Navigating distrust and competing priorities during the COVID-19 pandemic: insights from Florida to strengthen cooperation.

INTRODUCTION: Stopping an infectious disease outbreak relies on a coordinated set of actions across public and private institutions and the wider public. However, cooperation with public health recommendations was notably hindered during the pandemic by widespread distrust in science and government and the notion that public health competed with other priorities. This study aims to examine the factors driving distrust and competing priorities in Florida, and potential pathways to overcome these issues. METHODS: We conducted an additional analyses of qualitative data from our original study in

National burden of Ebola virus disease in Democratic Republic of the Congo: the urgency to act.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) has long been a major public health concern for Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). First identified in DR Congo in 1976, the country has witnessed more than 25 outbreaks of this deadly disease, which has a case fatality rate of nearly 90% and manifesting with symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, stomachache and haemorrhagic fever. African fruit bats have been speculated to be the reservoir of this virus. DR Congo is currently facing another EVD outbreak simultaneously with other communicable diseases, rendering it vulnerable to a shortage of medical and par

Modern-Day Relics of Psychiatry.

Constantly shifting cultural views influence public perceptions of psychiatric diagnoses, sometimes accommodated by changes in diagnostic terminology. Evolving scientific knowledge of the era is at times used to justify and support mental illnesses. Too often, however, remasked nomenclatures fail to alter social stigma, in part because political arguments are used. Scientific validations of variant behaviors as symptoms with a pathologic status are unfortunately overshadowed. Examples of cultural bias effects on recurring diagnostic challenges illustrate a need for scientific validation. Renam

Party identification and public attitudes toward raw milk, water fluoridation, and acetaminophen use.

BACKGROUND: Fluoridation of drinking water, milk pasteurization, and acetaminophen use in pregnancy have become highly visible and controversial public health issues. METHODS: In September and October 2025, we fielded a national survey to examine the beliefs about and support for policies regulating water fluoridation, raw milk, and acetaminophen use in the United States. We used descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression to analyze the data. RESULTS: We found that about half of the participants believed fluoridated tap water was safe to drink, that raw milk was not as safe

Difficult Health Conversations: Dilemmas That Vaccinated People in the United States Experienced When Discussing COVID-19 Vaccination with Hesitant Family Members.

During the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, public health officials in the United States called upon vaccinated individuals to encourage reluctant family members to get vaccinated. Due in part to the COVID-19 pandemic becoming politically polarized, encouraging a loved one to get vaccinated could create a difficult conversation that was emotionally charged and accentuated ingroup/outgroup dynamics. Using normative rhetorical theory as a theoretical lens, this study investigates the dilemmas individuals describe when discussing how to talk with family members about getting vaccinated. Qualitative

The "Western disease": Autism and Somali parents' embodied health movements.

There is some statistical evidence indicating that Somali refugees and immigrants have high rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Somalis in North America call autism the "Western disease" because there is no word for autism in the Somali language and because many believe it does not exist in Somalia. In Toronto, Somali parents have forged an "epistemic community," united around a coherent theory of the development of autism, its defining features, and most successful therapies. They work together with researchers to support the theory that gut bacteria is a causal factor for the developmen

The Mental Health of Children and Parents Detained on Christmas Island: Secondary Analysis of an Australian Human Rights Commission Data Set.

This paper describes secondary analysis of previously unreported data collected during the 2014 Australian Human Rights Commission Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention. The aim was to examine the mental health of asylum-seeking parents and children during prolonged immigration detention and to consider the human rights implications of the findings. The average period of detention was seven months. Data includes 166 Kessler 10 Scales (K10) and 70 Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQ) for children aged 3-17 and parental concerns about 48 infants. Extremely high rates of menta

Narrative Matters: Between hope and cynicism - competing narratives and the moral economy of child and adolescent psychiatry.

BACKGROUND: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) are currently marked by a paradox: growing public recognition of youth mental health difficulties coincides with increasingly fragile and underresourced services. Beyond organisational strain, the field is shaped by competing narratives about its mission and limits (hopeful progressivism which emphasises innovation, early intervention and developmental plasticity; on the other, defensive pessimism which foregrounds chronicity, clinical realism and institutional constraint. AIMS: To examine how these competing narratives operate w

Water insecurity: An agenda for research and call to action for human biology.

Water insecurity-the lack of adequate and safe water for a healthy and productive life-is one of the greatest threats facing humans in the coming century. By 2030, half of the world is expected to be living in water-stressed conditions, given current climate change scenarios. A key goal of the UN Water Action Decade and Sustainable Development Goal 6 is to improve water security for the three billion people globally affected, but the future looks grim. For many communities, from Cape Town, South Africa to Flint, United States, the imagined dystopian future of severe water shortages has already

INTRODUCTION: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) people’s health is a public health issue impacting a significant portion of the population. Health-related decisions are made in an artificially uncertain and contentious climate in which knowledge plays a central role. Rapid developments in the field, along with the increasing politicization of language in research, contribute to the proliferation of terms that shape and complicate bibliographic searches. METHOD: This study of the journal Santé publique focuses on publications available online since 2001 that include conte

Assessing factors of COVID-19 outcomes in the United States based on the ecological framework of population health.

