OBJECTIVES: A systematic review with meta-analysis was completed to study the effects of dietary inorganic nitrate (NO3-) oral ingestion from vegetables and salts on blood pressure responses during and following exercise.
BACKGROUND: NO3- is a hypotensive agent with the potential to reduce blood pressure peaks during exercise and amplify exercise-induced hypotensive effects. Several randomized and controlled trials have investigated the effects of NO3- on hemodynamic responses to physical exercise, however this still has yet to be studied systematically.
METHODS: The searches were conducted

Dynamic resistance exercise (RE) produces sinusoidal fluctuations in blood pressure, with hypotension and cerebral hypoperfusion commonly observed immediately following RE. Whether the cerebral vasculature adapts to these regular blood pressure challenges is unclear. This study examined the cerebrovascular response to post-dynamic RE orthostasis. RE-trained (n = 15, female = 4) and healthy untrained individuals (n = 15, female = 12) completed five stands: one after seated rest, with each of the subsequent four stands occurring immediately following a set of 10 repetitions of unilateral leg ext

Dynamic exercise elicits fluctuations in blood pressure (BP) and cerebral blood flow (CBF). This study investigated responses in BP and CBF during cycling exercise and post-exercise hypotension (PEH) using positron emission tomography (PET). CBF was measured using oxygen-15-labeled water (H215O) and PET in 11 human subjects at rest (Rest), at the onset of exercise (Ex1), later in the exercise (Ex2), and during PEH. Global CBF significantly increased by 13% at Ex1 compared with Rest, but was unchanged at Ex2 and during PEH. Compared with at Rest, regional CBF (rCBF) increased at Ex1 (20~42%) in

OBJECTIVES: Exercise can improve motor function in people with Parkinson's disease but depression reduces the motivation to participate in regular exercise. The aim of this study was to develop a novel Enhanced Exercise Therapy program that uses manual-driven guided exercise and peer-facilitated psychoeducation for individuals with Parkinson's disease and depression.
DESIGN: 24 week randomized controlled design.
METHODS: Thirty individuals were randomized to Enhanced Exercise Therapy or self-guided therapy, and evaluated at baseline, 12-weeks and at 24-weeks. Enhanced Exercise Therapy includ

Unstable blood pressure after spinal cord injury (SCI) is not routinely examined but rather predicted by level and completeness of injury (i.e., American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale AIS classification). Our aim was to investigate hemodynamic response to a sit-up test in a large cohort of individuals with chronic SCI to better understand cardiovascular function in this population. Continuous blood pressure and ECG were recorded from individuals with SCI (n = 159) and non-injured individuals (n = 48). We found orthostatic hypotension occurred within each level and AIS classificati

Delays in the restoration of thermoregulation after exercise in a hot environment has been associated with post-exercise hypotension. This study tested the hypothesis that simultaneous internal cooling and rehydration by ingesting ice slurry prevents the excessive decrease in mean arterial pressure (MAP) and promotes recovery of core and skin temperatures in male athletes. Seven male athletes participated in this randomized controlled trial with a crossover design. The participants ran on a treadmill at 75% of their maximal oxygen uptake in the heat (35 °C, 60% relative humidity), up to exhaus

We present the case of a 45-year-old healthy man who successfully completed three stages of the Bruce protocol but developed inferolateral ST segment elevation in the recovery phase. The ECG change was associated with a marked drop in blood pressure. He underwent emergency coronary angiography which revealed normal coronary arteries. It is likely that post-exercise hypotension triggered coronary spasm which caused the ST segment elevation. Alternatively, coronary spasm may have been the primary event, inducing sufficient myocardial ischaemia to cause a marked drop in blood pressure. Exercise t

Cardiovascular and postural control systems have been studied independently despite the increasing evidence showing the importance of cardiopostural interaction in blood pressure regulation. In this study, we aimed to assess the role of the cardiopostural interaction in relation to cardiac baroreflex in blood pressure regulation under orthostatic stress before and after mild exercise. Physiological variables representing cardiovascular control (heart rate and systolic blood pressure), lower limb muscle activation (electromyography), and postural sway (center of pressure derived from force and

