Effects of murine endotoxemia on lymphocyte subsets and clearance of staphylococcal pulmonary infection.

In a model of staphylococcal pneumonia initiated during systemic endotoxemia in BALB/c mice, a significant reduction of the number of circulating CD4+ and CD8+ T-lymphocytes, B-lymphocytes, and NK cells, as well as lung-resident total T- and CD4+ T-lymphocytes was demonstrated. Staphylococcus aureus exposure only induced a similar decrease of lymphocyte subsets in the blood. However, the number of lung-resident total T- and CD4+ T-lymphocytes was increased. More viable bacteria were recovered from the lungs of S. aureus-infected mice than from those animals previously treated with lipopolysacc

Host Nitric Oxide Disrupts Microbial Cell-to-Cell Communication to Inhibit Staphylococcal Virulence.

Staphylococcus aureus is a commensal bacterium that can asymptomatically colonize its host but also causes invasive infections. Quorum sensing regulates S. aureus virulence and the transition from a commensal to a pathogenic organism. However, little is known about how host innate immunity affects interbacterial communication. We show that nitric oxide suppresses staphylococcal virulence by targeting the Agr quorum sensing system. Nitric oxide-mediated inhibition occurs through direct modification of cysteine residues C55, C123, and C199 of the AgrA transcription factor. Cysteine modification

The global burden of hospitalisation due to pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus in the under-5 years children: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumonia is a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to estimate the global hospitalisation due to Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia in under-5 children. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of primary studies following the PRISMA-P guidelines. We searched Medline, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL, Global Index Medicus, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, and CQvip. We included studies reporting data on Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia, confirmed by detection of the pathogen in sterile-site samples in under-5 ho

[Protective efficacy of combined administration of the multicomponent vaccine and the immunomodulator myelopid in experimental infections in mice].

The influence of myelopid (MP) on the protective activity of polycomponent vaccine VP-4 prepared from the antigens of opportunistic bacteria was studied on experimental infections of mice, caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus. In staphylococcal and Klebsiella infections the joint administration of vaccine VP-4 and MP produced more pronounced protective effect than each of these preparations, introduced alone. The protective action of vaccine VP-4 was specially enforced by MP in cases of local staphylococcal infection. Recommendations on the joint us

[Current problems posed by staphylococcal infections in pediatric patients].

A PEDIATRIC PATHOGEN: Staphylococci remain one of the most important pathogenic agents leading to community-acquired infection in children. Over the last decades, there has been an evolution in the localizations of these infections: dramatic pleuropulmonary staphylococcal infection in newborns has almost entirely disappeared in developed countries. Conversely, skin infections and soft tissue infections as well as bone and joint localizations are frequent. The severity of these bone and joint infections has however declined allowing less aggressive therapeutic regimens. One of the current probl

Native children's lung.

A high proportion of Cree and other North American Indian children have a chronic cough and many have bronchial wall thickening on radiographs, reminiscent of white children with asthma, mild cystic fibrosis, or immune deficiency. When compared to postmortem studies, radiographs underestimate the degree of bronchial wall thickening present. As compared to white children, Indian children in the first two years of life are more susceptible to recurrent bronchitis and pneumonia, are much more likely to develop pneumonia with rubeola and pertussis, and are more likely to develop chronic lung disea

whISOBAXTM Inhibits Bacterial Pathogenesis and Enhances the Effect of Antibiotics.

As bacteria are becoming more resistant to commonly used antibiotics, alternative therapies are being sought. whISOBAX (WH) is a witch hazel extract that is highly stable (tested up to 2 months in 37 °C) and contains a high phenolic content, where 75% of it is hamamelitannin and traces of gallic acid. Phenolic compounds like gallic acid are known to inhibit bacterial growth, while hamamelitannin is known to inhibit staphylococcal pathogenesis (biofilm formation and toxin production). WH was tested in vitro for its antibacterial activity against clinically relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negati

Pneumonia due to Staphylococcus aureus in a patient with AIDS: review of incidence and report of an atypical roentgenographic presentation.

Multiple defects in host defense mechanisms produce an increased incidence of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. Clinical studies suggest that Staphylococcus aureus is an uncommon cause of such infections, though its incidence is increased in the setting of intravenous drug use, indwelling vascular catheter, and coexistent pulmonary Kaposi's sarcoma or pneumonia due to Pneumocystis carinii. The significantly higher incidence of S aureus pneumonia documented in autopsy series suggests that the infection frequently remains undiag

Successful percutaneous drainage of pneumatoceles in an extremely low-birthweight infant.

