OBJECTIVE: To identify foot pain clusters according to pain location in a community-based sample of the general population.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from the North West Adelaide Health Study. Data were obtained between 2004 and 2006, using computer-assisted telephone interviewing, clinical assessment, and self-completed questionnaire. The location of foot pain was assessed using a diagram during the clinical assessment. Hierarchical cluster analysis was undertaken to identify foot pain location clusters, which were then compared in relation to demographics, comorbidities, and podiatr

UNLABELLED: Subtalar dislocations of the talonavicular and talocalcaneal joints are rare, accounting for approximately one percent of all dislocations.1 These dislocations are typically the result of a high energy mechanism and present a challenge during reduction attempts. We present the case of a male in his early 20's who presented to the emergency department after a motorcycle accident with right foot and ankle pain and obvious deformity. Emergent X-ray and immediate attempt at reduction are of utmost importance with these dislocations. After multiple failed attempts at reduction in the ED

BACKGROUND: The coexistence of deformity of the nail bed and subungual exostosis (SE) is a frequent finding in podiatric practice in the fourth and fifth decades of life. However, it has been described by other specialists as being an uncommon osteocartilaginous tumor most prevalent during the second and third decades of life. This study attempts to determine the causes of this discrepancy.
METHODS: Two authors independently conducted a systematic bibliographic review in multiple databases, podiatry sources and others, and key words were chosen to achieve a broad search strategy. Studies repo

BACKGROUND: Foot problems are common in older people and are associated with impaired mobility and quality of life. However, the characteristics of foot problems in older Australians for whom English is a second language have not been evaluated.
METHODS: One hundred and four community-dwelling people aged 64 to 90 years with disabling foot pain (according to the case definition of the Manchester Foot Pain and Disability Index, or MFPDI) were recruited from four Greek elderly citizens clubs in Melbourne, Australia. All participants completed a Greek language questionnaire consisting of general

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes, with a lifetime risk of up to 34%. Despite preventive guidelines, gaps remain in the care chain. This study aimed to identify and prioritise improvements in DFU prevention, care, and self-care in the Region Västra Götaland, Sweden.
METHODS: A participatory action research design was used as part of a larger observational co-design study. Patients with diabetes, healthcare professionals, and researchers participated. Data were collected through Concept Mapping to generate and cluster ideas, followed by a workshop t

Diabetes prevalence in Aotearoa New Zealand is rising rapidly, disproportionately affecting Māori communities and contributing to significantly higher rates of diabetes-related lower limb amputations. These inequities reflect systemic issues such as colonisation, racism, and limited access to culturally safe care rather than clinical factors alone. Embedding tikanga (Māori customs) within podiatry foot screening offers a pathway to culturally responsive practice that honours Māori spiritual, physical, and cultural well-being. Integrating Rongoā Māori (traditional healing) and whānau-centred ap

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To identify general competence areas for graduating registered nurses and podiatrists providing chronic wound care.
BACKGROUND: The provision of care for chronic wounds involves a team of multiple professionals, and registered nurses and podiatrists play an important role. However, previous studies have found that registered nurses have limited competence in wound care. In addition, there are no standardised international competence areas for the provision of chronic wound care by registered nurses and podiatrists.
DESIGN: A qualitative design was used in this study.

This 4-year prospective study investigated the reasons for high levels of gangrene and major amputation in diabetic renal transplant patients and whether regular multidisciplinary foot care could reduce morbidity. All foot lesions were documented and investigated in 50 diabetic patients, mean age 49.2 +/- 11.0 (SD) years, duration of diabetes 25.3 +/- 9.0 years, time since renal transplantation 60.2 +/- 35.1 months, who attended a special foot clinic monthly for education, vascular and neurological assessment, podiatry and footwear. Foot lesions included: neuropathic ulcers, ischaemic ulcers,

Teaching science to the next generation begins with foundations laid in podiatric medical school. Interest and immersion in research continues to develop through residency as trainees prepare for cases, participate in journal clubs, present posters and articles, and attend conferences. Having adequate training is essential to production of quality research. Although challenges and barriers exist, numerous resources are available at all levels of practice to guide those who are interested in contributing to the body of literature that supports the profession. Ensuring a robust pipeline of futur

Foot care education is an important strategy in reducing lower limb complications. There is evidence that contemporary communication approaches can improve patient education outcomes. To inform the potential of such methods in diabetic foot education, we trialled a collaborative approach in patient education counselling in a podiatry clinic. We conducted a single-blind pragmatic randomised controlled trial on 52 diabetes patients who had an active foot ulcer. Participants were randomised to either collaborative education or traditional didactic education. Outcomes on knowledge and self-care be

BACKGROUND: Podiatrists provide care and education to people with diabetes. This often includes the use of education relating to complications of the disease and how to prevent them. It is currently unknown how Australian podiatrists provide this education. This study aimed to describe the foot related diabetes education being delivered to people with diabetes within the Australian podiatry setting.
METHODS: This cross-sectional cohort study contacted Australian podiatrists to complete an online survey regarding their provision of diabetes education. The Qualtrics online survey application wa

Fungal and mycobacterial cultures are routinely sent on orthopedic operative specimens, but their impact on clinical care is not well established. Processing fungal and mycobacterial cultures is time and labor intensive, associated with significant healthcare costs, and may yield false-positive results due to contamination. The objective of this study was to determine the utility and diagnostic yield of fungal and mycobacterial cultures from orthopedic operative specimens. Patients undergoing surgery by the orthopedic or podiatry service that had operative specimens sent for fungal and mycobac

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a complex multifaceted condition that can affect the lower extremity. Rarely mentioned 20 years ago, today it is the subject of numerous articles, books, and is a topic at most scientific seminars relating to the foot and ankle. It is a muscle imbalance initiated by a rupture, avulsion, or chronic inflammation of the tibialis posterior tendon. With time, it progresses from a flexible to rigid flatfoot deformity. Left untreated, peritalar dislocation and degenerative joint disease may develop. This article discusses the diagnosis, evaluation, and tr

The authors presented a rare case study of a patient with chronic elephantiasis involving the lower extremities. The patient had contracted lymphatic filariasis while serving in the armed forces during World War II. The patient was followed regularly for local wound care by the Veterans Affairs podiatry department. However, he died from congestive heart failure and pneumonia in May of 1993.

OBJECTIVE: People with diabetic neuropathy who have previously ulcerated are at high risk of re-ulceration. They should regularly attend podiatry clinics for surveillance and routine protective podiatric treatment. It has been suggested that inflammation prior to skin breakdown shows up as a hotspot on a thermal image even in the absence of clinical signs. The aim of this study is to quantify inter-patient and intra-patient thermal variations presented by diabetic feet at high risk of ulceration.
APPROACH: Whole foot and spot temperatures were recorded for 96 patients who attended two success

We investigated the prevalence and factors independently associated with foot complications in a representative inpatient population (adults admitted for any reason with and without diabetes). We analysed data from the Foot disease in inpatients study, a sample of 733 representative inpatients. Previous amputation, previous foot ulceration, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), peripheral neuropathy (PN), and foot deformity were the foot complications assessed. Sociodemographic, medical, and foot treatment history were collected. Overall, 46.0% had a foot complication with 23.9% having multiple;
