[Morbidity in the ghettos during the Holocaust].

The environmental conditions and daily life in the ghettos of Europe during the holocaust are reviewed, and their effect on morbidity in different ghettos is scrutinized in an attempt to construct a typical morbidity profile. The outstanding characteristics were: crowding, shortage of basic necessities (such as food, clothing and medications), harsh environmental and sanitary conditions, inclement weather, poor personal hygiene, chronic undernutrition and malnutrition, physical and mental exhaustion. Morbidity was mainly due to infectious diseases, both endemic and epidemic outbreaks with high

The Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis: A Strategy for Poverty Alleviation and Sustainable Development - Perspectives from the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Within the Philippines areas endemic for lymphatic filariasis are in regions with the highest incidence of poverty. Out of a total of 79 provinces, 39 have a higher poverty incidence than the national average and 30 of these 39 provinces are endemic for lymphatic filariasis. DISCUSSION: Recognizing that provinces endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF) are also the poorest provinces, the elimination of lymphatic filariasis in these areas presents significant opportunities to reduce poverty and inequalities in health. The implementation of an effective national programme for the elimi

Addressing mental health deserts: a geographic and economic analysis of mental health service gaps in Houston.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of mental health challenges in the United States, particularly among low-income communities, has highlighted significant disparities in access to mental health services. This study investigated the concept of "mental health deserts," areas with insufficient mental health care providers, in the city of Houston, Texas. By utilizing the Distressed Community Index (DCI) to identify economically disadvantaged areas and sampling Psychology Today's database of over 3,000 licensed therapists in the Houston area to map mental health service availability, this res

The quality of addiction treatment in persistent poverty counties versus non-persistent poverty counties: the role of Medicaid.

Background: Substance use disorders are more prevalent in areas of extreme poverty. Few studies have evaluated the differences in quality of addiction treatment associated with persistent poverty status (counties where at least 20% of residents have been in poverty for 20 years or more) and Medicaid access. Objective: This study aims to (1) investigate whether there is a difference in the quality of addiction treatment between counties identified as persistent poverty counties and those not and (2) determine the effect of Medicaid expansion on quality. Methods: We analyzed data from the National

Predictors of incompletion of immunization among children residing in the slums of Kathmandu valley, Nepal: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Immunization is one of the most effective health interventions averting an estimated 2-3 million deaths every year. In Nepal, as in most low-income countries, infants are immunized with standard WHO recommended vaccines. However, 16.4 % of children did not receive complete immunization by 12 months of age in Nepal in 2011. Studies from different parts of the world showed that incomplete immunization is even higher in slums. The objective of this study was to identify the predictors of incompletion of immunization among children aged 12-23 months living in the slums of Kathmandu Val

Has government aging governance alleviated rural multidimensional relative poverty? Evidence from the China Rural Revitalization Survey.

BACKGROUND: Population aging poses a significant global challenge, particularly in rural areas where it increases economic burdens and living pressures, potentially pushing families into poverty. METHODS: This study utilizes data from the 2020 and 2022 China Rural Revitalization Survey (CRRS) and applies the Alkire-Foster (A-F) method to measure rural multidimensional relative poverty. A fixed effects model is used to systematically examine the mechanisms and impacts of government aging governance on rural multidimensional relative poverty. RESULTS: The analysis yields three key findings: (1

Vitamin D status of tuberculosis patients with diabetes mellitus in different economic areas and associated factors in China.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D could be a mediator in the association between tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM). A large scale multi-center study confirmed that TB patients with DM had significantly lower serum vitamin D level compared with those without DM and reported that DM was a strong independent risk factor for vitamin D deficiency. OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to determine amongst patients with both TB and DM living in different economically defined areas in China: i) their baseline characteristics, ii) their vitamin D status and iii) whether certain baseline characteristic

The social context of syphilis persistence in the southeastern United States.