Autonomic cardiovascular control is often disrupted following a spinal cord injury (SCI), resulting in impaired autonomic cardiac regulation and hemodynamic instability. A systematic preregistered review following existing guidelines was undertaken to evaluate the effect of exercise training on noninvasive measures of autonomic cardiovascular control, including orthostatic intolerance, blood pressure variability (BPV), baroreflex function, and heart rate variability (HRV) in adults with SCI. Seven databases were searched from inception to October 2025. Experimental studies (randomized controll

This study evaluated the acute cardiovascular responses to resistance exercise (RE) sessions with different set configurations in normotensive and hypertensive postmenopausal females. 50 physically active postmenopausal females performed a control (CON) and three RE sessions matched for total volume (144 repetitions), load (12-repetition maximum load), and total rest time (360s) but differing in set configuration: 4 sets of 9 repetitions with 120 s rest (9 S); 6 sets of 6 repetitions with 72 s rest (6 S); and 9 sets of 4 repetitions with 45 s rest (4 S). Heart rate (HR) was recorded during exe

Blood pressure (BP) follows a circadian rhythm, dipping during sleep and surging in the morning. A larger morning BP surge is an independent predictor of cardiovascular events. Acute exercise can produce sustained periods of post-exercise hypotension that last up to 24 h; however, the timing of exercise (morning vs. evening) may influence this response. Whether the timing of exercise influences the morning BP surge remains unknown. The current study investigated the effects of a bout of high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) performed in the morning versus evening on the magnitude of the morn

BACKGROUND: Post-exercise hypotension is an acute systemic recovery response that links exercise physiology with blood pressure control, yet the response to all-out sprint interval exercise is less clearly defined than responses to moderate-intensity continuous or submaximal interval exercise.
METHODS: Six databases were searched from inception to 1 February 2026. Controlled acute human studies were eligible when they examined a single bout of sprint interval exercise (SIE) or a closely equivalent all-out, repeated-sprint, Wingate-based or supramaximal interval protocol and reported post-exer

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused tremendous morbidity and mortality worldwide. The large number of post-COVID survivors has drawn attention to the management of post-COVID condition, known as long COVID. This review examines current knowledge of long COVID, regarding its epidemiology, mechanism, and clinical presentations in both adults and children. We also review the rehabilitation principles, modules, and effects, and share Taiwan's efforts to provide a top-down, nationwide care framework for long COVID patients. Dyspnea, chronic cough, and fatigue are the most commonly report

Prolonged bedrest provokes orthostatic hypotension and intolerance of upright posture. Limited data are available on the cardiovascular responses of older adults to head-up tilt following bedrest, with no studies examining the potential benefits of exercise to mitigate intolerance in this age group. This randomized controlled trial of head-down bedrest (HDBR) in 55- to 65-yr-old men and women investigated if exercise could avert post-HDBR orthostatic intolerance. Twenty-two healthy older adults (11 female) underwent a strict 14-day HDBR and were assigned to either an exercise (EX) or control (

Although there is a trend toward outdoor activities, limited research has examined the effects of outdoor exercise on blood pressure. This study aimed to compare the Systolic (sBP) and Diastolic (dBP) Blood Pressure, Heart Rate (HR) response, Post-Exercise Hypotension (PEH) and Rate Pressure Product (RPP) following indoor and outdoor activities. Hypertension remains the leading modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. While clinical guidelines strongly recommend lifestyle modifications, including exercise, as a core treatment, they currently lack specific recommendations regarding the optimal timing of its administration. Given the circadian regulation of blood pressure (BP), autonomic tone, and vascular function, the timing of exercise may impact BP control. This systematic review aims to synthesize evidence from randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to compare the effects of morning and evening exerci
