Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) frequently encounter potentially psychologically traumatic events (PPTEs) which include direct (e.g., happened to me) or indirect (e.g., part of my job) exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, and subsequently demonstrate an increased risk of developing posttraumatic stress injuries (PTSIs). Although PTSIs include mental health disorders, physical impairments such as the development of chronic pain and cardiovascular conditions are also implicated. The current study was designed to assess for changes in cardiac function a

Communities marginalized because of racism, heterosexism, and other systems of oppression have a history of being aggressively policed, and in those contexts, researchers have observed associations between a range of negative experiences with police and poor physical, mental, and behavioral health outcomes. However, past studies have been limited in that experiences of police contacts were aggregated at the neighborhood level and, if police contacts were self-reported, the sample was not representative. To address these limitations, we employed NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene 2017

AIMS: Detainees requiring access to healthcare services in police custody have been shown to suffer from poor physical and mental health, often exacerbated by substance misuse. This study examines the extent and nature of health needs in police custody across the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS), London.
METHODS: A survey (n = 1657) was administered by Healthcare Professionals (HCP) for one month in 2015 across all MPS custody suites representing a 73% response rate. A logistic regression model was created using four binary outcomes (whether a detainee was a drug user, had mental health issu

Taken-for-granted presumptions about race are incorporated into the operating logic of many institutions. In emergency police calls, racialization is routinely used to accomplish visual descriptions of persons of interest. This use of racial categories relies on and reproduces inferences about race as visually discernible. These inferences are bound up in colonial histories and ongoing racist violence and discrimination. Our discursive psychology study documents how participants make links between racial category membership and visual appearance and orient to racialization as a delicate but ne

BACKGROUND: Mistrust of law enforcement across the United States has implications for public health and safety. While direct police encounters shape perceptions of law enforcement, the influence of broader experiences with racial discrimination remains understudied. This study examined associations between racial discrimination and perceptions of police among US adults. METHODS: Data were from a web-based cross-sectional survey across 13 northeastern states in March–April 2023 (N = 5,048). Racial discrimination was measured in childhood, adolescence, adulthood, past year, and in the healthcare

INTRODUCTION: Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is defined as the sensorineural hearing loss caused by acute acoustic trauma or chronic exposure to high-intensity noises. Exposure to noises can lead to irreversible damage to the inner ear and, consequently, to a permanent shift of the hearing threshold. Police officers are particularly at risk of acute or chronic hearing damages. The aim of this study is to evaluate the hearing loss of police officers in relation to the occupational risk factors and clinical-anamnestic characteristics by collecting and analyzing existing data and evidence avai

The recognition of certain mental health conditions is important as this requires police officers to communicate and behave in an adjusted manner with affected individuals. The objective of the present study was to test police officers' knowledge about mental health symptoms as a component of their mental health literacy (MHL) and to examine if police officers' perceived knowledge corresponds with their actual knowledge. A questionnaire was used to assess for MHL representing mental health conditions which occur frequently in police requests (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, post-t

BACKGROUND: and goal: The Police is sometimes confronted with the death of a subject during physical restraint. In most of these cases a clear Cause of Death (COD) cannot be determined by the Pathologist. The goal of this research is to find and clarify a pattern and pinpoint a clearer COD.
METHOD: The research group is compiled of 38 closed police case files from the NPIID (National Police Internal Investigation Department) between 2005 and 2016. The control group is compiled of cases involving excitation and restraint, without leading to death. 148 cases were included from the NPIID between

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to assess the influence of shiftwork on change in endothelial function.
METHODS: This longitudinal study was conducted in 188 police officers (78.2% men). Shiftwork status (day, afternoon, night) was assessed objectively using daily Buffalo, NY payroll work history records. Brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) was assessed using ultrasound. Mean change in FMD% between 2004-2009 and 2010-2015 was compared across shiftwork using analysis of variance/covariance.
RESULTS: Overall, mean FMD% decreased from 5.74 ± 2.83 to 3.88 ± 2.11 over an average of 7 years

OBJECTIVE: Injured drivers with blood alcohol concentration (BAC) above the legal limit are rarely convicted of impaired driving. One explanation is that police may have difficulty recognizing alcohol intoxication in injured drivers. In this study, we compare police documentation of alcohol involvement with BAC measured on arrival at a hospital. Our objectives were to determine how often police document alcohol involvement in injured drivers with BAC ≥ 0.05 percent and identify factors that influence police documentation of alcohol involvement.
METHODS: We included injured drivers (1999-2003)

OBJECTIVE: Police officers face many stressors that may negatively impact sleep quality. This study compares subjective sleep quality in police officers with that in control subjects not involved in police or emergency services. We examined the effects of critical incident exposure (trauma exposure) and routine (nontraumatic) work environment stressors on sleep quality after controlling for the effects of work shift schedule.
METHODS: Subjective sleep disturbances were measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index in police officers (variable-shift workers, N = 551; stable day-shift workers,

The Emergency Treatment Center, a new program of crisis intervention services, has been in operation since February 1975. This seven-day-week, twenty-four-hour-a-day program backs up ten Northern California police departments to provide help to people who are experiencing psychological emergencies such as violent family fights, suicide attempts, and severe emotional disturbance; in addition, the Center responds to any kind of crisis call involving adolescents. The population of the area served is approximately 750,000 of whom approximately 110,000 are adolescents between 10 and 17 years of age

In the year ending March 2020, an estimated 773,000 people in England and Wales were sexually assaulted. These types of crimes have lasting effects on victims' mental health, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. There is a large body of literature which identifies several factors associated with the likelihood of the victim reporting a sexual assault to the police, and these differences may be due to rape myth stereotypes which perpetuate the belief that rape is only "real" under certain conditions. Less is known, however, about the effect these rape myths and ste

Burnout (BO) is a response to prolonged exposure to work-related stressors characterized by emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). The police working environment includes continued critical life-threatening situations, violence, and injuries, among other related factors putting them at high risk of distress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between Burnout Syndrome and sociodemographic, occupational, and health factors in Mexican police officers. We applied the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-

BACKGROUND: In the context of high rates of drug-related incarceration that disproportionately affect urban communities of colour, advocates for drug policy criminal justice reform have called for alternatives to mass incarceration. The Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program redirects low-level drug offenders to health and social services rather than immediately into the criminal justice system. In advance of piloting LEAD in Baltimore City, we assessed police perceptions towards harm reduction and specifically pre-booking diversion in effort to inform training and implementation ac
