Since the H7N9 avian influenza virus emerged in China in 2013, there have been five seasonal waves which have shown human infections and caused high fatality rates in infected patients. A multibasic amino acid insertion seen in the HA of current H7N9 viruses occurred through natural evolution and reassortment, and created a high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) virus from the low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) in 2017, and significantly increased pathogenicity in poultry, resulting in widespread HPAI H7N9 in poultry, which along with LPAI H7N9, contributed to the severe fifth seasona

Global poultry production is facing several challenges including a projected increase in global demand for high quality animal proteins and the need to adapt to environmental contrasts including heat stress and the increasing pressure on natural resource (water, land, and energy) availability. Heat stress is one of the most challenging stressor to poultry production because of its strong adverse effects on welfare, production, mortality, and water usage. Most commercial poultry houses worldwide are equipped with a combination of tunnel ventilation and evaporative cooling system (pads, fogging,

Poultry is one of the largest and rapidly growing industries in Pakistan. Avian salmonellosis is among the most prevalent bacterial infections in poultry. A preventive vaccine in chicken is needed against food-borne zoonotic Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium. The surface polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccine and whole-cell killed vaccine candidates were prepared against a poultry isolate of S. Typhimurium followed by immunogenicity evaluation in mice and protection studies in chicken. The O-specific polysaccharide (OSP) antigen of S. Typhimurium was directly conjugated to two carrier

We studied 7 influenza (H5N1) viruses isolated from poultry in western Siberia and the European part of the Russian Federation during July 2005-February 2006. Full genome sequences showed high homology to Qinghai-like influenza (H5N1) viruses. Phylogenetic analysis not only showed a close genetic relationship between the H5N1 strains isolated from poultry and wild migratory waterfowls but also suggested genetic reassortment among the analyzed isolates. Analysis of deduced amino acid sequences of the M2 and neuraminidase proteins showed that all isolates are potentially sensitive to currently a

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses cause a severe and lethal infection in domestic birds. The increasing number of HPAI outbreaks has demonstrated the lack of capabilities to control the rapid spread of avian influenza. Poultry vaccination has been shown to not only reduce the virus spread in animals but also reduce the virus transmission to humans, preventing potential pandemic development. However, existing vaccine technologies cannot respond to a new virus outbreak rapidly and at a cost and scale that is commercially viable for poultry vaccination. Here, we developed modular c

Poultry farming is a rapidly growing agricultural subsector worldwide and plays a significant role in meeting global demand for human protein. In Bangladesh, poultry farming is in developing phase, but it faces major challenges. Where improper temperatures, humidity, gas concentrations, dust levels, and poor ventilation significantly reduce poultry health, egg production, and overall farm profitability. To address these issues, monitoring systems are increasingly being adopted for early detection and continuous assessment of the farm environment. However, in a traditional monitoring system, th

Poultry is a cheap source of animal protein and constituent of diets in Africa. Poultry can serve as a reservoir for Salmonella and cause food-borne infections in humans. This review describes Salmonella contamination of food, poultry, and the farming environment, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and serotypes of Salmonella, as well as the farming systems, antimicrobial use (AMU), hygiene, and husbandry conditions used to rear poultry in Africa. Using the PRISMA (preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis) guidelines, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science databas

Poultry meat and eggs are valuable sources of dietary protein in almost every country in the world. A number of breeding techniques, methods, and technology have been applied to obtain maximum production under different environmental and economic conditions. Indigenous and local breeds share 90 % of the total population of poultry in many developing countries in Asia. However, indigenous chickens are low in productivity. Many studies have found that crossbreeding of exotic with indigenous chickens resulted in birds that performed better, even superior to pure exotic chickens, with respect to b

The exponential increase in global population continues to present an ongoing challenge for livestock producers worldwide to consistently provide a safe, high-quality, and affordable source of protein for consumers. In the last 50 years, the poultry industry has spearheaded this effort thanks to focused genetic and genomic selection for feed-efficient, high-yielding broilers. However, such intense selection for productive traits, along with conventional industry farming practices, has also presented the industry with a myriad of serious issues that negatively impacted animal health, welfare, a

