Lability of toxic elements in Submarine Tailings Disposal: The relationship between metal fractionation and metal uptake by sandworms (Alitta virens).

Mine tailings from the iron ore mine Sydvaranger Gruve have been deposited in Bøkfjorden, Northern Norway, for >40 years. This study investigates the environmental impacts of submarine tailings disposal one year after the cessation of the mine by combining analyses of total metal concentrations (nitric acid digestion) and metal fractionation patterns (sequential extraction procedure) of sediments with the metal uptake (bioassays) by sandworms (Alitta virens) exposed to Bøkfjorden sediment. The analyses focused on metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, Zn) in sediment cores retrieved from a horizo

Toward the Origin and Evolution of Unique Echiurid Excretory Organs: New Data From Females of Bonellia viridis.

Echiurids, as nonsegmented annelids, have an excretory system of a special organization. The excretory system of the echiuran worms is known to consist of ultrafiltration zones on blood vessels and anal sacs. Prior to this study, the fine structure of the anal sacs had been described in detail only for Thalassema thalassemum (Thalassematinae). In contrast, the more complex anal sacs of Bonelliinae, which contain additional structural elements such as tubules, remained unexplored. This study describes the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of the anal sacs of Bonellia viridis Rolando, 1822

An integrated approach to characterize deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (NW Mediterranean).

The aim of this study was to evaluate deep sediment toxicity in Genoa submarine canyons (Northwestern Mediterranean), for the first time, by using an integrated approach that combined chemistry and ecotoxicology. Sediments were collected from the main submarine canyons in the Gulf of Genoa (Polcevera and Bisagno) and along the adjacent Western Open Slope. A multi-endpoint ecotoxicological approach was taken by exposing two crustacean larvae (Amphibalanus amphitrite and Artemia sp.). Lethal and sub-lethal responses (mortality, swimming behavior) were investigated. Chemical analysis showed that

Biochemical and behavioural responses of the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor to cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QDs): waterborne and dietary exposure.

Cadmium sulfide (CdS) quantum dots are widely used in medical imaging. The aim of this study was to examine toxicity effects of CdS engineered nanoparticles (CdS NPs) compared to soluble Cd, on marine ragworms (Hediste diversicolor) exposed for 14 d to these contaminants (10 μg Cd L(-1)) in seawater or via their food (contaminated worm tissue). In our experimental media, Dynamic Light Scattering studies showed that the majority of CdS remained in the nanoscale (1-10 nm) with the exception of few aggregates (100-300 nm). Labile Cd fractions released from CdS NPs were estimated by diffusive grad

Biomonitoring of thallium availability in two estuaries of southwest England.

Thallium is a highly toxic metal whose biogeochemical behaviour in the marine environment is poorly understood. We measured Tl in sediments, macroalgae (Fucus vesiculosus and Fucus ceranoides) and deposit-feeding invertebrates (Hediste diversicolor, Arenicola marina and Scrobicularia plana) from two estuaries of south west England (Plym and Fal) draining mineralised catchments. In the Plym, and for a given sample type, concentrations of Tl were rather invariant between sample locations and averaged about 500 μg kg(-1) for sediment, 30 μg kg(-1) for macroalgae and 10 μg kg(-1) for the invertebr

Anomalously slow cyanide binding to Glycera dibranchiata monomer methemoglobin component II: implication for the equilibrium constant.

In comparison to sperm whale metmyoglobin, metleghemoglobin a, methemoglobins, and heme peroxidases, the purified Glycera dibranchiata monomer methemoglobin component II exhibits anomalously slow cyanide ligation kinetics. For the component II monomer methemoglobin this reaction has been studied under pseudo-first-order conditions at pH 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0, employing 100-250-fold mole excesses of potassium cyanide at each pH. At 20 degrees C, with micromolar protein concentrations, kobsd varies between 9.11 x 10(-5) s-1 at pH 6.0, 100-fold KCN mole excess, and 1.12 x 10(-2) s-1 at pH 9.0, 2

Mössbauer studies of the ferryl, ferrous and ferric states of dehaloperoxidase from A. ornata.

Dehaloperoxidase (DHP) is a multi-functional catalytic globin from the marine worm A. ornata, whose physiological functions include oxygen transport and oxidation of toxic substrates present in its habitat. In the Fe(III) state, DHPA has an isomer shift of 0.42 mm/s, characteristic for high-spin heme proteins. Changes in pH have subtle effects on the electronic structure of DHP in the Fe(III) state detectable in the high-field spectra, which show a pH-dependent mixture of species with different zero-field splittings between 5 and 18 cm-1. The short-lived intermediate obtained by direct reactio

Three-step effluent chlorination increases disinfection efficiency and reduces DBP formation and toxicity.

Chlorination is extensively applied for disinfecting sewage effluents, but it unintentionally generates disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Using seawater for toilet flushing introduces a high level of bromide into domestic sewage. Chlorination of sewage effluent rich in bromide causes the formation of brominated DBPs. The objectives of achieving a disinfection goal, reducing disinfectant consumption and operational costs, as well as diminishing adverse effects to aquatic organisms in receiving water body remain a challenge in sewage treatment. In this study, we have demonstrated that, with the sa

Seagrasses are negatively affected by organic matter loading and Arenicola marina activity in a laboratory experiment.

