Measures of tracheal lesions are more discriminatory and reproducible indications of chronic respiratory disease caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum in poultry.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum is the primary causative agent of chronic respiratory disease in poultry, and vaccination is the measure most commonly used for its control. Pathological changes caused by M. gallisepticum are mainly observed in the trachea and air sacs, but assessment of air sac lesions is subjective. Standardized parameters for evaluation of pathological changes, and their reproducibility and discrimination in uninfected and infected groups, are critical when assessing the efficacy of M. gallisepticum vaccination. This study reviewed and critically appraised the published literature

Molecular and pathological investigations of Marek's disease outbreaks in vaccinated poultry farms in Plateau State, North Central-Nigeria.

Marek's disease (MD) is a devastating neoplastic disease of poultry caused by MD virus (MDV). MD is one of the several diseases limiting the thriving Nigerian poultry industry. MD is mostly diagnosed in Nigeria based on history and gross lesions without laboratory investigations leading to underreporting of the disease. This study investigated MD outbreaks in poultry farms using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and histopathology. Tumourous visceral organs were collected from dead chickens presented to veterinary clinics from 110 farms in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria from April 2013 to

Immunobiology of Newcastle Disease Virus and Its Use for Prophylactic Vaccination in Poultry and as Adjuvant for Therapeutic Vaccination in Cancer Patients.

Newcastle disease (ND) is one of the most important diseases of poultry worldwide. In the last decades, molecular research has gained a lot of new information about its causative agent, newcastledisease virus (NDV). In poultry industry, certain strains of NDV have been used for preventive vaccination for more than 60 years. NDV has also been applied to cancer patients with beneficial effects for about 50 years, but this is less well known. The molecular basis for these differential effects of NDV in birds and man have been elucidated in the last decades and are explained in this review. The an

Antimicrobial resistance patterns and high prevalence of the mcr-1 gene in pathogenic Escherichia coli from diseased poultry.

This study assessed the prevalence of the mcr-1 gene, which provides resistance to colistin (polymyxin E), in Escherichia coli strains isolated from sick poultry in the Peshawar, Mardan, and Charsadda regions of Pakistan. Samples were collected from 246 poultry birds showing symptoms such as diarrhoea, respiratory distress, and other systemic infections. After enrichment in Brain Heart Infusion broth, the samples were cultured on selective media containing colistin. The isolated colonies were further cultured on Eosin Methylene Blue agar and analyzed with PCR to detect the mcr-1 gene. The stud

Development and evaluation of a Salmonella typhimurium flagellin based chimeric DNA vaccine against infectious bursal disease of poultry.

Infectious bursal disease (IBD) is an acute immunosuppressive disease of young chicks, caused by a double-stranded RNA virus. VP2 being the major capsid protein of the virus is an ideal vaccine candidate possessing the neutralizing epitopes. The present study involves the use of flagellin (fliC) as a genetic adjuvant to improve the immune response of VP2 based DNA vaccine against IBD. Our findings revealed that birds immunized with plasmid pCIVP2fliC showed robust immune response than pCIVP2 immunized groups. Further, challenge study proved that genetic fusion of fliC and VP2 can provide a com

Distribution of staphylococcal enterotoxin genes among Staphylococcus aureus isolates from poultry and humans with invasive staphylococcal disease.

Food poisoning by Staphylococcus aureus affects hundreds of thousands of people each year. Staphylococcus aureus also causes invasive diseases such as arthritis (in poultry) and septicemia (in poultry and humans). Foodborne disease is caused by the ingestion of a staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE). Enterotoxin has also been associated with other S. aureus illnesses in humans and domestic animals. In this study, polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the staphylococcal enterotoxin genes, SEA, SEB, SEC, SED, and SEE, in S. aureus isolates associated with invasive disease in poultry and humans

Pathogenicity analysis and control strategies to combat avian diseases: mechanisms of increased virulence of Marek's disease virus and the development of vaccines against poultry red mites.

The occurrence of avian diseases has been greatly reduced by improved sanitation on poultry farms and the development of prevention programs through vaccination and other measures. However, the poultry industry still faces several concerns. Marek's disease (MD) has caused significant economic losses to the poultry industry in the past; however, the introduction of vaccines has successfully contributed to a reduction in MD occurrences. Nevertheless, sporadic MD occurrences are still observed, and increased virulence has been reported owing to the changes in viral characteristics. In addition to

Serological detection of Newcastle disease virus in backyard poultry production system in Woliso District South West Shewa, Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Newcastle disease (ND) is one of the most important respiratory viral diseases. The disease is endemic in many parts of Ethiopia. However, there is no clear record about the introduction of the virus to the country (Ethiopia). Hence, detail about the ND is very important in its (ND) control and prevention. Despite these facts, there is no available research work done on ND in the current research area that would help either as references for researchers or that could help in the control and prevention of the disease. Therefore, the objective of this study was to detect the ND virus

Comparative RNA-Seq analysis reveals insights in Salmonella disease resistance of chicken; and database development as resource for gene expression in poultry.