Pullorum disease, caused by the Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum, is a highly contagious disease in the poultry industry, leading to significant economic losses in many developing countries. Due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, immediate attention is required to prevent their endemics and global spreading. To mitigate the prevalence of MDR Salmonella Pullorum infections in poultry farms, it is urgent to develop effective vaccines. Reverse vaccinology (RV) is a promising approach using expressed genomic sequences to find new vaccine targets. The prese

H9N2 avian influenza viruses (AIVs) circulate in poultry throughout much of Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. These viruses cause huge economic damage to poultry production systems and pose a zoonotic threat both in their own right and in the generation of novel zoonotic viruses, for example, H7N9. In recent years, it has been observed that H9N2 viruses have further adapted to gallinaceous poultry, becoming more highly transmissible and causing higher morbidity and mortality. Here, we investigate the molecular basis for this increased virulence, comparing a virus from the 1990s and a contempo

Avian reovirus (ARV) causes a range of diseases in poultry and results in significant economic losses for the poultry industry. To address the epidemic of ARV infection in yellow-feathered broilers in Xinjiang, this study conducted genetic and evolutionary analyses of a chicken-origin ARV field strain, designated ARV xj-1.1. The σC gene of this strain was expressed in vitro using both Escherichia coli and Pichia pastoris systems to compare expression characteristics and immunogenicity. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that ARV xj-1.1 belongs to genotype IV. The σC gene was successfully cloned an

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is the etiologic agent of fowl cholera, a highly contagious and severe disease of poultry causing significant mortality and morbidity throughout the world. All types of poultry are susceptible to fowl cholera. Turkeys are most susceptible to the peracute/acute forms of the disease while chickens are most susceptible to the acute and chronic forms of the disease. The whole genome of the Pm70 strain of P. multocida was sequenced and annotated in 2001. The Pm70 strain is not virulent to chickens and turkeys. In contrast, strains X73 and P1059 are highly virulent

Infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) is a major respiratory pathogen in poultry, and current vaccines pose safety risks or offer limited protection. To develop safer alternatives, we designed four truncated fragments of ILTV glycoproteins gB and gD (designated gBa, gBb, gB, and gD) based on bioinformatic analysis. The gBb and gD were successfully expressed in Escherichia coli (E.coli), and gD also in a baculovirus system. Three recombinant proteins (E.coli-gBb, E.coli-gD, and Bac-gD) showed favorable thermal stability and strong immunogenicity, as confirmed by NanoDSF and ELISPOT assays.

Poultry, including birds such as chicken, duck, turkey, geese, and other game birds is the most widely consumed animal protein globally, with per capita poultry consumption steadily rising in the United States over the past several decades. To meet the demand for poultry, many avenues of improving poultry production have been explored including genetic modification solutions. While genetic modification in many poultry species has been well explored, gene editing in turkey has no research into its application. This study investigated the feasibility of using CRISPR/Cas9 mediated gene editing us

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 viruses are currently endemic in poultry in Egypt. Eradication of the viruses has been unsuccessful due to improper application of vaccine-based control strategies among other preventive measures. The viruses have evolved rapidly with increased bird-to-human transmission efficacy, thus affecting both animal and public health. Subsequent spread of potentially zoonotic low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H9N2 in poultry has also hindered efficient control of avian influenza. The H5N1 viruses acquired enhanced bird-to-human transmissibility by (1) a

The overuse of antibiotics in poultry farming has led to the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens, posing severe threats to animal health and public safety. Salmonella Pullorum (S. Pullorum), a host-specific pathogen targeting poultry, causes high mortality in chicks and disrupts intestinal health. This study evaluated the protective effects of Bifidobacterium bifidum postbiotics (BbP) against S. Pullorum infection, focusing on their mechanisms in regulating pyroptosis, restoring intestinal barrier function, and modulating gut microbiota. Both in vivo (chickens challenged with S. Pulloru