In light of the racial-ethnic and poverty composition of the United States population and the distribution of syphilis morbidity across population subgroups, it is important to determine how race-ethnicity and poverty jointly and independently affect transmission dynamics of syphilis and other sexually transmitted diseases. Populations of minority race ethnicity and populations of poverty are both marked by youthful age composition and relative scarcity of men, and both populations live in areas of high poverty concentration. Sexually transmitted disease morbidity, particularly syphilis morbid

Poverty, sanitation, and Leptospira transmission pathways in residents from four Brazilian slums.

Residents of urban slums suffer from a high burden of zoonotic diseases due to individual, socioeconomic, and environmental factors. We conducted a cross-sectional sero-survey in four urban slums in Salvador, Brazil, to characterize how poverty and sanitation contribute to the transmission of rat-borne leptospirosis. Sero-prevalence in the 1,318 participants ranged between 10.0 and 13.3%. We found that contact with environmental sources of contamination, rather than presence of rat reservoirs, is what leads to higher risk for residents living in areas with inadequate sanitation. Further, poore

The socioeconomic profile of a Barrett's oesophagus cohort assessed by the 2010 Index of Multiple Deprivation.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have described the relationship between socioeconomic status and oesophageal adenocarcinoma but only one with its precursor condition, Barrett's oesophagus. We therefore investigated such an association. PATIENTS: The majority (88%) of patients diagnosed with Barrett's at Rotherham District General Hospital between 28 April 1978 and 31 August 2012 consented to inclusion in the UK Barrett's Oesophagus Registry. Those residing within Rotherham form the basis of this study. METHODS: We assessed socioeconomic status using the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 scores

Regional disparities in food security and depression among single-person households in the Republic of Korea.

BACKGROUND: Single-person households constitute over 40% of all households in the Republic of Korea and are more vulnerable to food insecurity and depression than multi-person households. There is a lack of research on examining whether regional characteristics are associated with the degree of food insecurity and depression among single-person households. This study aimed to examine the regional disparities in food security and depression among single-person households in the Republic of Korea. METHODS: A total of 227,873 adults from the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey was included in th

AREA-LEVEL SOCIAL AND STRUCTURAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH AND CERVICAL CANCER STAGE AT DIAGNOSIS.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is highly preventable, yet disparities in stage at diagnosis persist. While individual-level factors affect access to screening and diagnostic care, less is known about how area-level social and structural determinants shape stage at diagnosis. Area-based measures offer a multidimensional approach to capturing structural disadvantage but remain underutilized in cervical cancer research. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of 352 patients diagnosed with cervical cancer between 2015 and 2023 at Smilow Cancer Hospital Network at Yale was conducted. Residential add

Climate, health, and living condition crises in the expanding informal settlements and slums of South-West Nigeria: a case report of Ogun and Oyo states.

The rapid expansion of informal settlements and slums in southwestern Nigeria, particularly along the Lagos-Ogun-Oyo corridor, underscores the critical challenges posed by rapid urbanisation and population growth in this major economic hub of West Africa. This corridor, home to key infrastructure, industries, and economic activities, has seen a significant rise in unplanned communities due to its economic opportunities. In particular, Ogun and Oyo states, both sharing borders with Lagos, have become hotspots of these communities, characterised by inadequate housing, poor sanitation, unsafe dri

Rickettsial Infections Causing Acute Febrile Illness in Urban Slums, Brazil.

We conducted enhanced acute febrile illness surveillance in an urban slum community in Salvador, Brazil. We found that rickettsial infection accounted for 3.5% of urgent care visits for acute fever. Our results suggest that rickettsiae might be an underrecognized, treatable cause of acute febrile illness in impoverished urban populations in Brazil.

Prevention, control and management of leptospirosis in India: an evidence gap map.

Leptospirosis is an emerging public health problem in India. We developed an evidence gap map (EGM) on prevention, control and management of leptospirosis in India to inform research priorities. The EGM framework was developed in consultation with stakeholders and noted key parameters to influence state and national level research priorities. We searched six electronic databases and three relevant websites and included 27 studies (humans, 23; animals, 4; both, 0). Most studies (17/27 [63%]) were from three high-burden states. Controlled clinical trials (non-randomised, 6/27 [22%]; randomised,
