AIMS: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with tachycardia on orthostasis. Patients frequently report palpitations, presyncope, and fatigue. Conventional therapy is effective in less than 60%. Case reports suggest ivabradine (a selective sinus node blocker, with no effect on blood pressure) may alleviate POTS-related symptoms. This is a retrospective case-series.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome patients prescribed ivabradine were identified from the pharmacy database. Case notes were reviewed and participants completed a symptom assess

We report on two previously healthy patients who developed severe form of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) following an electric injury. Both the patients developed symptoms of orthostatic intolerance in the form of dizziness, fatigue, lightheadedness, and palpitations, weeks to months after electrical injury. Orthostatic intolerance produced considerable functional impairment in these patients. Early recognition of POTS when it occurs after an electrical injury allows for prompt evaluation and management to occur.

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a complex multisystem disorder characterized by orthostatic intolerance and tachycardia and may be triggered by viral infection. Recent reports indicate that 2%-14% of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) survivors develop POTS and 9%-61% experience POTS-like symptoms, such as tachycardia, orthostatic intolerance, fatigue, and cognitive impairment within 6-8 months of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. Pathophysiological mechanisms of post-COVID-19 POTS are not well understood. Current hypotheses include au

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is an autonomic disorder characterized by symptoms such as palpitations, dyspnea, chest discomfort, and lightheadedness affecting various systems. The pathophysiology of POTS is not completely understood due to a variety of symptoms showing that the disease is multifactorial. There is no approved uniform management strategy for POTS and hence, no drug has been approved by the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for it. Ivabradine is an FDA-approved drug for stable symptomatic heart failure (HF) and patients with an ejection fra

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by postural tachycardia in combination with orthostatic symptoms without associated hypotension. Symptoms include light-headedness, palpitations, fatigue, confusion, and anxiety, which are brought on by assuming the upright position and usually relieved by sitting or lying down. Given the associated autonomic dysfunction that occurs with POTS, various perioperative concerns must be considered when providing anesthetic care for such patients. We present an adolescent with POTS who required anesthetic care during poster

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by a sudden onset of orthostatic intolerance upon standing, which may be relieved when lying down. The most common complications associated with POTS are trauma or injury from falling or fainting. Pediatric patients with POTS may have comorbidities that interfere with their quality of life. Careful management of the disorder is essential to prevent injury. POTS management is often misunderstood, which may lead to misdiagnosis and invalidation by health care professionals. This article discusses how POTS affects pediat

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and other forms of autonomic dysfunction are increasingly recognized in patients with histories of physical or psychological trauma. Emerging evidence suggests that trauma-related dysregulation of the autonomic nervous system may manifest as POTS, with hypervigilance and hyperadrenergic states proposed as potential mechanisms. However, the relationship between sexual abuse and subsequent autonomic dysfunction remains unclear. We present a series of patients referred to cardiology for suspected POTS, highlighting clinical features, potential mech

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) represents chronic orthostatic intolerance. Patients usually suffer from presyncopal symptoms, such as lightheadedness, headache, blurred vision, and fatigue. Central hypovolemia, peripheral vascular dysfunction, and a hyperadrenergic state may contribute to the pathogenesis of POTS. It is necessary to comprehensively assess the clinical characteristics, physiological changes, and biochemical markers to select an appropriate therapy. Since the introduction of the concept of individualized treatment for POTS, great progress has been made in the f

POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) is a multisystem disorder characterized by the abnormal autonomic response to an upright posture, causing orthostatic intolerance and excessive tachycardia without hypotension. Recent reports suggest that a significant percentage of COVID-19 survivors develop POTS within 6 to 8 months of infection. Prominent symptoms of POTS include fatigue, orthostatic intolerance, tachycardia, and cognitive impairment. The exact mechanisms of post-COVID-19 POTS are unclear. Still, different hypotheses have been given, including autoantibody production against

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a variant of autonomic cardiovascular disorder characterized by an excessive increase in heart rate upon standing associated with light-headedness, headaches, chest pain, shortness of breath, and brain fog. The etiology of POTS is largely unknown and often debilitating. The 3 major hypotheses about the pathophysiology of POTS are autoimmunity, abnormally increased sympathetic activity, and sympathetic denervation leading to central hypovolemia and reflex tachycardia. Given its heterogeneous nature, it is crucial to understand each component o

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a type of orthostatic intolerance that is characterized by excessive tachycardia and decreased cerebral blood flow in the upright position. This can result in significant symptoms of dizziness and light-headedness that can eventually lead to syncope. In this review, we describe two patients with POTS that varied in their degree of symptoms and treatment. One patient was able to be treated as an outpatient, while the other required hospitalization and extensive medical therapy. We would like to emphasize with this review that POTS is probably

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction presenting as inappropriate sinus tachycardia has been reported to occur following slow pathway ablation for atrioventricular node tachycardia. We report on a series of patients who developed new onset postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) following successful radiofrequency ablation of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT).
METHODS: The study was a retrospective analysis that was approved by our Institutional Review Board. Patients were identified from those seen at our Syncope and Autonomic Disorders Clinic. A total of six patients

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to examine the utility of the acceleration index observed in an electrocardiogram (ECG) for the prediction of the effectiveness of orthostatic training in pediatric patients diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). This investigation focused on children diagnosed with POTS and undergoing orthostatic training at the Department of Pediatrics of Peking University First Hospital from January 2012 to October 2022. Specifically, patients hospitalized from January 2012 to December 2019 were included in the training set (54 cases), wh

Postural hyperventilation has been implicated as a cause of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), yet the precise mechanisms underlying the heightened breathing response remain unclear. This study challenges current hypotheses by revealing that exaggerated peripheral chemoreceptor activity is not the primary driver of postural hyperventilation. Instead, significant contributions from reduced stroke volume and compromised brain perfusion during orthostatic stress were identified. These findings shed light on our understanding of POTS pathophysiology, emphasizing the critical roles o

INTRODUCTION: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is a debilitating disorder. We compared paediatric patients with this dysautonomia presenting with and without peak upright heart rate > 100 beats per minute.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Subjects were drawn from the Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Program database of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia diagnosed between 2007 and 2018. Subjects were aged 12-18 years at diagnosis with demographic data, supine and peak heart rate from 10-minute stand, symptoms, and family history. Patients were divided into "low heart rate" (peak l
