Anatomicohistological characteristics of the genital tubular organs of the female brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus, Gray 1842) from Gabon.

The present study examines the anatomic and histological characteristics of the female genital tract of the wild brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus africanus). A description of the macroscopic and microscopic features of the tubular genital organs based on observations made in 18 wild adult females is presented. The histological stains used were haematoxylin and eosin, 1% toluidine blue, PAS-haematoxylin and Masson's trichrome. Observations indicate that the fimbriated infundibulum of the oviduct completely surrounds and is attached to the entire ovarian surface. The uterus is bicornuate, being

Implementation of high-resolution melting analysis of the porcupine (PORCN) gene for molecular diagnosis of focal dermal hypoplasia: Identification of a novel mutation.

BACKGROUND: Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH) is rare X-linked dominant disease characterized by atrophy and linear pigmentation of the skin, split hand/foot deformities and ocular anomalies. FDH is caused by mutations of the Porcupine (PORCN) gene, which encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the palmitoylation of Wnt ligands required for their secretion. High resolution melting analysis (HRM) is a technique that allows rapid, labor-efficient, low-cost detection of genomic variants. In the present study, we report the successful implementation of HRM in the molecular diagnosis of FDH. METHODS: Polymer

Fossil Asiatic Brush-Tailed Porcupine Atherurus macrourus (Hystricidae, Rodentia) from Northern Vietnam (Bud Cave, Pleistocene-Holocene Transition).

The lower jaw and dental remains of the brush-tailed porcupine are described from the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary deposits of the Bud cave in northern Vietnam. In terms of the average length of the cheek teeth, this porcupine is somewhat larger than the modern Atherurus macrourus (Linnaeus, 1758), but slightly smaller than the Pleistocene A. karnuliensis Lydekker, 1886; relatively small incisors make it possible to assign the form from the Bud сave to A. macrourus. The finding is the first fossil record of this species in Vietnam.

Linking sedimentary sulfur and iron biogeochemistry to growth patterns of a cold-water coral mound in the Porcupine Basin, S.W. Ireland (IODP Expedition 307).

Challenger Mound, a 150-m-high cold-water coral mound on the eastern flank of the Porcupine Seabight off SW Ireland, was drilled during Expedition 307 of the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP). Retrieved cores offer unique insight into an archive of Quaternary paleo-environmental change, long-term coral mound development, and the diagenetic alteration of these carbonate fabrics over time. To characterize biogeochemical carbon-iron-sulfur transformations in the mound sediments, the contents of dithionite- and HCl-extractable iron phases, iron monosulfide and pyrite, and acid-extractable c

Molecular modeling of the stability of the interaction of Sunda porcupine (Hystrix javanica) quill protein homologs with vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR-2).

Porcupines (Hystrix spp.) are widely distributed rodents known not only for their ecological roles but also for their traditional medicinal applications. In Indonesia, quills from species like Hystrix javanica, Hystrix sumatraensis, and Hystrix brachyura are traditionally used to relieve pain and promote wound healing. Scientific studies have revealed that porcupine quills are rich in bioactive compounds, including keratin, peptides, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. Keratin, a structural protein abundant in epithelial cells extracted from porcupine quill, has been found to support various wound-

Fatal Systemic Toxoplasma gondii Infection in a Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), a Swinhoe's Striped Squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei) and a New World Porcupine (Erethizontidae sp.).

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease that affects man and animals worldwide. The primary hosts and major reservoir for Toxoplasma gondii are felids and the intermediate hosts are most warm-blooded animals including man. This report describes fatal toxoplasmosis in three different rodent species in Germany: a female red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) and a male Swinhoe's striped squirrel (Tamiops swinhoei), both kept as pets, and a female New World porcupine (Erethizontidae sp.) from a zoo. All three animals had multifocal necrotizing hepatitis. Additional findings included lymphohistiocytic and n

Identification and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in free-ranging bristle-spined porcupine (Chaetomys subspinosus), a threatened arboreal mammal from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

BACKGROUND: Strains of Toxoplasma gondii in Brazil have high genetic diversity compared to North America and Europe. The bristle-spined porcupine, Chaetomys subspinosus, is often subject to hunting for human food, but it is not known whether it can be a reservoir of this parasite. The aim of this study was to verify the occurrence of T. gondii in C. subspinosus from southern Bahia, Brazil, and genetically characterize and compare the strains found with those isolated in previous studies of the same region to quantify their genetic diversity by multilocus PCR-RFLP and PCR sequencing. FINDINGS:

Distribution of androgen receptor immunoreactive cells in the adrenal glands of Hystrix javanica.

BACKGROUND: The adrenal glands play a vital role in regulating endocrine functions by producing corticosteroids, mineralocorticoids, and androgens. Adrenal androgens contribute to overall systemic androgen levels, primarily through interactions with androgen receptors (ARs) within the gland. Although the distribution of AR has been studied in various mammalian species, no research has yet focused on the Sunda porcupines (Hystrix javanica), a species of considerable ecological importance in Indonesia. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the endocrinal regulation of the adrenal gland of Sunda

Records for ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) on free-ranging Coendou spinosus from State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases have spread since the mid-twentieth century largely due to major anthropogenic changes impacting natural ecosystems. The Coendou spinosus is a medium sized rodent found in the southeast of Brazil. There is little information about the presence and richness of ticks on porcupines. The objective of this study was to identified ticks collected from C. spinosus received at a triage center of wildlife in the city of São Paulo, from 1996 to 2025 (almost 30 years). Ticks from a total of 100 free-ranging porcupines were collected. A total of 223 ticks in various life stag

Inhibiting WNT secretion reduces high bone mass caused by Sost loss-of-function or gain-of-function mutations in Lrp5.

Proper regulation of Wnt signaling is critical for normal bone development and homeostasis. Mutations in several Wnt signaling components, which increase the activity of the pathway in the skeleton, cause high bone mass in human subjects and mouse models. Increased bone mass is often accompanied by severe headaches from increased intracranial pressure, which can lead to fatality and loss of vision or hearing due to the entrapment of cranial nerves. In addition, progressive forehead bossing and mandibular overgrowth occur in almost all subjects. Treatments that would provide symptomatic relief

Association of Malassezia (Pityrosporum) pachydermatis with sarcoptic mange in New York State.

Malassezia (Pityrosporum) pachydermatis consistently accompanied sarcoptic mange in all red foxes (Vulpes fulva), porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum), and coyotes (Canis latrans) examined. This yeastlike microorganism has not heretofore been reported on any of these hosts. Its presence on the exoskeleton of Sarcoptes scabiei taken from these animals suggests a carrier role for the mite. The yeast may be saprophytic or a secondary pathogen.