Outcomes associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in the United States (U.S.), particularly in terms of infection rates and deaths due to viral infection, has been and continues to be widely discussed. The current study utilized several U.S. county-level datasets representing over 30 predictive variables of the ecological framework of health, a model that includes measures of culture, politics, policy, socioeconomics, lifestyle behaviors, and both chronic disease risk factors and diagnoses. A non-linear artificial intelligence statistical approach was used to assess the

The Relationship Between Political Affiliation, Perceptions of Science and Scientists, and Perceived Safety and Effectiveness of the MMR, Flu, and COVID-19 Vaccines: United States, 2024.

Objectives. To examine the associations between political party identification, perceptions of science and scientists, and perceived safety and effectiveness of the measles, mumps, and rubella, flu, and COVID-19 vaccines. Methods. We used multiple regression analyses to examine survey data collected in November 2024 from a national probability sample of 1763 US adults. We measured perceptions of science and scientists using the Factors Assessing Science's Self-Presentation (FASS) scale, which assesses beliefs that scientists are credible, prudent, and unbiased and that science is beneficial an

Stalled Progress in HIV Prevention for Trans Women in San Francisco: A Call for Upstream Solutions and Renewed Support for Public Health and Human Rights.

We compare indicators of HIV prevention and care in two rounds of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance for transgender women (NHBS-Trans) in San Francisco. NHBS-Trans recruited 201 trans women in 2019/20 and 339 in 2023/2024 through peer referral methods. The proportion of trans women on ART significantly improved from 90% to 98% ([Formula: see text]=6.33, p = 0.018) over this time period. Additionally, methamphetamine use decreased overall from 32% to 22% (χ2 = 7.08, p = 0.008). Among trans women living with HIV, the proportion reporting injection drug use also decreased from 22% to 11% (χ2 =

"I Don't Feel Like a Hero": Frontline Healthcare Providers' Social Media Storytelling during COVID-19.

While much of the world watched rising numbers of COVID-19 infections and deaths from the safety of their homes, frontline healthcare providers (FHPs) were face-to-face with a virus that threatened the globe. While our social, political, and economic structures were ill-equipped to handle a global health crisis and our politicization of the disease nurtured divisive dialogues, FHPs pushed their own bodies and minds to unimaginable limits as they witnessed and fought the realities of COVID-19 to care for patients. During and between their extended shifts, FHPs shared their stories on social med

The Cholera Epidemic in Zimbabwe, 2008-2009: A Review and Critique of the Evidence.

The 2008-2009 Zimbabwe cholera epidemic resulted in 98,585 reported cases and caused more than 4,000 deaths. In this study, we used a mixed-methods approach that combined primary qualitative data from a 2008 Physicians for Human Rights-led investigation with a systematic review and content analysis of the scientific literature. Our initial investigation included semi-structured interviews of 92 key informants, which we supplemented with reviews of the social science and human rights literature, as well as international news reports. Our systematic review of the scientific literature retrieved

The influence of politics on psychological interventions for pediatric gender dysphoria.

The care of children and youth presenting with gender dysphoria has recently changed from watchful waiting and psychotherapeutic exploration to primarily an affirmative medical pathway involving social transition, puberty suppression, cross-sex hormones and surgery. This shift has occurred alongside a rapid increase in referrals and has been reinforced by political and legal frameworks that strongly favor gender-affirming care (GAC) while restricting alternative therapeutic approaches. This article critically examines the influence of legislation on clinical practice for gender-distressed yout

Perceptions of yellow fever emergency mass vaccinations among vulnerable groups in Uganda: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever (YF), a mosquito-borne viral hemorrhagic fever, is endemic in Uganda and causes frequent outbreaks. A total of 1.6 million people were vaccinated during emergency mass immunization campaigns in 2011 and 2016. This study explored local perceptions of YF emergency mass immunization among vulnerable groups to inform future vaccination campaigns. METHODOLOGY: In this qualitative study, we conducted 43 semi-structured interviews, 4 focus group discussions, and 10 expert interviews with 76 participants. Data were collected in six affected districts with emergency mass vacci

The uses of (mis)information in education policy: introduction to the special issue.

This special issue of Evidence & Policy focuses on growing concerns around misinformation, disinformation and research misuse in education policy. This introduction to the issue shows how education policy is a unique and particularly vulnerable information ecosystem because it is deeply contested, highly politicized, often structurally decentralized and susceptible to intermediaries who frame problems, package evidence and influence policy discourse. Drawing on scholarship across multiple fields - including misinformation studies, policy studies and education research - our introduction highli

Contact, cognition, and taiwanese youths' attitudes toward local and Chinese culture.

Classical contact theory posits that intergroup contact can reduce perceived threats and hostility between in-groups and out-groups, thereby laying the foundation for the formation of subsequent friendships and deeper forms of identification. However, in a cross-Strait context that is highly politicized and in which exchanges are deliberately obstructed by the Democratic Progressive Party, whether contact experience alone is sufficient to trigger changes in Taiwanese youths' attitudes toward Chinese culture remains an open question requiring further examination. Drawing on data from the 2018 T
