It is crucial that experiments dealing with plant-pathogen interactions are robust and reproducible. For evaluating the disease-resistance ability of a host plant against any pathogen, controlled conditions are a prerequisite that cannot be obtained with soil-based systems. Variation in environmental conditions during challenge inoculation of a pathogen, when performed in fields or a polyhouse, may lead to spurious results. This is of particular importance when dealing with disease resistance in a fruit tree like pomegranate, as determined after years of research efforts. Due to lack of unifor

Regular consumption of pomegranate, a polyphenol-rich fruit, is associated with multiple health benefits. As polyphenols reach the colon, they interact with the gut microbiota, influencing both its composition and metabolic activity. This study investigated the impact of a one-week supplementation with two doses of the commercial pomegranate extract Oxylent® (1.3 and 2.6 g/day) on gut microbiota and metabolite production using the SHIME® system. Bacterial metabolite production, including short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), urolithins, succinate, and lactate, was assessed using chromatographic and

This study aims to produce beneficial products with pomegranate peel waste through pyrolysis. For this purpose, the usability of the liquid product as a biofuel and the solid product as an adsorbent for dye removal was investigated. To characterize the bio-oil and biochar produced under the best pyrolysis conditions, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), calorific value, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were conducted. When we examine the FT-IR spectrum of the bio-oil, the presence of phenol,

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) is frequently used as an animal model for human allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). Diets of pomegranate polyphenols (PPs) or soy isoflavones (SIs) each alleviated CHS symptoms; however, the effect of diets containing a mixture of PPs and SIs on CHS is unclear. We investigated the CHS-inhibitory effects of diets supplemented with a mixture of PPs and SIs at human physiologically relevant doses. Consuming the mixture of PPs and SIs attenuated ear swelling and reduced infiltration of Gr-1-positive cells. Ear swelling decreased in the PP and SI-treated mice compared

Folk medicine suggests that pomegranate (peels, seeds and leaves) has anti-inflammatory properties; however, the precise mechanisms by which this plant affects the inflammatory process remain unclear. Herein, we analyzed the anti-inflammatory properties of a hydroalcoholic extract prepared from pomegranate leaves using a rat model of lipopolysaccharide-induced acute peritonitis. Male Wistar rats were treated with either the hydroalcoholic extract, sodium diclofenac, or saline, and 1 h later received an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharides. Saline-injected animals (i. p.) were used

Nephrotoxicity is a major complication of gentamicin (GEN), which is widely used in the treatment of severe Gram-negative infections. Reactive oxygen species are important mediators of GEN-induced nephrotoxicity. Because of the strong antioxidant properties of pomegranate extract (PE), we evaluated the protective effect of PE against GEN-induced nephrotoxicity. Thirty-two adult male rats were randomly divided into four equal groups: (1) controls; (2) treated with GEN for 14 consecutive days (100 mg/kg/day); (3) treated with GEN plus distilled water; and (4) treated with GEN plus PE (100 μL). Pomegranate, rich in bioactive compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids, has been studied for its potential lipid-modulating effects, yet evidence remains inconsistent. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the impact of pomegranate consumption on plasma lipid profiles by synthesizing data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Following PRISMA guidelines, 37 RCTs (n = 2695 participants) were included after searching Scopus and MEDLINE databases. Studies assessed pomegranate products (juice, extract, seed oil) administered orally for ≥ 7 days, with lipid parameters,

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA), are characterized by chronic inflammation and oxidative stress, leading to joint destruction and disability. Conventional treatments, while effective, often present residual disease activity and adverse effects, prompting interest in complementary interventions. Pomegranate (Punica granatum), rich in bioactive polyphenols such as punicalagins and ellagitannins, has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that may benefit patients with rheumatic diseases.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically

ATP-binding cassette subfamily G (ABCG) proteins play important roles in plant growth and development by transporting metabolites across cell membranes. To date, the genetic characteristics and potential functions of pomegranate ABCG proteins (PgrABCGs) have remained largely unknown. In this study, we found that 47 PgrABCGs were divided into five groups according to a phylogenetic analysis; groups I, II, III, and IV members are half-size proteins, and group V members are full-size proteins. PgrABCG14, PgrABCG21, and PgrABCG47 were highly expressed in the inner seed coat but had very low expres

Agricultural productivity of pomegranate can be enhanced by identifying the crop-associated microbial diversity in the rhizosphere region with respect to plant growth promoters and other beneficial organisms. Traditional culture methods have limitations in microbial screening as only 1-2% of these organisms can be cultured. In the present study, 16S rRNA amplicon-based metagenomics approach using MinION Oxford Nanopore platform was employed to explore the microbial diversity in the rhizosphere of pomegranate Bhagwa variety, across variable soil depths from 0 to 5 cms (R2), 5-10 cms (R4) and 10

Melasma and skin cancer require effective and safe topical treatments. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential cytotoxic and antioxidant effects attributed to exposure to ellagic acid (EA) and pomegranate oil (PO) using human keratinocytes (HaCaT) and melanoma cell lines (A375 and B16F10). Cell viability assay (MTT) demonstrated that EA and PO (5% or 10%) were not cytotoxic to HaCaT cells at 24 hr, but induced significant time-dependent cytotoxicity in melanoma cells after 72 hr. In DCFH-DA assay, PO exhibited greater potential in mitigating production of reactive oxygen species

The outbreak of rabies virus (RABV) in Asia and Africa has attracted widespread concern due to its 100% mortality rate, and RABV detection is crucial to its diagnosis and treatment. Herein, we report a sensitive and reliable strategy for the dual-modal RABV detection using pomegranate-shaped dendritic silica nanospheres fabricated with densely incorporated quantum dots (QDs) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled antibody. The immunoassay involves the specific interaction between virus and nanospheres-conjugated antibody coupled with robust fluorescence signal originating from QDs and naked-

Mercuric chloride (HgCL2) is an environmental and industrial toxicant that affects many tissues. Considering oxidative stress is an important component of mercury induced hepatotoxicity, antioxidants are expected to play a protective role against it. The present study was designed to investigate the probable effects of pomegranate seed oil (PSO) on hepatotoxicity induced by HgCL₂, administration in rats. Rats were divided into five groups. Group 1 and 2 received corn oil (1 mL/kg, i.p.) and PSO (0.8 mL/kg, i.p.), respectively. Group 3 was treated with HgCl, (5 mg/kg, i.p.) for 3 days. In group
