the past decades due to a greater use of colonoscopy in everyday medical practice. Though there are several theories about its origin and many associated diseases were reported, its pathogenesis still remains uncertain. It is generally diagnosed as a finding in an imaging test. The treatment depends on the severity of the associated disease and symptoms. We report the case of a 59-year-old woman, heavy smoker, with no oth

[Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis with a gastric ulcer and the stenosis of the pylorus].

A health check up in a 31-year-old man revealed free air under the diaphragm by a chest X-ray. The CT showed marked cystic emphysema along the small intestinal wall, as well as thickening and stenosis of the pyloric wall of stomach. Therefore, we suspected pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) with stenosis of the pylorus. Since no perforation of the intestinal tract was diagnosed, it was preserved. Upper G.I. endoscopy showed H2 stage gastric ulcer in the posterior wall of the antrum. Eventually, a diagnosis of PCI with gastric ulcer and stenosis of the pylorus was, which we preserved. We

Recurrent pneumoperitoneum with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in tuberculous pleurisy: Case report.

RATIONALE: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare condition for which autopsy studies have reported a prevalence of 0.03% in the general population. Although PCI can be associated with pneumoperitoneum, many cases are benign and do not reflect viscus perforation. Coexistence with tuberculous pleurisy and recurrent pneumoperitoneum is rare and may be underrecognized. PATIENT CONCERNS: In this report, we present the case of a 38-year-old Tibetan male who experienced tuberculous pleurisy accompanied by recurrent pneumoperitoneum with PCI. Despite the presence of free air, he remained

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis associated with gastric outlet obstruction; A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is defined as the presence of air-filled cysts in the bowel wall. The overall incidence of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in the general population is very rare. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This is a 44-year-old male patient who presented with epigastric abdominal pain and repeated vomiting of one-month duration. The patient was emaciated; vital signs were within normal limits. The abdomen was grossly distended. Laboratory tests, radiologic imaging, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were performed. The diagnosis of gastric

Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis Secondary to Sunitinib Treatment for Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor.

A 67-year-old man with liver and retroperitoneal metastases from a gastrointestinal stromal tumor arising in the jejunum had been administered oral sunitinib for 2 months. He presented to our department with right-sided lower abdominal pain. His general condition was good, with no high-grade fever, and the other vital signs were also stable. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography was promptly performed, and pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) was detected in a wide area around the ileocecal lesion. There were no signs of acute abdomen requiring emergency surgery due to conditions such as i

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) in a patient with undiagnosed systemic sclerosis.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) refers to the presence of gas within the wall of the small or large intestine. The pathophysiology is incompletely understood and is probably multifactorial in nature. PCI is a known but rare complication of systemic scleroderma, and the aetiology of PCI in patients with scleroderma is not fully understood. We present the case of a patient who was referred to gastroenterology clinic by her general practitioner for investigation of 8 months of weight loss, urgency, diarrhoea, bloating and crampy abdominal pain. Extensive investigations were performed to

Four Cases of Pneumatosis Cystoides Intestinalis Complicated by Connective Tissue Diseases.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease that involves the presence of gas in the intestinal wall. Connective tissue disease (CTD) is a major cause of secondary PCI. In addition to the nature of CTDs, the use of prednisolone and some immunosuppressants, and the presence of complicating diseases such as diabetes mellitus, constipation and pulmonary diseases are involved in the development of PCI. This report describes four cases of PCI with different CTDs (granulomatosis with polyangiitis, rheumatoid arthritis, dermatomyositis, and overlap syndrome) and discusses the backgroun

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis: an unusual cause of intestinal ischemia and pneumoperitoneum.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI), with an unknown etiology, is an uncommon disease characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts within the submucosa or subserosa of the intestinal wall. Intestinal obstruction and/or perforation are relatively uncommon complications associated with PCI. The patients are often prone to misdiagnosis or mistreatment. The diagnosis of PCI is based on plain radiography or endoscopy. Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) provides data on other intra-abdominal pathologies. Therefore, it is an important modality for the diagnosis of PCI. We pre

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis. Autopsy study of two fatal cases in adults.

Two cases of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI), apparently of different etiologies, were found at autopsy in cancer patients. One case was associated with chronic obstructive lung disease and with emphysema of soft tissues of the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and mesentery, whereas the other showed pseudomembranous enteritis with bacterial and fungal overgrowths. The latter case supports the role of gas-forming bacteria, while the former provides an anatomical evidence of pulmonary disease as a cause of PCL. Obstruction of the upper gastrointestinal tract may contribute to the occurrenc