When two ecosystem engineers share the same natural environment, the outcome of their interaction will be unclear if they have contrasting habitat-modifying effects (e.g., sediment stabilization vs. sediment destabilization). The outcome of the interaction may depend on local environmental conditions such as season or sediment type, which may affect the extent and type of habitat modification by the ecosystem engineers involved. We mechanistically studied the interaction between the sediment-stabilizing seagrass Zostera noltii and the bioturbating and sediment-destabilizing lugworm Arenicola m

The polychaete worm Nereis diversicolor increases mercury lability and methylation in intertidal mudflats.

The polychaete worm Nereis diversicolor engineers its environment by creating oxygenated burrows in anoxic intertidal sediments. The authors carried out a laboratory microcosm experiment to test the impact of polychaete burrowing and feeding activity on the lability and methylation of mercury in sediments from the Bay of Fundy, Canada. The concentration of labile inorganic mercury and methylmercury in burrow walls was elevated compared to worm-free sediments. Mucus secretions and organic detritus in worm burrows increased labile mercury concentrations. Worms decreased sulfide concentrations, w

Macrofaunal Distribution, Diversity, and Its Ecological Interaction at the Cold Seep Site of Krishna-Godavari Basin, East Coast of India.

Cold seeps are characterized by typical endemic communities with associated microorganisms that depend on sulfide, methane, reduced nitrogenous compounds, and metals as electron donors for their survival through chemosynthesis. The discovery of an active cold seep site in January 2018 in the Krishna-Godavari (K-G) basin of Bay of Bengal was followed by a transit cruise in March 2018 to investigate the distribution and diversity of macrofauna. Further, the ambient sediment and pore water biochemistry were estimated to understand its relationship with macrofauna and the microbial associates of t

Amino acid chemistry and post-translational modifications underlying marine adhesive proteins: Biochemical insights for designing underwater adhesives.

Underwater adhesion remains a complex challenge due to the interference of water with traditional bonding mechanisms. Marine organisms, such as mussels, sandcastle worms, and barnacles, have evolved specialized adhesive proteins that overcome these limitations through functional amino acid motifs. This review highlights how post-translationally derived amino acid motifs, such as 3,4-dihydroxylphenylalanine (DOPA) and phosphoserine, drive interfacial adhesion and the curing process through interfacial binding, metal coordination, and crosslinking. Alongside these, canonical amino acids, such as

Identification of a novel CYP4V gene in the polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis: transcriptional comparison with a CYP4B gene exposed to PAHs.

Polychaete worms can biotransform polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environments, and the cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme plays an important role in this process. Herein, a novel cytochrome P450 gene was identified and characterized from the polychaete worm Perinereis aibuhitensis. The full-length cDNA, which is named CYP4V82, is 1709 bp encoding a protein of 509 amino acids and has high similarity to CYP4V. The expression levels of CYP4V82 and CYP4BB4 (a CYP gene identified from P. aibuhitensis in a previous study, Chen et al. Mar Pollut Bull 64:1782-1788, 2012) exposure to various conc

Sphaerodoridae (Annelida) from Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef, Australia, including the description of two new species and reproductive notes.

Sphaerodorids are scarce at Lizard Island archipelago and other localities in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Intensive collections at a variety of habitats within the Lizard Island archipelago over the last four decades have resulted in a total of just 11 specimens. Nevertheless, they represent two new species and a new record for Lizard Island. Sphaerodoropsis aurantica n. sp. is characterised by nine longitudinal rows of sessile and spherical dorsal macrotubercles, arranged in a single transverse row per segment; parapodia with around 10 spherical papillae; and compound chaetae with thin

[Research advance in characteristics and mechanisms of Nereis diversicolor endurance against environmental pollution].

Nereis diversicolor is an ecologically keystone species of invertebrate that lives in the mud of marine-terrestrial interlaced zone. This species can accumulate a large number of toxic heavy metals such as copper, cadmium and zinc in its body, and thus, shows a high endurance against toxic heavy metals. This paper summarized the latest research advance at home and abroad in the characteristics and mechanisms of N. diversicolor endurance against heavy metals and organic contaminants. N. diversicolor could achieve its heavy metals- endurance through several eco-chemical processes, e.g., mucus se

Induction of larval settlement in the serpulid polychaete Hydroides elegans (Haswell): role of bacterial extracellular polymers.

Larval settlement in the marine polychaete Hydroides elegans is effectively mediated upon contact with the surface of marine bacterial films. Using the bacterium Roseobacter litoralis as a model strain, the effect of bacterial extracellular polymers (exopolymers) on larval settlement of H. elegans was investigated. Bioassays with exopolymer fractions dissociated from bacterial films evoked the initial stages of the larval settlement process, i.e. larvae slowed down, secreted a mucous thread and crawled over the surface. This response is typical of larvae that encounter an attractive bacterial

It was analysed, which "ecological niche" or microbiotop (= microhabitat) is occupied by this or that species of symbiotic (parasitic) copepods in organisms of different groups invertebrate-hosts. The assumption lying in a basis of the given analysis means that each group of hosts may give to cohabitants only certain variants of microbiotopes independently on the general morphological structure and life mode of hosts.