Salmonella, one of the major infectious diseases in poultry, causes considerable economic losses in terms of mortality and morbidity, especially in countries that lack effective vaccination programs. Besides being resistant to diseases, indigenous chicken breeds are also a potential source of animal protein in developing countries. For understanding the disease resistance, an indigenous chicken line Kashmir faverolla, and commercial broiler were selected. RNA-seq was performed after challenging the chicken with Salmonella Typhimurium. Comparative differential expression results showed that fol

Genetic evolution of Newcastle Disease Virus sub-genotype VII.2 isolates, diagnosed from vaccinated poultry farms of Gujarat, India.

Newcastle disease was suspected in 37 commercial poultry farms, including 12 layer and 25 broiler farms in four districts of Gujarat, India. Vaccination had been done in 32 (20 broilers and 12 layers) farms. Tissue samples from each farm were pooled as one sample. In egg embryo inoculation, HA-HI and PCR, respectively, 32/37, 29/37, and 24/37 samples were found positive. Pathotyping by mean death time calculation and primer combination PCR revealed velogenic NDV, which was later confirmed with the presence of the 112-RRQKR*F-117 sequence at the F protein cleavage site. Phylogenetic analysis of

Cross-species transmission potential between wild pigs, livestock, poultry, wildlife, and humans: implications for disease risk management in North America.

Cross-species disease transmission between wildlife, domestic animals and humans is an increasing threat to public and veterinary health. Wild pigs are increasingly a potential veterinary and public health threat. Here we investigate 84 pathogens and the host species most at risk for transmission with wild pigs using a network approach. We assess the risk to agricultural and human health by evaluating the status of these pathogens and the co-occurrence of wild pigs, agriculture and humans. We identified 34 (87%) OIE listed swine pathogens that cause clinical disease in livestock, poultry, wild

Surveillance of avian influenza and Newcastle disease viruses in backyard poultry raised near migratory bird sites in Mato Grosso state, Brazil.

The Pantanal and Cerrado biomes in the state of Mato Grosso contain migratory bird sites in the municipalities of Cáceres and Araguaiana, respectively. The levels of avian influenza (AI) and Newcastle disease (ND) viral activity in backyard poultry at these sites are unknown owing to a lack of studies. Considering the risk of introduction of AI and ND to Brazil from migratory birds, as well as the importance of active surveillance in the detection and prevention of diseases for official control, monitoring in these poultry populations is faster, more practical and cheaper for official service

Potential disease transmission from wild geese and swans to livestock, poultry and humans: a review of the scientific literature from a One Health perspective.

There are more herbivorous waterfowl (swans and geese) close to humans, livestock and poultry than ever before. This creates widespread conflict with agriculture and other human interests, but also debate about the role of swans and geese as potential vectors of disease of relevance for human and animal health. Using a One Health perspective, we provide the first comprehensive review of the scientific literature about the most relevant viral, bacterial, and unicellular pathogens occurring in wild geese and swans. Research thus far suggests that these birds may play a role in transmission of av

Assessing biosecurity practices, movements and densities of poultry sites across Belgium, resulting in different farm risk-groups for infectious disease introduction and spread.

The existing diversity within poultry systems affects the potential risk of infectious disease introduction and spread. Population data on the level of biosecurity and between-farm contacts is scarce, despite its importance for identifying possible routes of disease transmission. A study was carried out in Belgium to investigate and differentiate professional and hobby poultry sites based on their biosecurity levels and farm movements. Questionnaire data from a total of 37 professional poultry farms, 19 hatcheries and 286 hobby poultry sites were analyzed using a combination of a linear scorin

Genotype Diversity of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 Clade 2.3.4.4b in Pennsylvania Poultry During Disease Outbreak from April 2022 to March 2023.

The 2022 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b was one of the major avian influenza outbreaks, leading to multiple spillover events infecting domestic and wild bird flocks, as well as mammals. The sustained spread was a result of viral circulation in wild birds across migratory flyways in North America. Pennsylvania has a significant poultry population that supports both retail and live bird markets. The state also features migratory bird stopovers on the Atlantic flyway, increasing exposure to HPAI infections. This study investigates clinical presentation an
