A case of an infant suffered from a fatal scald injury - validity and limitations of postmortem CT imaging.

A 9months-old infant has died of scald burn by the hot water from the fallen electric pot at home. Postmortem computed tomography (CT) scanning prior to autopsy contributed to exclude the possibilities of old and new bone fractures or hidden massive hemorrhages. This procedure helped the pathologists to avoid dissecting all the extremities, which is time-consuming, laborious and often hurtful to the innocent parents of the deceased. On the other hand it did not successfully show the distribution of the scald burn injury on the skin, which reminded us of the importance of external examination e

[18F]Flotaza for Aβ Plaque Diagnostic Imaging: Evaluation in Postmortem Human Alzheimer's Disease Brain Hippocampus and PET/CT Imaging in 5xFAD Transgenic Mice.

The diagnostic value of imaging Aβ plaques in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has accelerated the development of fluorine-18 labeled radiotracers with a longer half-life for easier translation to clinical use. We have developed [18F]flotaza, which shows high binding to Aβ plaques in postmortem human AD brain slices with low white matter binding. We report the binding of [18F]flotaza in postmortem AD hippocampus compared to cognitively normal (CN) brains and the evaluation of [18F]flotaza in transgenic 5xFAD mice expressing Aβ plaques. [18F]Flotaza binding was assessed in well-characterized human post

Postmortem multislice computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of odontoid fractures, atlantoaxial distractions and ascending medullary edema.

Non-invasive imaging methods are increasingly entering the field of forensic medicine. Facing the intricacies of classical neck dissection techniques, postmortem imaging might provide new diagnostic possibilities which could also improve forensic reconstruction. The aim of this study was to determine the value of postmortem neck imaging in comparison to forensic autopsy regarding the evaluation of the cause of death and the analysis of biomechanical aspects of neck trauma. For this purpose, 5 deceased persons (1 female and 4 male, mean age 49.8 years, range 20-80 years) who had suffered odonto

Whole-body non-forensic fetal virtopsy using postmortem magnetic resonance imaging at 7 Tesla vs classical autopsy.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the diagnostic accuracy of virtual autopsy using whole-body postmortem ultra-high field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7 Tesla (T), using a short T2-weighted imaging (T2-WI) protocol, compared with classical autopsy, for detecting structural abnormalities in small second-trimester fetuses. METHODS: Thirty consecutive fetuses at 13-19 weeks' gestation (weight, 17-364 g) were included following spontaneous pregnancy loss or termination of pregnancy. After fixation in 10% formaldehyde solution (48 h to 1 week), all fetuses were scanned using a two-dimensional turbo h

A case of fatal cervical discoligamentous hyperextension injury without fracture: correlation of postmortem imaging and autopsy findings.

We present a case of fatal cervical discoligamentous hyperextension injury without fracture. Postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) and postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (PMMRI) disclosed cervical instability and spinal cord injury in the absence of fracture, which was confirmed by autopsy. Cervical discoligamentous injury without fracture may be unnoticeable on PMCT because signs of cervical misalignment change depending on the posture of the neck at the time of postmortem imaging. Because of its greater sensitivity for soft tissue injury, PMMRI is especially useful for detecting pathologi

Contrasting effects of haloperidol and lithium on rodent brain structure: a magnetic resonance imaging study with postmortem confirmation.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies suggest that antipsychotic -treated patients with schizophrenia show a decrease in gray-matter volumes, whereas lithium-treated patients with bipolar disorder show marginal increases in gray-matter volumes. Although these clinical data are confounded by illness, chronicity, and other medications, they do suggest that typical antipsychotic drugs and lithium have contrasting effects on brain volume. METHODS: Rodent models offer a tractable system to test this hypothesis, and we therefore examined the effect of chronic treatment (8 weeks) and

Degeneration of the pyramidal tracts in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. A premortem and postmortem magnetic resonance imaging study.

To investigate focal hyperintensity in the internal capsule (IC) on magnetic resonance images (MRIs) and its clinical significance, 80 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and 80 sex- and age-matched normal control subjects were studied. On T2-weighted images, hyperintense foci were found in the posterior part of the posterior limb (PL) of the IC in 41 (51%) of 80 control subjects. However, no subject showed increased signal intensities on proton density-weighted images. Hyperintense foci were also observed in the posterior part of the PL of the IC on T2-weighted images in 52 (65%

Postmortem magnetic resonance imaging to guide the pathologic cut: individualized, 3-dimensionally printed cutting boxes for fixed brains.

