Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry for the Analysis of Selected Emerging Brominated Flame Retardants in Foods.

Emerging brominated flame retardants (eBFRs) other than polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and their derivatives in foods have been in focus in recent years due to their increasing production volumes, indefinite information on toxicities and the lack of data on occurrence in environments, foods as well as humans. In this study, gas chromatography was coupled to an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (APGC-MS/MS) for the analysis of six eBFRs in pork, chicken, egg, milk and fish. A short section of unpacked capillary column coup

Immunotoxic and hematotoxic effects of occupational exposures.

The toxic effects of environmental factors at work places on the hematopoietic and immune systems are of basic importance due to the time of exposure, lasting on average 8 hours daily during one week. Porphyrinurias and porphyrias have been observed after exposure to hexachlorobenzene, chlorinated dibenzodioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls, polybrominated biphenyls, vinyl chloride and lead. Aplastic anemia may occur after exposure to benzene, pesticides, arsenic, cadmium and copper compounds. Megaloblastic anemia has been noted in subjects exposed to arsenic, chlordane, benzene and nitrous oxid

Biodegradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium in the presence of Cd2.

Aerobic biodegradation of 2,2',4,4'-tetrabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-47) by Phanerochaete chrysosporium in the presence of Cd2+ was investigated in this study. The results showed that P. chrysosporium could effectively degrade BDE-47, and its extracellular enzyme played an important role in the process of decomposition. BDE-47 biodegradation by fungi was more tolerant than extracellular enzyme in the presence of Cd2+. Also, both of the activity of two typical enzymes, MnP and LiP, descended with ascended Cd2+ concentration. Based on the four mono-hydroxylated PBDEs (5-OH-BDE-47, 4'-OH-BDE-1

Toxicity and accumulation of 6-OH-BDE-47 and newly synthesized 6,6'-diOH-BDE-47 in early life-stages of Zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Dihydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (diOH-PBDEs) appear to be natural products or metabolites of PBDEs in some marine organisms, yet its toxicity is still largely unknown. With a newly lab-synthesized diOH-PBDE, 6,6'-dihydroxy-2,2',4'4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (6,6'-diOH-BDE-47) in hand, the present study has provided the first data set to compare 6-hydroxy-2,2',4'4'- tetrabromodiphenyl ether (6-OH-BDE-47) and 6,6'-diOH-BDE-47 for their acute toxicity and accumulation, and thyroid hormone levels in treated zebrafish larvae. By real time-PCR technique, transcripts of hypothalamic-pit

Anaerobic degradation of deca-brominated diphenyl ether contaminated in products: Effect of temperature on degradation characteristics.

In this study, a 200-day deca-brominated diphenyl ether (deca-BDE) degradation activity experiment was carried out, using consumer-use curtain material as the substrate. During the degradation process, polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) products with fewer bromine atoms were gradually generated by the debromination of deca-BDE. The influences of temperature, initial substrate dosing mass, and pH were also investigated. Interestingly, thermophilic conditions proved more beneficial for deca-BDE degradation than mesophilic conditions. The results also demonstrate that the debromination rate inc

Persistent organic pollutants and mercury in dead and dying glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) at Bjørnøya (Svalbard).

Dead and dying glaucous gulls (Larus hyperboreus) were collected on Bjørnøya in the Barents Sea in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Autopsies of the seabirds only explained a clear cause of death for three (14%) of the 21 birds. A total of 71% of the birds were emaciated. Liver and brain samples were analysed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and mercury (Hg). High levels of SigmaOCPs, SigmaPCBs, SigmaPBDEs and alpha-HBCD were found in liver and brain. Compared to the dead and dying glaucous gulls

Oxidation Kinetics of Bromophenols by Nonradical Activation of Peroxydisulfate in the Presence of Carbon Nanotube and Formation of Brominated Polymeric Products.

This work demonstrated that bromophenols (BrPs) could be readily oxidized by peroxydisulfate (PDS) activated by a commercial carbon nanotube (CNT), while furfuryl alcohol (a chemical probe for singlet oxygen (1O2)) was quite refractory. Results obtained by radical quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy further confirmed the involvement of nonradical PDS-CNT complexes rather than 1O2. Bicarbonate and chloride ion exhibited negligible impacts on BrPs degradation by the PDS/CNT system, while a significant inhibitory effect

Thyroid disruption: mechanism and clinical implications in human health.

Exposure to specific environmental toxins, including polychlorinated biphenyls, dioxins, phthalates, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and other halogenated organochlorines, has been shown to interfere with the production, transportation, and metabolism of thyroid hormones by a variety of mechanisms. A broad range of chemicals, with structural similarity to thyroid hormone, have been shown to bind to thyroid receptors with both agonist and antagonist effects on thyroid hormone signaling. The incidence of thyroid disease in the United States, particularly for thyroid cancer and thyroid au

Role of Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in the Pathogenesis of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Comprehensive Review.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the most common liver disorder, affecting around 25% of the population worldwide. It is a complex disease spectrum, closely linked with other conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome, which may increase liver-related mortality. In light of this, numerous efforts have been carried out in recent years in order to clarify its pathogenesis and create new prevention strategies. Currently, the essential role of environmental pollutants in NAFLD development is recognized. Particularly, endo

Potential obesogenic effects of TBBPA and its alternatives TBBPS and TCBPA revealed by metabolic perturbations in human hepatoma cells.

To date, increasing numbers of studies have shown the obesogenic effects of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). Tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) and tetrachlorobisphenol A (TCBPA) are two common alternatives to TBBPA, and their environmental distributions are frequently reported. However, their toxicity and the associated potential health risks are poorly documented. Herein, we performed untargeted metabolomics to study the metabolic perturbations in HepG2 cells exposed to TBBPA and its alternatives. Consequently, no loss of cellular viability was observed in HepG2 cells exposed to 0.1 μmol/L and 1 μm

GO accelerate iron oxides formation and tetrabromobisphenol A removal enhancement in the GO loaded NZVI system.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is an emerging persistent organic pollutant, which is very difficult to remove by common methods. In this study, the GO-load nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI/GO) was fabricated and optimized to improve the reaction rate and removal efficiency for TBBPA reliably and efficiently. The results showed that GO-load significantly reduced the self-aggregation of NZVI and the aggregate size decreased by 50.00% (1400-700 nm). Meanwhile, GO significantly improved the reaction rate kobs (1.11 ± 0.11 h-1) of TBBPA in the NZVI/GO system compared to the NZVI (0.40 ± 0.08 h-1) sy

Identification of Novel Brominated Compounds in Flame Retarded Plastics Containing TBBPA by Combining Isotope Pattern and Mass Defect Cluster Analysis.

The study of not only main flame retardants but also of related degradation products or impurities has gained attention in the last years and is relevant to assess the safety of our consumer products and the emission of potential contaminants into the environment. In this study, we show that plastics casings of electric/electronic devices containing TBBPA contain also a complex mixture of related brominated chemicals. These compounds were most probably coming from impurities, byproducts, or degradation products of TBBPA and TBBPA derivatives. A total of 14 brominated compounds were identified
