In the management of stone disease, the medical approach concerned with the prevention of stone recurrence is equally as important as the surgical removal of stones. The application of medical approach requires an understanding of the pathophysiology of stone formation. A wide variety of physiological or environmental disturbances have been identified in stone-forming patients. They include hypercalciuria, hypocitraturia, undue urinary acidity and hyperuricosuria. Reliable diagnostic protocols have been developed which are based on the presence of above derangements. The prophylactic treatment

The adsorption properties of microporous carbon materials modified with iron citrate were investigated. The carbon materials were produced based on resorcinol-formaldehyde resin, treated in a microwave assisted solvothermal reactor, and next carbonized in the tube furnace at a temperature of 700 °C under argon atmosphere. Iron citrate was applied as a modifier, added to the material precursor before the synthesis in the reactor, in the quantity enabling to obtain the nanocomposites with C:Fe mass ratio equal to 10:1. Some samples were additionally activated using potassium oxalate or potassium

Magnesium is a potentially relevant factor in kidney stone disease (KSD), particularly in calcium-containing stones. This narrative review summarizes magnesium metabolism, its anti-lithogenic mechanisms, and the current evidence on supplementation in KSD. Magnesium may reduce stone risk through intestinal oxalate binding, inhibition of calcium oxalate crystallization, and increased urinary citrate excretion. A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase (up to April 2026) identified interventional and observational studies evaluating magnesium and urinary or clinical outcomes. Stud

Citrate is a tricarboxylic acid and an intermediate metabolite of Krebs cycle. It contributes to oxidative metabolism of both kidney and liver. Alkaline sodium or potassium salts have the potential to increase alkaline reserve. In the kidney citrate is completely filtered at the glomerulus, undergoing to 10-40% tubular resorption. Renal insufficiency, even early, metabolic acidosis, potassium depletion induce hypocitraturia. Its importance in nephrolithiasis stems from its ability to form soluble complexes with calcium and to interfere with crystal formation, thus exerting a dual inhibition, t

Since the introduction of hematopoietic growth factors, the collection of mobilized stem cells via leukapheresis has widely replaced the harvest of bone marrow in both autologous and allogeneic transplantation settings. We investigated the frequency and the extent of anticoagulant-induced electrolyte changes and the cell-separation-related loss of hemoglobin and platelets. In our study a total of 200 leukaphereses were performed on 60 patients with hematological malignancies. The electrolytes (calcium and potassium) were determined photometrically pre- and post-apheresis. Blood counts were ana

The salt of milk constitutes a small part of milk (8-9 g.L(-1)); this fraction contains calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium for the main cations and inorganic phosphate, citrate and chloride for the main anions. In milk, these ions are more or less associated between themselves and with proteins. Depending on the type of ion, they are diffusible (cases of sodium, potassium and chloride) or partially associated with casein molecules (cases of calcium, magnesium, phosphate and citrate), to form large colloidal particles called casein micelles. Today, our knowledge and understanding concerni

Chronic metabolic acidosis leads to bone-remodelling disorders based on excessive mineral matrix resorption and inhibition of bone formation, but also affects the homeostasis of citrate, which is an essential player in maintaining the acid-base balance and in driving the mineralisation process. This study aimed to investigate the impact of acidosis on the osteogenic properties of bone-forming cells and the effects of citrate supplementation in restoring the osteogenic features impaired by the acidic milieu. For this purpose, human mesenchymal stromal cells were cultured in an osteogenic medium

Twelve fasting normal volunteers received three aspirin dosage forms in a single 325-mg dose in a complete crossover study; the plasma aspirin and salicylic acid levels and the urine salicylic acid and salicyluric acid levels were measured over 10 h. The three dosage forms included an unbuffered tablet and two effervescent solutions, one with sodium bicarbonate-citrate buffer and the other with potassium bicarbonate-citrate buffer. A significantly faster absorption rate was observed with the sodium bicarbonate-citrate buffer, when compared with the potassium bicarbonate-citrate buffer and the

Distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is characterized by a primary defect in proton secretion by α-intercalated cells of the collecting duct, leading to impaired urine acidification and resulting in metabolic acidosis, hypokalemia, and hypercalciuria. Inherited forms of dRTA are currently associated with variants in five genes (SLC4A1, ATP6V1B1, ATP6V0A4, FOXI1, and WDR72), each being associated with specific extra-renal manifestations. Acquired forms can result from autoimmune diseases or drug side effects. Classical complications include nephrolithiasis, nephrocalcinosis, reduced glomerular

Taraxasterol is one of the important constituents of Taraxacum officinale L. (Compositae) with antioxidant potential. The present study was designed to evaluate and compare the antiurolithiatic effects of taraxasterol and potassium citrate in the ethylene glycol induced urolithiatic rat. Urolithiasis was induced by ammonium chloride and ethylene glycol in adult male rats. Taraxasterol (2, 4 and 8 mg/kg) and potassium citrate (2.5 g/kg) were treated for 33 days by gavage. Then, the animals were anesthetized and weighted and blood, urine, liver and kidney sampling were done. The kidney sections

Calcium metabolism and its response to citrate were examined in 51 patients with glaucoma receiving carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (acetazolamide or methazolamide). Metabolic acidosis, hypocitraturia and increased incidence of nephrolithiasis were induced by both drugs. However, the acidosis was milder with methazolamide administration. Normocalciuria was observed in 29 patients and was shown to be a result of low filtered calcium. Renal hypercalciuria in 16 patients was associated with elevated parathyroid hormone but nephrogenic cyclic adenosine monophosphate remained within normal limits. Ci

Quercetin and hyperoside (QH) are the two main constituents of the total flavone glycosides of Flos Abelmoschus manihot, which has been prescribed for treating chronic kidney disease for decades. This study aimed to investigate the effect of QH on calcium oxalate (CaOx) formation in ethylene glycol (EG)-fed rats. Rats were divided into three groups: an untreated stone-forming group, a QH-treated stone-forming group (20 mg/kg/day) and a potassium citrate-treated stone-forming group (potassium citrate was a worldwide-recognized calculi-prophylactic medicine). Ethylene glycol (0.5 %) was administ

Progression of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) in the heterozygous male Han:SPRD rat is dramatically slowed by ingestion of potassium or sodium citrate. This study examined the efficacy of delayed therapy with sodium citrate, the effect of sodium citrate therapy on kidney cortex levels of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta), and the response to calcium citrate ingestion. Rats were provided with citrate salts in their food, and renal clearance, blood pressure, blood chemistry, and survival determinations were made. Sodium citrate therapy was most effective when start

One hundred and fifty exchange transfusions, using citrated donor blood, were investigated to determine the mortality rate from the procedure. One infant died during manipulation of the catheter in the umbilical vein. Four infants died of combined causes including anemia, prematurity and elevated potassium in the donor blood. Sixty-two exchange transfusions were investigated in detail to determine the incidence of clinical disturbances. Vomiting, retching, respiratory distress, convulsions or tetany developed during 23 exchanges. A rapid rate of exchange, elevated potassium in the donor blood,

Nine women with laxative abuse and predominantly ammonium urate renal calculi underwent metabolic studies to identify common chemical abnormalities and determine pathophysiology. The 24-hour urine studies demonstrated marked decreases in volume (902 cm.3), sodium (28 mEq.), citrate (116 mg.) and potassium (21 mEq.). A significant elevation in ammonium urate supersaturation was found compared to control subjects when studied by the computer model EQUIL 2. Of the patients 7 had 1 or more urine specimens positive for phenolphthalein. Gastrointestinal loss of fluid and electrolytes allowed for chr
