Relative leg-to-arm skeletal strength proportions in orangutans by species and sex.

Among extant great apes, orangutans climb most frequently. However, Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) exhibit higher frequencies of terrestrial locomotion than do Sumatran orangutans (Pongo abelii). Variation in long bone cross-sectional geometry is known to reflect differential loading of the limbs. Thus, Bornean orangutans should show greater relative leg-to-arm strength than their Sumatran counterparts. Using skeletal specimens from museum collections, we measured two cross-sectional geometric measures of bone strength: the polar section modulus (Zpol) and the ratio of maximum to minimum

MULTISPECIES SHIGELLA FLEXNERI OUTBREAK IN A ZOOLOGICAL COLLECTION COINCIDING WITH A CLUSTER IN THE LOCAL HUMAN POPULATION.

Shigella flexneri is a nonmotile gram-negative bacillus that affects humans and nonhuman primates. In August 2021, 15 primates at the ABQ BioPark demonstrated clinical signs of Shigella infection: 3 out of 4 Sumatran and hybrid orangutans (Pongo abelii), 6 out of 8 gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), 2 out of 9 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), and 4 out of 4 siamangs (Hylobates syndactylus). Three siamangs and one gorilla succumbed to complications of shigellosis during the initial outbreak and a chimpanzee died 10 mon later. Although it is well documented that Shigella may cause morbidity and mortality

Comparative ontogeny of functional aspects of human cervical vertebrae.

OBJECTIVES: Differences between adult humans and great apes in cervical vertebral morphology are well documented, but the ontogeny of this variation is still largely unexplored. This study examines patterns of growth in functionally relevant features of C1, C2, C4, and C6 in extant humans and apes to understand the development of their disparate morphologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Linear and angular measurements were taken from 530 cervical vertebrae representing 146 individual humans, chimpanzees, gorillas, and orangutans. Specimens were divided into three age-categories based on dental eru

A method for the 3D quantification of enthesis rugosity.

INTRODUCTION: Many methods for evaluating enthesis rugosity are qualitative or fail to capture the entire entheseal surface. Here we present a new 3D method quantifying rugosity across the entire entheseal surface and test it by measuring and comparing the rugosity of the opponens pollicis enthesis to a non-enthesis region on the same bone in a sample of great apes. METHODS: To quantify rugosity, the enthesis area is isolated on high-resolution 3D models and deviations are measured between a best-fit surface and the 3D point cloud representing the enthesis. RESULTS: We demonstrate that this

Dental findings in wild great apes from macerated skull analysis.

Oral health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being in both humans and nonhuman primates. Understanding the oral pathologies and dental conditions in apes can provide valuable insights into their evolutionary history, dietary habits, and overall health. The present study evaluates dental findings in wild great apes from museum specimens to gain insights into the influence of natural nutrition on dental health. Complete macerated skulls of wild, adult great apes from the collection of the Museum of Natural History, Berlin, Germany, were examined. We analyzed skulls of 53 gorillas (Gorilla gor

Preliminary observations on increasing root length during the eruptive phase of tooth development in modern humans and great apes.

Ground sections of incisors, canines, and molars were selected that showed clear incremental markings in root dentine. The sample comprised 98 Homo sapiens, 53 Pan troglodytes, and a more limited combined sample of 51 Gorilla and Pongo sections. Daily rates of root dentine formation, together with the orientation of incremental markings in roots close to the cement-dentine junction (CDJ), were used to calculate root extension rates for the first 10mm of root formed beyond the buccal enamel cervix. Modern human anterior tooth roots showed a more regular pattern of increase in root length than t

Quantification of the dental morphology of orangutans.

Orangutans are believed to have close biological affinities to humans. Teeth being the hardest tissue provide useful information on primate evolution. Furthermore, knowledge of the pulp chamber and root canal morphology is important for dental treatment. A female Bornean orangutan and a Sumatran male orangutan skull were available for this study. Both of their dentitions, comprising 50 teeth, were scanned employing the cone-beam computed tomography for both metrical and nonmetrical analyses. Measurements included tooth and crown length, root length, enamel covered crown height, root canal leng

Fatal metacestode infection in Bornean orangutan caused by unknown Versteria species.

A captive juvenile Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) died from an unknown disseminated parasitic infection. Deep sequencing of DNA from infected tissues, followed by gene-specific PCR and sequencing, revealed a divergent species within the newly proposed genus Versteria (Cestoda: Taeniidae). Versteria may represent a previously unrecognized risk to primate health.

The nasal and paranasal architecture of the Middle Miocene ape Pierolapithecus catalaunicus (primates: Hominidae): phylogenetic implications.

