Selective splenic artery embolization or use of polyglycolic acid mesh in children with severe splenic trauma.

Children with splenic trauma are managed conservatively in most circumstances, and the need for surgical intervention is very rare. When surgical exploration in mandatory, splenic preservation is a worthwhile objective, using various suture methods, biomaterials, or resorbable prostheses. We present our experience over the past year with 5 severe splenic injuries. Three of these patients were treated operatively with a resorbable mesh, while the other two were managed percutaneously by selective embolization of the splenic artery under fluoroscopic control. We describe the embolization techniq

[Reversible fixation of the small intestine for minimizing radiation damage with polyglycolic acid mesh--initial experiences].

In ten patients with tumors of the small pelvis the bowel was fixed to the upper abdomen by use of Polyglycolic acid mesh (Dexon) to minimize radiation associated small bowel injury. In one case formation of abscess was seen ducto suture dehiscence of the rectal stump which could successfully be handled by lavage. No severe disturbance of bowel motility was seen. By sonographic and barium controls it could demonstrated that it was possible to keep the small intestine above the radiation fields as long as it was necessary for radiation treatment. After 3-4 months it could be demonstrated that t

Evaluation of polyglycolic acid as an animal-free biomaterial for three-dimensional culture of human endometrial cells.

OBJECTIVE: Animal-free scaffolds have emerged as a potential foundation for consistent, chemically defined, and low-cost materials. Because of its good potential for high biocompatibility with reproductive tissues and well-characterized scaffold design, we investigated whether polyglycolic acid (PGA) could be used as an animal-free scaffold instead of natural fibrin-agarose, which has been used successfully for three-dimensional human endometrial cell culture. METHODS: Isolated primary endometrial cells was cultured on fibrin-agarose and PGA polymers and evaluated various design parameters, s

A clinical study of efficacy of polyglycolic acid patch in surgery for pneumothorax:a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: A polyglycolic acid (PGA) patch is often used in pulmonary bullae resection, but consensus has not been reached on its effect on patient recovery. The aim of the study is to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies of polyglycolic acid for bullectomy. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was performed using ScienceDirect, EMBASE, Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Clinical trials that compared PGA versus non-PGA for bullectomy were selected. The clinical endpoints included postoperative recurrence, average postoperative ai

[The use of a polyglycolic acid membrane in the reconstruction of the orbital floor and in loss of bone substance in the maxillofacial region].

The use of a new alloplastic biodegradable implant called BIOFIX made of polyglycolate is described. We used it to cover bone defects in maxillo-facial surgery, principally for orbital floor restoration and frontal sinus repair, with very good results. It is an excellent material of temporary support and guidance during the healing period and new bone formation. However, it will be necessary to wait for the results of a multicentric european study to confirm its superiority in maxillofacial surgery.

Polyglycolic Acid Sheet Application to Refractory Delayed Bleeding After Rectal Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection: A Case Report.

A man in his 50s underwent endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for a rectal tumor measuring 28 mm. He was not taking any antithrombotic medication. On the third, 11th, 18th, and 24th days after the procedure, bleeding was observed from different areas of the ulcer bed margin and was managed with hemostatic forceps. Despite epithelization and ulcer healing, delayed bleeding recurred, with the fourth episode being severe, marked by significant bleeding and a decrease in serum hemoglobin level. Although clip closure of the ulcer bed and the application of PuraStat were attempted, they failed t

Prospects of polyglycolic acid sheets for the treatment of esophageal stricture after esophageal endoscopic submucosal dissection.

Esophageal cancer is the seventh most common type of cancer and the sixth leading cause of cancer -related mortality worldwide. Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is widely used for the resection of early esophageal cancer. However, post-ESD esophageal stricture is a common long-term complication, which requires attention. Patients with post-ESD esophageal stricture often experience dysphagia and require multiple dilatations, which greatly affects their quality of life and increases healthcare costs. Therefore, to manage post-ESD esophageal stricture, researchers are actively exploring var

Chitosan/polyglycolic acid nerve grafts for axon regeneration from prolonged axotomized neurons to chronically denervated segments.

Peripheral nerve regeneration for long-term delayed injuries is usually unsatisfied. Here we attempted to use a chitosan/polyglycolic acid (PGA) artificial nerve graft to bridge a long-term delayed 10-mm defect in SD rats based on the previous studies on the graft used for immediate repair of 30-mm-long dog sciatic nerve defects and for clinical treatment of a 35-mm-long median nerve defect at elbow of a human patient. In this study, for experimental groups, the rat sciatic nerve had been transected leaving a 10-mm defect, which was maintained for 3 or 6 months before implantation with the chi

Prevention of postoperative air leakage from lungs using a purified human collagen membrane-polyglycolic acid sheet.

BACKGROUND: Human amnion has useful biomedical applications because it contains a large amount of human collagen fibers. We prepared purified human collagen membrane (HCM) from human amnion and used it to develop a new sheet by combining it with synthetic bioabsorbable polyglycolic acid (PGA) mesh. We evaluated its efficacy in preventing air leakage from the lungs of dogs. METHODS: In 20 dogs, HCM-PGA sheet (n = 5), sheets using fibrin glue with a separate application method (n = 5), a mixed application method (n = 5), and fibrin glue alone (n = 5), were used as dressing materials after parti

Sutureless functional end-to-end anastomosis using a linear stapler with polyglycolic acid felt for intestinal anastomoses.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal anastomosis remains associated with a considerable burden of morbidity and, in some cases, mortality. Functional end-to-end anastomosis, whilst extremely efficient, is vulnerable to increased intestinal pressure in the immediate postoperative period, which may predispose to development of anastomotic leakage or bleeding. Therefore, there is a requirement for new techniques that facilitate safe and efficacious anastomotic procedures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study examined the clinical application of functional end-to-end anastomosis with a stapler that automati

A new method to close an intestinal wall defect using fibrin glue and polyglycolic acid felt sealant.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to propose an alternative method of suture closure for an intestinal wall defect using 2 absorbable materials. METHODS: An oval intestinal wall defect was created in the duodenum, ileum, or colon of rabbits. The defect was first covered by polyglycolic felt, which was then completely covered by fibrin glue to make a fibrin glue and polyglycolic acid felt (FGPAF) sealant without any suture procedures. The rabbits with a simple suture closure for the defect were used as controls. The bursting pressure of the treated intestine was measured, and macro- and microscopic ob
