BACKGROUND: Preconception care is an essential reproductive health intervention aimed at reducing preventable maternal and neonatal risks. Despite its significance, utilisation in low- and middle-income settings remains low. This study examined determinants of PCC utilisation among women of reproductive age in Ghana, applying Andersen's Behavioural Model.
METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional design was used, involving 464 women aged 15-49 years in the Koforidua Municipality. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analysed with descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and

BACKGROUND: Reproductive life planning has become an essential element in programs designed to promote preconceptional care and increase utilization of effective contraceptive methods. This study sought to determine if women have reproductive life plans and what they think women should do to prepare for pregnancy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Indigent English-speaking women in a family planning clinic were asked individually about their reproductive life plans, preparations needed for pregnancy, and the relative health risks of pregnancy compared to oral contraceptives.
RESULTS: Of the 250 women i

Background: Maternal phenylketonuria (PKU), a metabolic disorder caused by defective phenylalanine hydroxylase activity, requires strict lifelong dietary management to prevent toxic phenylalanine accumulation. During pregnancy, non-adherence to a low-phenylalanine diet can lead to maternal PKU syndrome, resulting in severe neonatal complications, including microcephaly, congenital heart defects, and growth restrictions. Despite advances in metabolic management and preconception care guidelines, adherence remains a significant challenge, particularly among adults transitioning out of pediatric

Severe maternal morbidity and mortality continue to increase in the United States, largely owing to chronic and newly diagnosed medical comorbidities. Interconception care, or care and management of medical conditions between pregnancies, can improve chronic disease control before, during, and after pregnancy. It is a crucial and time-sensitive intervention that can decrease maternal morbidity and mortality and improve overall health. Despite these potential benefits, interconception care has not been well implemented by the primary care community. Furthermore, there is a lack of guidelines fo

INTRODUCTION: Preconception care involves measures to enhance a woman's physical, psychological, and nutritional health before pregnancy. Despite various observational studies assessing healthcare practitioners' knowledge of preconception care in East Africa, the overall pooled knowledge level remains unclear, and the studies often report inconsistent associated factors. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the aggregated knowledge of preconception care among healthcare providers in East Africa and identify influencing factors.
METHOD: We searched studies using PubMed,

OBJECTIVES: Women comprise approximately 20% of all adults living with spinal cord injury (SCI), and incidence of SCI among women continues to increase annually. Despite the profound impact of SCI on women in their reproductive years, there is a paucity of literature on the unique health care needs and concerns in this population. We examined the health care experiences of these patients, spanning the preconception to postpartum period.
METHODS: Data was obtained from a large online observational questionnaire examining reproductive health outcomes of people with SCI between 2019 and 2021. Ov

Preconception care (PCC) encompasses a set of actions taken before pregnancy to support the health and well-being of women before conception to improve maternal and child health (MCH) outcomes. The utilization of PCC services is influenced by multifaceted factors that can either enable or impede women's capacity to access and utilize them effectively. This scoping review examined the barriers and facilitators influencing the utilization of PCC services among women of reproductive age (15-49 years) at both individual and community levels. Through an extensive review of published articles from 2

BACKGROUND: Preconception care aims to improve both maternal and child health in the short as well as long term, along with providing health benefits to adolescents, women, and men, whether or not they plan to become parents. However, there is limited evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions for improving preconception health in population-based settings. To accumulate evidence in this field, this study focused on the concept of health literacy, and aimed to develop a self-report health literacy scale in Japanese, focusing on preconception care.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sect

BACKGROUND: Optimal glycemic control prior to and during early pregnancy is essential in diabetic women.
CASES: Two cases of fetal anencephaly occurred in diabetic women who conceived with medical technical assistance but did not receive preconception counseling. Both women had poor glycemic control periconceptually, as evidenced by elevated glycosylated hemoglobin determinations in the early first trimester. Targeted sonographic evaluations in the second trimester revealed both fetuses to be anencephalic. Both women terminated their pregnancies.
CONCLUSION: Women with diabetes should be enc

BACKGROUND: Preconception care (PCC) is crucial for preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes, as emphasized by WHO. However, its implementation in Ethiopia has been recent, despite the country having one of the highest maternal and perinatal mortality rates in the world. Previous studies on PCC were conducted before the national PCC guidelines were introduced, during a time of inconsistent care.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of PCC utilization and identify the factors influencing its use in the Sidama Region of Ethiopia, following the implementation of the national guide

Preconception care (PCC) is an important preventive strategy for improving maternal and child health, yet its routine delivery in primary care remains inconsistent, particularly for populations experiencing inequities. We explored primary care providers' perspectives on barriers to and enablers of providing PCC to African migrant and refugee women in Victoria, Australia. Eleven primary care providers (four general practitioners, four practice or refugee health nurses, and three maternal and child health nurses) participated in semi-structured interviews. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, d

BACKGROUND: It remains a challenge to promote reproductive healthcare behaviors-including preconception care-among emerging adults. To effectively influence behavioral changes among emerging adults, it is necessary to understand their behavior according to their psychological steps.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the distribution of preconception care behavioral stages among emerging adults, using the framework of the precaution adoption process model (PAPM), and to examine factors associated with each stage.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study used an online convenience sample of 9

BACKGROUND: Maternal and neonatal mortality remain significant global challenges, with 287,000 pregnancy-related deaths in 2020 and a neonatal mortality rate of 17 per 1,000 live births in 2019. Preconception care (PCC) can mitigate these outcomes, yet low uptake persists. Unintended pregnancies and risky preconception behaviors (e.g., smoking, poor folic acid intake) exacerbate health disparities, underscoring the need to understand determinants of PCC knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP).
METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the determinants of KAP regarding PCC a

INTRODUCTION: Preconception care (PCC) has emerged as a key component of the maternal continuum of care worldwide, focusing on reducing poor pregnancy outcomes. Improving services requires addressing opportunities and challenges within the health system, but in Ethiopia, it is often neglected. Hence, this study explores the awareness, experiences, challenges, and opportunities related to PCC services in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia.
METHODS: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study involving 21 in-depth interviews with mothers who experienced adverse pregnancy outcomes and health care provi

BACKGROUND: Preconception care (PCC) aims to address health risks before conception for better pregnancy outcomes. Effective PCC starts before pregnancy and involves interventions to improve well-being and prevent adverse outcomes. Unintended pregnancies and pre-existing illnesses increase risks. Early provision of care is crucial, as fetal development can be affected early. Improving women's knowledge and access to PCC is essential for optimal maternal and child health in Saudi Arabia.
METHODOLOGY: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia to assess knowledge, attitu

BACKGROUND: Preconception care (PCC) is essential for women with epilepsy (WWE) to reduce teratogenic risks and improve maternal and fetal outcomes. However, many WWE do not receive adequate counseling. Community pharmacists are well positioned to support PCC due to their accessibility, but their readiness for this role remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To assess self-efficacy, counseling depth, perceived barriers, and attitudes toward PCC among community pharmacists compared with perinatal-certified hospital pharmacists, and to identify modifiable factors to enhance community pharmacist participat