Pneumatoceles are thin-walled, air-filled cystic lesions developing within the lung parenchyma. It used to be a relatively common entity in the presurfactant era when preterm babies were ventilated at an unacceptably high positive pressure for respiratory distress syndrome. Pneumatocele formation is a very rare complication of pneumonia in neonates. We here report a case of extremely low-birthweight (ELBW) neonate who developed large bilateral pneumatoceles after staphylococcal pneumonia. Hereby, we present a case of an ELBW infant with bilateral massive pneumatoceles who underwent successful

Administration of Vaccines in Dairy Sheep and Goat Farms: Patterns of Vaccination, Associations with Health and Production Parameters, Predictors.

This paper reports findings regarding patterns of vaccine usage in sheep and goat farms, in 325 sheep flocks and 119 goat herds throughout Greece. The objectives of the study were (a) to describe the patterns of vaccine administration in small ruminant farms and (b) to highlight factors that were associated with vaccinations in the farms. Vaccination against brucellosis was performed in all farms into the study. Among optional vaccinations, anti-clostridial vaccination was most frequently performed (in 97.8% of farms), followed by vaccination against contagious agalactia, (56.5% of farms), pne

Bacterial laryngotracheitis associated with toxic shock syndrome in an adult.

Nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS) in adults has been associated with various staphylococcal respiratory tract infections, including pharyngitis, tonsillitis, pneumonia, and postinfluenza respiratory tract infections. In children, nonmenstrual TSS has also been described as a complication of bacterial tracheitis. We describe the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with laryngotracheitis as well as clinical and laboratory evidence of TSS. Culture of her sputum samples yielded pure growth of Staphylococcus aureus, which was shown to produce TSS toxin 1 (TSST-1). The patient responded

[Bilateral pulmonary infiltrations in patients admitted to an intensive care unit].

Diffuse pulmonary infiltrates are commonly found in hypoxic respiratory failure. We have reviewed 16 patients admitted to our medical intensive care unit over a period of 21 months, of whom seven died in hospital. Only patients requiring ventilatory support (CPAP or mechanical ventilation) for respiratory failure due to non-cardiogenic causes were included. All patients met the criteria for the diagnosis of ARDS. Three patients suffered from Wegener's granulomatosis, three from Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, three from bacterial pneumonia, and two from pneumonia. Staphylococcal septicemia, SL

Molecular analysis of staphylococcal superantigens.

Staphylococcal superantigens (SAgs) comprise a large family of exotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus strains. These exotoxins are important in a variety of serious human diseases, including menstrual and nonmenstrual toxic shock syndrome (TSS), staphylococcal pneumonia and infective endocarditis, and recently described staphylococcal purpura fulminans and extreme pyrexia syndrome. In addition, these SAg exotoxins are being increasingly recognized for their possible roles in many other human diseases, such as atopic dermatitis, Kawasaki syndrome, nasal polyposis, and certain autoimmune di

[Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in a patient with hyper-IgE syndrome].

A 15-year-old girl with abnormal findings detected on a medical check-up chest x-ray film was admitted to our center. High-resolution computed tomography, performed upon hospitalization, demonstrated panlobular nodular darkening in left lung fields, and an expanding, blended, map-like darkening near the pleura. Since a Grocott stain-positive cyst was confirmed histopathologically by transbronchial lung biopsy, the patient was given a diagnosis of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Drug therapy was initiated with sulfamethoxaxole trimethoprim (Baktar), and on the 58th day, chest CT confirmed that

Hyper-IgE syndrome in an 11 year old female presenting with acneiform rash.

Hyper-IgE (HIES) is a rare, primary immunodeficiency characterised by eczema, recurrent staphylococcal infections, pneumonia, increased serum IgE and eosinophilia. We present the case of an 11-year-old girl presenting to dermatology with an acneiform facial rash and associated bacterial lymphadenitis. History was significant for otitis media, primary tooth retention, low impact wrist fracture, infantile acne and an absence of eczema or pneumonia. Investigations demonstrated mildly elevated IgE, normal eosinophils but positivity for a STAT3 gene mutation-thus representing a case of HIES present

The effectiveness of countercurrent immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) used for the accelerated differential diagnosis of pneumococcal, staphylococcal, mycoplasmal and Legionella infections in cases of pneumonia has been shown. The presence of correlation between the results obtained in the bacterial study of sputa and bronchial washings and in CIE has been revealed, which gives grounds for recommending CIE for the accelerated diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia on the basis of the analysis of sputa, bronchial washings and blood sera obtained from patients.
