Effect of Oral Versus Nasal Breathing on Muscular Performance, Muscle Oxygenation, and Post-Exercise Recovery.

Nitric oxide (NO) plays a crucial role in muscle oxidative capacity, which predicts muscle strength. This study aimed to investigate whether different breathing techniques (nasal or oral breathing) affect muscle performance during acute exhaustive exercise. In our study, 49 healthy individuals (24♀/25♂; age 22.8 ± 3.4 years) performed two Wingate anaerobic tests in a counterbalanced order. Although perceived exertion was significantly higher with oral breathing (Borg Scale: 9.0 ± 1.1 vs. 8.0 ± 1.3, p = 0.04), breathing mode did not impact power output (peak: 749 ± 290 vs. 728 ± 284 W; average:

Emerging trends in management of long COVID with a focus on pulmonary rehabilitation: A review.

Long COVID, or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 (PASC), represents a complex condition with persistent symptoms following SARS-Cov-2 infection. The symptoms include fatigue, dyspnoea, cognitive impairment, decreased quality of life in variable levels of severity. Potential mechanisms behind long COVID include vascular damage, immune dysregulation and viral persistence. Diagnosing long COVID involves medical evaluation by multidisciplinary team and assessment of persistent symptoms with scoring systems in development. Treatment strategies are symptom-focused, encompassing multidisciplinary care,

Pharmacological Activation of PDC Flux Reverses Lipid-Induced Inhibition of Insulin Action in Muscle During Recovery From Exercise.

Insulin resistance is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and exercise can improve insulin sensitivity. However, following exercise, high circulating fatty acid (FA) levels might counteract this. We hypothesized that such inhibition would be reduced by forcibly increasing carbohydrate oxidation through pharmacological activation of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC). Insulin-stimulated glucose uptake was examined with a crossover design in healthy young men (n = 8) in a previously exercised and a rested leg during a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp 5 h after one-legged exercise with 1) i

Endoscopic decompression for chronic compartment syndrome of the forearm in motocross racers.

PURPOSE: Sporting activities that involve repetitive stress to muscle compartments can elicit chronic exertional compartment syndrome. Its occurrence in the lower leg muscle compartments is most common, but other locations are less well known and the pathophysiology is not completely understood. In motocross racers, chronic exertional compartment syndrome can occur in the muscles of the lower arm. Currently, the only accepted treatment of correctly diagnosed chronic exertional compartment syndrome is surgical release of the fascia, which successfully relieves pain and allows patients to return

Acute isometric handgrip exercise enhances cardiac baroreflex sensitivity and lowers systolic blood pressure in chronic kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) impairs cardiac baroreflex sensitivity (cBRS), contributing to poor blood pressure (BP) control and heightened cardiovascular risk. Emerging evidence indicates that isometric handgrip (IHG) exercise may enhance cBRS in healthy individuals; however, its effects in CKD remain unclear. Therefore, this study tested the hypothesis that a single IHG session increases cBRS and reduces beat-to-beat BP variability (BPV) in CKD patients. In 21 patients (61 ± 12 yr; stages III-IV), beat-to-beat BP (finger photoplethysmography), heart rate (HR, electrocardiography), and respir

Simple and effective exercise design for assessing in vivo mitochondrial function in clinical applications using (31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The growing recognition of diseases associated with dysfunction of mitochondria poses an urgent need for simple measures of mitochondrial function. Assessment of the kinetics of replenishment of the phosphocreatine pool after exercise using (31)P magnetic resonance spectroscopy can provide an in vivo measure of mitochondrial function; however, the wider application of this technique appears limited by complex or expensive MR-compatible exercise equipment and protocols not easily tolerated by frail participants or those with reduced mental capacity. Here we describe a novel in-scanner exercise

Effectiveness of transcutaneous spinal direct current stimulation combined with exercise training in patients with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current standardized rehabilitation protocols for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often fail to fully resolve functional deficits arising from initial injury and subsequent surgery. These lingering issues are tied to neural impairments such as reduced corticospinal excitability and weakened motor cortex activation, which disrupt sensorimotor signal transmission, impair motor control, and hinder recovery even after post-operative rehabilitation. Growing evidence suggests that advancing post-ACLR care should synchronize the normalization of neural pathways with perip

[The experience of early rehabilitation].

Functional laryngectomies permit a more or less ideal preservation of laryngeal functions whose recovery, especially in les conservative operations, occurs very slowly and depends on several conditions: post operative course, sensitivity and motility of the hypopharynx, patient's ability to restore swallowing mechanisms. The Authors relate their experience concerning use of a rehabilitative program partially based on the experiences of some French logopedic schools and partially original. They illustrate the steps and goals of this program which starts on the fifth post-operative day with resp

Measurement of Twitch Dynamics in Response to Exercise Induced Changes in Mitochondrial Disease Using Motor Unit Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MUMRI): A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Muscle twitch dynamics and fatigability change in response to muscle disease. In this study, we developed an imaging paradigm to measure muscle twitch dynamics, and the response of the muscle to voluntary fatiguing contractions. We used a novel imaging technique called motor unit magnetic resonance imaging (MUMRI). MUMRI allows visualisation of muscle and motor unit activity by combining in-scanner electrical stimulation with dynamic pulsed gradient spin echo (twitch dynamics, PGSE-MUMRI) and phase contrast (fatigue, PC-MUMRI) imaging. In Part I of this study, we scanned 10 healthy controls, w

Thermographic assessment of surface temperature distribution and agreement between a thermographic camera, infrared thermometer, and rectal temperature in exercising horses under tropical climate conditions.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Infrared thermography has become an increasingly valuable non-invasive imaging technique for monitoring physiological status and detecting abnormalities in horses. However, its application under tropical environmental conditions remains insufficiently investigated, particularly regarding the influence of ambient conditions on measurement accuracy and agreement with conventional temperature assessment methods. This study aimed to evaluate the agreement among a thermographic camera (TC), infrared thermometer (IR), and rectal temperature (RT), characterize body surface tempera
