Potassium transport was measured in isolated chicken colonocytes using 85Rb+ as a tracer for K+. Rb+ was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. These isolated cells were used to measure uptake of the radioactive tracer 86Rb as an index of changes in K+ content. There was time-dependent tracer uptake in the absence of secretagogue in both one-day-old and adult cells. Kinetic analysis of this uptake revealed two components, a fast one during the first 5 min of incubation and a slower one between 5 and 30 min. Potassium (K+) fluxes across the placenta of rats, at 21 days gestation, fed a low K+ diet or a control diet were studied. An increase in extracellular KCl ([KCl]o) occurs under various pathological conditions in the retina, leading to retinal swelling and possible neuronal damage.
