Deliberate control in a natural fertility population: southern Sweden, 1766-1864.

In this article, we analyze fertility control in a rural population characterized by natural fertility, using survival analysis on a longitudinal data set at the individual level combined with food prices. Landless and semilandless families responded strongly to short-term economic stress stemming from changes in prices. The fertility response, both to moderate and large changes in food prices, was the strongest within six months after prices changed in the fall, which means that the response was deliberate. People foresaw bad times and planned their fertility accordingly. The result highlight

Population-based case-control teratogenic study of hydroxyprogesterone treatment during pregnancy.

Hydroxyprogesterone, a synthetic progestin, was used for the treatment of pregnant women with threatened abortion and preterm delivery. Previous studies showed some association between hydroxyprogesterone use during early pregnancy and some specific congenital abnormalities. The population-based large Hungarian data set seemed to be appropriate to check this possible association. The Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities between 1980 and 1996 includes 22 843 cases with congenital abnormalities and 38 151 controls without any defect. 318 (1.4%) cases, while 433 (1.1%)

An exploratory population-based case-control study of primary biliary cirrhosis.

Primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) is a disease of unknown etiology, with unexplained geographical variation. Various exposures have been suggested as triggers for disease development-possibly in susceptible individuals, but the evidence was not always well founded. We therefore conducted a population-based case-control study in Northeast England to investigate these and other exposures. All cases incident during 1993 to 1995 in a defined area of Northeast England were identified, and age- and sex-matched population controls were identified from primary care population registers. Cases and contro

A case-control study of hidradenitis suppurativa in an STD population.

The prevalence of hidradenitis suppurativa has been found to be higher among patients attending an STD clinic than in an unselected general population sample. The aetiology of hidradenitis in unknown, but an association with chlamydial infections has been suggested for perineal lesions. Our aim was to describe the history of STD, STD risk factors and possible current STD in patients with hidradenitis. A case-control study comparing patients with hidradenitis (20) and controls (60) was therefore made in patients attending an STD clinic. Genital HPV infection was found to be more common in patie

Metal Ion-Triggered Collapsed Hydrogels as Materials for Bacterial Population Control.

Hydrogels are versatile soft materials extensively employed in applications ranging from biomedicine to environmental technologies owing to their high water content and tunable physicochemical properties. In this work, we describe a metal ion-induced collapse phenomenon in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-borate hydrogels triggered by Cu2+ cations, leading to a class of materials termed metal ion-triggered collapsed hydrogels (MitCH). Upon increasing the concentration of copper sulfate, conventional PVA-borate hydrogels undergo an abrupt contraction accompanied by water expulsion and formation of a r

Severe, uncontrolled epilepsy in pregnancy: A population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy affects one percent of the UK population and is the most common serious neurological condition experienced during pregnancy. We compared the characteristics, clinical management, and pregnancy outcomes in women with severe, uncontrolled epilepsy to those of women with well controlled disease. METHODS: We conducted a population-based case-control study in all UK consultant-led maternity units. Cases of severe uncontrolled epilepsy during pregnancy were identified prospectively and reported via the UK Obstetric Surveillance System (UKOSS). Severe epilepsy was defined a-prio

Causes of hypercapnic respiratory failure: a population-based case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: There are no population-based data on the relative importance of specific causes of hypercapnic respiratory failure (HRF). We sought to quantify the associations between hospitalisation with HRF and potential antecedent causes including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea, and congestive cardiac failure. We used data on the prevalence of these conditions to estimate the population attributable fraction for each cause. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among residents aged ≥ 40 years from the Liverpool local government area in Sydney, Aust

Behavioural, odontological and physical activity patterns of hypertense and control population.

Behavioural and multifactorial factors such as odontological and physical activity habits are controlling factors in hypertension. The aim of the present study was to analyze differences in behavioral, odontological and physical activity patterns of hypertense and control population. Fifty participants with hypertension (57.5±13.6 years) and 100 participants as control group with no hypertension disease (48.9±7.9 years) were interviewed via online questionnaire. Multifactorial items in oral behavioral, health habits and physical activity profile were analyzed by a compendium of questionnaires.

Maternal risk factors for gastroschisis: A population-based case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is an open abdominal wall defect with low mortality but significant morbidity. The prevalence has been increasing worldwide for the past decades. Several risk factors for gastroschisis have been identified, but no clear reason for increasing prevalence has been found. In our study, we aimed to assess and identify maternal risk factors for gastroschisis. METHODS: In our nationwide register-based case-control study, we identified all gastroschisis cases in the Finnish Register of Congenital Malformations from 2004 to 2014. Vaping for weight control: A cross-sectional population study in England.

INTRODUCTION: Concern about weight gain is a barrier to smoking cessation. E-cigarettes may help quitters to control their weight through continued exposure to the appetite-suppressant effects of nicotine and behavioural aspects of vaping. This study explored the views and practices of smokers, ex-smokers and current e-cigarette users relating to vaping and weight control. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of past-year smokers (n = 1320), current smokers (n = 1240) and current e-cigarette users (n = 394) in England, conducted April-July 2018. Data were weighted to match the English population o

Paediatric leptospirosis: A population based case-control study from Chennai, India.

The surveillance in Chennai identified 134 children and 443 adults clinically suspected for leptospirosis. Of these, 35 (26.1%) children and 118 (26.6%) adults had laboratory confirmed diagnosis for leptospirosis. The paediatric leptospirosis exhibited a higher frequency of classic features of Weil's disease. The prevalent serovar encountered was Icterohaemorrhagiae with no difference in the pattern of infecting serovars between the two groups. Further, confirmation of diagnosis was achieved by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with a positivity of 28.4% (specificity 96%). Univariate analysis sh

Population Dynamics of Owned, Free-Roaming Dogs: Implications for Rabies Control.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a serious yet neglected public health threat in resource-limited communities in Africa, where the virus is maintained in populations of owned, free-roaming domestic dogs. Rabies elimination can be achieved through the mass vaccination of dogs, but maintaining the critical threshold of vaccination coverage for herd immunity in these populations is hampered by their rapid turnover. Knowledge of the population dynamics of free-roaming dog populations can inform effective planning and implementation of mass dog vaccination campaigns to control rabies. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL F

The case for transmissible antivirals to control population-wide infectious disease.

Infectious disease control faces significant challenges including: how to therapeutically target the highest-risk populations, circumvent behavioral barriers, and overcome pathogen persistence and resistance mechanisms. We review a recently proposed solution to overcome these challenges: antivirals that transmit by 'piggybacking' on viral replication. These proposed antivirals, termed 'therapeutic interfering particles' (TIPs), are engineered molecular parasites of viruses that are designed to steal replication resources from the wild type virus. Depriving viruses of crucial replication machin

Rigid and flexible control of eating behavior in a college population.

The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between rigid control (RC) and flexible control (FC) of eating behavior and their relationship to traditional weight, eating, and affective measurements in a large heterogeneous population. Participants were 639 underweight to obese male and female college students. Multiple regression analyses (MRA) revealed that high RC was associated with high Body Mass Index (BMI) and high Disinhibition (DIS), and high FC was associated with low BMI and low DIS in women. In men, high RC was associated with high BMI and high DIS, whereas FC was not
