BACKGROUND: Surgical treatment of intractable epilepsy caused by porencephaly can be difficult because of poorly localizing or lateralizing electroclinical findings. The authors aimed to determine whether noninvasive evaluations are sufficient in these patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate and diagnose the timing of asphyxial injury leading to cerebral cavitation with subsequent developing of neonatal porencephaly in the preterm VLBW infant. All newborns underwent careful neurodevelopmental outcome at 2 years of corrected age.
METHODS: 250 consecutive VLBW infants (mean gestational age of 28 weeks and mean birthweight of 1150 g) have been study by means of weekly neonatal transfontanellae ultrasonography. Periventricular white matter necrosis was diagnosed when echolucencies were visible after day 3 from birth.

The radiographic evaluation of a spectrum of vascular cerebral damage is presented, ranging from simple porencephaly to the most severe form, classic hydranencephaly. With a combination of clinical materal and computed tomography, it is possible in most cases to arrive at a specific diagnosis of hydranencephaly or severe bilateral porencephaly. Pictorially similar entities, such as massive congenital subdural hematomas or hygromas, alobar holoprosencephaly, massive hydrocephalus, and massive postanoxic or infective encephalopathies, are discussed.

BACKGROUND: A porencephalic cyst is a cavity within the cerebral hemisphere, filled with cerebrospinal fluid, that communicates directly with the ventricular system. It is a rare condition probably caused by vascular occlusion resulting from an insult during fetal development or an injury occurring later in life. Porencephaly is often associated with various ophthalmic and neurologic signs, including visual-field defects, abnormal pupillary responses, optic nerve hypoplasia, decreased vision, nystagmus, strabismus, hemi-inattention, seizures, and mental deficiencies.

The CT findings in 120 cerebral palsied children are analysed. The 72.5% positive findings are correlated with the clinical types, as well as the aetiological basis for the cerebral palsy. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a characteristic form of brain damage (encephaloclastic porencephaly) was associated with chest physiotherapy treatment in preterm babies.
METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was undertaken among 454 infants of birth weight less than 1500 gm cared for during the 3-year period of 1992 to 1994.