Interfacing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with pathology is critically important for understanding the pathologic basis of MRI signal changes in vivo and for clinicopathologic correlations. Postmortem MRI is an intermediate step in this process; unfortunately, however, relating the data to standard pathologic sections, which are relatively thick and often nonparallel, is both time-consuming and insufficiently accurate. The aim of this project was to develop technology to integrate postmortem, high-resolution, whole-brain MRI into the planning and execution of pathologic analysis through pre

Interstellar encounter: Postmortem imaging and virtopsy on a preserved anencephalic Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin specimen after 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Anencephaly is a deadly type of cephalic axial skeletal and neural disorder with a multifactorial aetiology that causes the failure of the rostral neuropore closure, compromising the formation of the neural folds, basicranium, and neurocranium. In cetaceans, there is only one report of this fetal abnormality, dated in late 1991, in a male stillborn Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and diagnosed using transabdominal ultrasonography on its mother that was kept under human care in the Ocean Park Corporation. After birth, physical and general radiographic examination

Synthetic MRI and MR Fingerprinting-Derived Relaxometry of Antenatal Human Brainstem Myelination: A Postmortem-Based Quantitative Imaging Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The radiologic evaluation of ongoing myelination is currently limited prenatally. Novel quantitative MR imaging modalities provide relaxometric properties that are linked to myelinogenesis. In this retrospective postmortem imaging study, the capability of Synthetic MR imaging and MR fingerprinting-derived relaxometry for tracking fetal myelin development was investigated. Moreover, the consistency of results for both MR approaches was analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 26 cases, quantitative postmortem fetal brain MR data were available (gestational age range, 15 + 1

Examination of postmortem changes in the lungs, trachea, and bronchi in a rat model imaged with small-animal computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: As less autopsies are performed, the need for postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) as an alternative is increasing. It is important to know how postmortem changes over time are reflected on CT, in order to improve the diagnostic capability of PMCT and replace forensic pathology evaluations such as time of death estimation. METHODS: In this study, we examined temporal changes on postmortem chest CT images of a rat model. After acquiring antemortem images under isoflurane inhalation anesthesia, the rats were euthanized with a rapid intravenous injection of anesthetics. From immedia

A case of fatal sigmoid volvulus visualized on postmortem radiography: The importance of image optimization with multidetector computed tomography.

This report describes the case of a man who developed fatal sigmoid volvulus that was identified on postmortem radiography before forensic autopsy. Postmortem radiography is useful for visualizing the body prior to autopsy. We discuss postmortem multidetector computed tomography that was tailored for optimum image quality to allow reconstruction of the fatal findings in multiple axes and in three dimensions, helping to pinpoint the anatomical sites of interest. This involves techniques such as manipulation of the scanning beam pitch and overlapping CT section acquisition. These techniques are

Whole-brain in situ postmortem MR imaging using a combination of sequences for cortical lesion detection in multiple sclerosis.

PURPOSE: Cortical lesions are specific for multiple sclerosis but remain challenging to detect using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While numerous MR sequences have been evaluated individually, their combined performance in clinical routine settings has not been validated histopathologically. This study aimed to determine the detection rate of histopathologically validated cortical lesions using combined assessment of multiple MRI sequences in postmortem in situ imaging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Five MRI sequences [phase-sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR), double inversion recovery (DIR), fl

[125I]IPPI for Tau Imaging: Binding Studies in Postmortem Human Alzheimer's Disease Hippocampus-Subiculum and Evaluation of Drug Effects.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of tau tangles that aggregate into neurofibrillary tangles (NFT). This study aims to assess binding of [125I]IPPI, a recently reported imaging probe for pathological, aggregated tau in AD human hippocampus (HP) postmortem brain slices, and measure effects of drugs known to bind to tau, monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), and dual specificity tyrosine-phosphorylation regulated kinase 1A (DYRK1A). Quantitative [125I]IPPI binding was compared between AD (n = 29; 13 male and 16 female) and cognitively normal (CN) (n = 32; 16 male and 16 female

Age estimation by evaluation of osteophytes in thoracic and lumbar vertebrae using postmortem CT images in a modern Japanese population.

Estimation of age at death is important in forensic investigations of unknown remains. There have been several reports on applying the degree of osteophyte formation-an age-related change in the vertebral body-for age estimation; however, this method is not yet established. This study investigated a method for age estimation of modern Japanese individuals using osteophytes measured on CT images. The sample included 250 cadavers (125 males) aged 20-95 years. The degree of osteophyte formation was evaluated as score O (0-5 points), and the degree of fusion of the osteophytes between the upper an

Normal development of costal element ossification centers of sacral vertebrae in the fetal spine: a postmortem magnetic resonance imaging study.

PURPOSE: This postmortem magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study of the fetal spine aimed to describe the timing of appearance, shape, volume, and relative positions of the S1-S3 costal element ossification centers (CEOCs). METHODS: We obtained sagittal 3D dual-echo steady-state with water excitation T2 images of the entire spine in 71 fetuses (gestational ages (GAs), 17-42 weeks). Computed tomography and histological examinations were performed on two fetal specimens (GAs, 21 and 30 weeks) to validate the MR images. The presence/absence of each sacral CEOC was recorded according to the GA. CE
