Population genetic data of 30 insertion-deletion markers in Punjabi population of Pakistan.

Insertion-deletion polymorphism (Indels) is valuable diallelic markers for forensic as well as parentage analysis. The Investigator DIPplex Kit (Qiagen) contains thirty autosomal Indels markers along with amelogenin. These thirty markers were tested in the Pakistani Punjabi Population but no significant deviations were observed from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium rule expectations (Bonferroni corrected) except HLD58, HLD56, HLD99, and HLD40. The mean expected and observed heterozygosity was found 0.4701 and 0.4667 respectively; combined matching probability was computed as 7.31867 × 10-13. However

Pre-vaccination nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in a Nigerian population: epidemiology and population biology.

BACKGROUND: Introduction of pneumococcal vaccines in Nigeria is a priority as part of the Accelerated Vaccine Introduction Initiative (AVI) of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI). However, country data on the burden of pneumococcal disease (IPD) is limited and coverage by available conjugate vaccines is unknown. This study was carried out to describe the pre vaccination epidemiology and population biology of pneumococcal carriage in Nigeria. METHODS: This was a cross sectional survey. Nasopharyngeal swabs (NPS) were obtained from a population sample in 14 contiguous peri-

Population genomics of Chlamydia trachomatis: insights on drift, selection, recombination, and population structure.

The large number of sexually transmitted diseases and ocular trachoma cases that are caused globally each year by Chlamydia trachomatis has made this organism a World Health Organization priority for vaccine development. However, there is no gene transfer system for Chlamydia to help identify potential vaccine targets. To accelerate discoveries toward this goal, here we analyzed the broadest diversity of C. trachomatis genomes to date, including 25 geographically dispersed clinical and seven reference strains representing 14 of the 19 known serotypes. Strikingly, all 32 genomes were found to h

Downplaying reality: is the UN population fund forgetting population growth and family planning?

BACKGROUND: The global population is projected by the UN Population Division to continue growing by over 2 billion, from 8.1 in 2024 to 10.3 in 2084, aggravating climate change and biodiversity loss, raising risks of poverty and starvation, and impairing reproductive health in many developing countries, especially in Africa. OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of the population policy of a major international actor in reproductive health, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and presentation of alternative and complementary policy addressing population growth, high fertility rates and unmet need for

Cancer incidence, treatment, and survival in the prison population compared with the general population in England: a population-based, matched cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The growing and ageing prison population in England makes accurate cancer data of increasing importance for prison health policies. This study aimed to compare cancer incidence, treatment, and survival between patients diagnosed in prison and the general population. METHODS: In this population-based, matched cohort study, we used cancer registration data from the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service in England to identify primary invasive cancers and cervical cancers in situ diagnosed in adults (aged ≥18 years) in the prison and general populations between Jan 1, 1998

Recovering the pre-colonial population structure of Khoe-San descendant populations.

San populations from Botswana and Namibia retain exceptional linguistic, cultural and genetic diversity, but few Khoisan-speaking groups remain south of the Kalahari Desert. However, historically, far southern Africa was home to many San and Khoekhoe groups. Popular opinion often implies that such populations do not contribute to the ancestry of contemporary South Africans. Here, we characterize the genetic ancestry of self-identified South African Coloured groups and reconstruct pre- and colonial population structure from 620 newly sampled individuals. These groups retain majority Khoe-San ge

Population Health Implications of Medicaid Prerelease and Transition Services for Incarcerated Populations.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points A large population of incarcerated people may be eligible for prerelease and transition services under the new Medicaid Reentry Section 1115 Demonstration Opportunity. We estimated the largest relative population increases in Medicaid coverage from the opportunity may be expected in smaller and more rural states. We found that mental illness, hepatitis C, and chronic kidney disease prevalence rates were sufficiently high among incarcerated populations to likely skew overall Medicaid population prevalence of these diseases when prerelease and transition services are ex

Use of Population Genetics to Assess the Ecology, Evolution, and Population Structure of Coccidioides.

During the past 20 years, a general picture of the genetic diversity and population structure of Coccidioides, the causal agent of coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever), has emerged. The genus consists of 2 genetically diverse species, C. immitis and C. posadasii, each of which contains 1 or more distinct populations with limited gene flow. Genotypic data indicate that C. immitis is divided into 2 subpopulations (central and southern California populations) and C. posadasii is divided into 3 subpopulations (Arizona, Mexico, and Texas/South America populations). However, admixture within and among

A population-based study of the epidemiology of hepatitis C in a North American population.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major public health problem with approximately 3% of the world's population thought to be chronically infected. However, population-based data regarding HCV incidence rates, prevalence, residence, age, and gender distributions within North America are limited. We aimed at providing a detailed descriptive epidemiology of HCV infection in a North American population with a focus on time trends in incidence rates and prevalence of newly diagnosed HCV infection since 1991, the time when laboratory testing for HCV infections became f

Characterization of gout in a skeletal population sample: presumptive diagnosis in a Micronesian population.

Characterization of the nature and skeletal distribution of gout was accomplished in a Chamoru (Chamorros) population with predilection to the disease. Uniform excavation by the gouty diathesis produces a punched-out appearance to these predominantly monarticular lesions. The lesion is distinct from that seen in rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathy, or infection. Reactive new bone formation in some gouty lesions also has an apparently unique, ivory-like discoloration (contrasted with the adjacent bone), which facilitates diagnosis.

[Frequency of adherent colibacillus in a population with acute pyelonephritis and a population with acute cystitis].

Urothelial adhesion of Escherichia coli is one of the principal factors of colonisation and infection of the upper urinary tract. We compared 3 measurements of bacterial adhesion: 1) Mannose-Resistant Haemagglutination (MRHA), é) Adhesion to urothelial cells, 3) Latex particle agglutination, to test 85 strains of Escherichia coli in 42 cases of acute pyelonephritis and 43 cases of acute cystitis. These tests were positive in 73.8% to 85.7% of the acute pyelonephritis population and in 4% to 2.3% of the acute cystitis population (statistically significant difference). This study confirms the ma
