Population-Based Health Engagement Opportunities Through Breast Imaging: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Survey.

PURPOSE: As health care payment systems transition from fee-for-service to bundled payments, there is an increasing opportunity for radiologists to collaborate to improve population-based health care outcomes. Our purpose was to estimate the extent to which patients engaged in mammography underwent other additional imaging- and non-imaging-based preventative health services using Centers for Disease Control National Population Health Surveys. METHODS: Women aged 40 to 74 in the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System cross-sectional survey without histories of breast cancer who report

Tobacco and nicotine population health planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population growth.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population growth has important implications for tobacco and nicotine health planning. Using the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) DataLab, we examined weighted estimates of the absolute number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 18 years and over, drawing on the 2012-13 and 2018-19 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Surveys. We compared the absolute number of people who currently smoke, stratified by age, state/territory, and sex. There was a 2.5 percentage point decline in smoking prevalence over this period, but

Assessment of oral health status in a Ghanaian population: rationale, methods, and population characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Oral health surveys aid in estimating the oral health of a population and provide a projection for future oral health care needs. We report the procedures and rationale of a survey carried out to assess the oral health status and risk factors for oral disease among adults in the Greater Accra Region (GAR) of Ghana. The objective was to provide prevalence estimates on dental diseases, oral health behaviour and risk factors, and to establish baseline epidemiological data on the population's oral health for further research. METHODS: This was a population-based cross-sectional study

Caring for Communities: Comparing Health Care System Patient Populations to Regional Populations.

BACKGROUND: Recent years have seen an increase in the number and size of integrated health care delivery systems in the USA. The size and sophistication of these systems afford a greater focus on population health, leading to a fundamental question: How do the patients of these systems compare to the underlying regional populations that the systems serve? OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an approach to answering this question for a large public integrated delivery system, with a particular focus on neighborhood social determinants of health (SDOH). DESIGN: We present a descriptive, graphical compar

[The aftermath of climate changes for life and health of population].

The article considers effects of climate changes on prevalence of non-communicable and infectious diseases. The impact of extreme temperatures, droughts, floods and storms increases morbidity and mortality and causes food problems resulting in spread of famine and contamination of food with fungal toxins. Besides, climatic changes lead to spreading of arthropod-borne diseases and stimulate accelerated development of antibiotic resistance of microorganisms. In spite of the fact that climate changes may entail number of advantages their positive effect is negated by long-term consequences of neg

Population health and the carceral continuum: A narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Mass incarceration in the US constitutes only one facet of a larger carceral network. Key carceral logics such as punishment, policing, surveillance, pathologization, and confinement have become integral components in immigration and human services provision. Though the criminal legal system's public health impact has been widely studied at the individual level, the body of work concerning the community-level health consequences of this expanded carceral continuum is more nascent. This narrative review aims to synthesize existing quantitative research examining the carceral syste

Guidelines and Policies: Implications for Individual and Population Health.

Rising rates of prescription opioids for chronic pain from the 1990s along with a concomitant worsening overdose crisis led to rapid evaluation and public health strategies to curb problems with prescription opioids. Guideline development, grounded in solid theory but based on limited evidence that translated into rigid and discordant policies, has contributed to controversies in pain management, worsening the treatment experience for people experiencing chronic pain and highlighting existing inequities from a system clouded with systemic racism. Newer public health approaches need to evaluate

Digestive Health in Sexual and Gender Minority Populations.

It has been over 50 years since the Stonewall Inn Riots in June 1969, a seminal event for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and other sexual and gender-diverse minorities (LGBTQI+, or lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and everyone else) rights movement. However, sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals still face discrimination and harassment due to their sexual orientation or gender identity. As such, the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities has identified SGM communities as a "health disparity population." Broadly, there

Stigma as a fundamental cause of population health inequalities.

Bodies of research pertaining to specific stigmatized statuses have typically developed in separate domains and have focused on single outcomes at 1 level of analysis, thereby obscuring the full significance of stigma as a fundamental driver of population health. Here we provide illustrative evidence on the health consequences of stigma and present a conceptual framework describing the psychological and structural pathways through which stigma influences health. Because of its pervasiveness, its disruption of multiple life domains (e.g., resources, social relationships, and coping behaviors),

Mental health of the non-heterosexual population of England.

BACKGROUND: There has been little research into the prevalence of mental health problems in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people in the UK with most work conducted in the USA. AIMS: To relate the prevalence of mental disorder, self-harm and suicide attempts to sexual orientation in England, and to test whether psychiatric problems were associated with discrimination on grounds of sexuality. METHOD: The Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey 2007 (n = 7403) was representative of the population living in private UK households. Standardised questions provided demographic information. Is it time for a population health approach to neck pain?

OBJECTIVE: Neck pain and its associated disorders (NPAD) cause significant health burden in the general population and after road traffic and occupational injury. Individual-level health care treatments have been well studied, but population-health approaches to this problem have not. We used a best-evidence synthesis to examine population-level approaches to the prevention and control of NPAD. METHODS: The systematic review examined studies published between 1980 and 2006 that addressed the incidence, prevalence, risk factors, prevention, cost, assessment and classification, interventions, a

Health evaluation of a pronghorn antelope population in Oregon.

During 1996 and 1997, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service conducted a study to determine the cause(s) of population decline and low survival of pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) fawns on Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge (HMNAR) located in southeastern Oregon (USA). As part of that study, blood, fecal, and tissue samples from 104 neonatal fawns, 40 adult does, and nine adult male pronghorns were collected to conduct a health evaluation of the population. Physiological parameters related to nutrition and/or disease were studied. No abnormalities were found in the complete blood cel