The internal (nasal and paranasal) cranial anatomy of the Middle Miocene (11.9 Ma [millions of years ago]) great ape Pierolapithecus catalaunicus (Hominidae: Dryopithecini) is described on the basis of computed-tomography scans of the holotype specimen (IPS21350), with particular emphasis on its phylogenetic implications. Pierolapithecus displays the following characters: an anteriorly-restricted maxillary sinus that posteriorly spreads towards the ethmoidal area (thus resembling the pongine condition), although being situated well above the molar roots (as in kenyapithecins, other dryopitheci

Rapid development of secondary hyperparathyroidism and fibrous osteodystrophy in a juvenile orangutan.

This study presents a probable case of rapidly-developed fibrous osteodystrophy and secondary hyperparathyroidism in a juvenile wild-caught zoo orangutan, Pongo pygmaeus. Cases of this metabolic disease, associated with captivity in primates, are underreported in non-human Hominidae, and none to the extent of postcranial afflictions. We present the first described case of these metabolic pathologies of a great ape at both the cranial and skeletal levels.

The complete sequence and comparative analysis of ape sex chromosomes.

Apes possess two sex chromosomes-the male-specific Y chromosome and the X chromosome, which is present in both males and females. The Y chromosome is crucial for male reproduction, with deletions being linked to infertility1. The X chromosome is vital for reproduction and cognition2. Variation in mating patterns and brain function among apes suggests corresponding differences in their sex chromosomes. However, owing to their repetitive nature and incomplete reference assemblies, ape sex chromosomes have been challenging to study. Here, using the methodology developed for the telomere-to-telome

Leukocyte migration inhibition detects cross-reacting antigens between cells transformed by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and EBV-like simian viruses.

The leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) technique was used to measure the T cell-mediated immune response of Epstein-Barr-virus (EBV)-seropositive human donors to antigens associated with B cell lines of simian origin, transformed by simian EBV-like viruses, Herpesvirus papio (HVP), H. pan, H. gorilla and H. pongo. Extracts of cell lines carrying three of the four simian viruses (from gorilla, chimpanzee and orangutan) induced a positive LMI response, whereas lines carrying baboon-derived HVP were ineffective. None of the simian virus-transformed lines elicited an LMI reaction in human EBV-se

Relationships between the hard and soft dimensions of the nose in Pan troglodytes and Homo sapiens reveal the positions of the nasal tips of Plio-Pleistocene hominids.

By identifying homogeneity in bone and soft tissue covariation patterns in living hominids, it is possible to produce facial approximation methods with interspecies compatibility. These methods may be useful for producing facial approximations of fossil hominids that are more realistic than currently possible. In this study, we conducted an interspecific comparison of the nasomaxillary region in chimpanzees and modern humans with the aim of producing a method for predicting the positions of the nasal tips of Plio-Pleistocene hominids. We addressed this aim by first collecting and performing re

Suppurative arthritis in an infant orangutan.

A 12-day-old male orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) was removed from its mother because of oral ulcers and reluctance to suckle. Close examination revealed ulcerations extended to the mandibular bone. Staphylococcus aureus was cultured from the oral lesions. Despite intensive antibiotic therapy, the infection progressed to septicemia, with suppurative arthritis of the left coxofemoral and right radiohumeral joints. Treatment included removal of synovial exudate by aspiration, indwelling drains, and arthrotomy. Antibiotics were administered systemically and by joint irrigation. The infant responded we

Occupancy estimation of wild species in a palm oil plantation using unstructured data.

In 2020-2024, plantation workers at a large oil palm plantation in West Kalimantan recorded sightings of wild species of several species groups. They did not use a standardized field method and produced no comprehensive reports but recorded only one or a few species per visit. Such unstructured data are generally viewed as challenging for statistical analysis. Here, we used occupancy models to estimate what proportion of spatial units (both non-natural and forest) a given species occupied annually in the plantation. We tested models with different covariates for species for which most data wer

Earliest Miocene hominoid from Southeast Asia.

A new hominoid fossil site, Chiang Muan in northern Thailand, yielded the first finding of a large-bodied Miocene hominoid in Southeast Asia. This specimen (CMu6-1'00) was preliminarily reported by Kunimatsu et al. Later, Chaimanee et al. reported additional hominoid teeth from the same site, but all of them were collected from younger deposits (the Upper Lignite Member, in Nagaoka and Suganuma). The specimen described here (CMu6-1'00) was recovered from the Lower Lignite Member (Nagaoka and Suganuma), which is probably several hundred thousand years older than the Upper Lignite Member (Suganu
