The association between violence victimization and subsequent unplanned pregnancy among adolescent girls in Uganda: Do primary schools make a difference?

Violence victimization is a risk factor for adolescent pregnancy in high-income, low violence prevalence countries, but longitudinal data are lacking from settings where violence and adolescent pregnancy are common, including sub-Saharan Africa. We also know little about contextual factors which modify this association. We analyzed data from the Contexts of Violence in Adolescence Cohort (CoVAC) study in Luwero District, Uganda. Primary students in 42 schools completed surveys in 2014 (Wave 1) and 2018 (Wave 2). Our outcome was unplanned pregnancy. Our exposure was violence victimization, incl

A comparative cross-sectional study of planned and unplanned pregnancies, their outcomes, predictors, and health-seeking behaviours among women in Odisha, India.

BACKGROUND: Unplanned pregnancy continues to pose a major challenge to public health, frequently resulting in negative maternal outcomes and delayed healthcare utilization. In developing nations, its occurrence is influenced by restricted access to contraception, cultural and societal norms, and inadequate awareness of reproductive health. This study primarily aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with unplanned pregnancies with a comparative group of planned pregnancies. Secondary objectives included exploring pregnancy outcomes and health-seeking behavior in unplanned pregnan

Ultrasonographic placental edematous changes as predictive markers of unplanned preterm birth in post-Fontan pregnancies: A single-center observational study.

AIM: Fontan surgery is a palliative procedure commonly performed for functional single-ventricle heart diseases. Fontan circulation is characterized by elevated central venous pressure and low cardiac output. It causes placental hypoxia, which could lead to poor obstetric outcomes. During post-Fontan pregnancies, ultrasonography may detect abnormal appearance of the placenta. We have focused on higher incidences of unexpected onset of labor when this ultrasonographic finding is present. In this study, we aimed to investigate whether this finding could be an indicator of premature delivery befo

Unplanned pregnancy and subsequent psychological distress in partnered women: a cross-sectional study of the role of relationship quality and wider social support.

BACKGROUND: Research into the impact of unintended pregnancy on the wellbeing of women tends to focus on pregnancies ending in either termination or lone motherhood. Unintended pregnancy is common in partnered women, but little is known about the association between unintended pregnancy and postpartum affective disorders, such as depression and anxiety in this group. Poor relationship quality and lack of social support are considered risk factors for psychological distress (PD). We examined the association between unplanned motherhood and subsequent PD in partnered women, for whom evidence is

Association between age at first sexual intercourse and knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding reproductive health and unplanned pregnancy: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Age at first sexual intercourse (AFSI) is decreasing among adolescents in developed nations. An early sexual debut has been associated, to some extent, with multiple sexual partners, infrequent use of condoms, unplanned pregnancy, unsafe abortion, and sexually transmitted disease and human immunodeficiency virus infection. Unplanned pregnancy among adolescents has both physical and social adverse effects. METHODS: In total, 78,400 self-administered anonymous questionnaires were distributed to college students in seven cities in China to determine the age at which Chinese college s

Feelings Matter: Predicting Postpartum Depression Symptoms from Pregnancy Planning and Emotional Reaction to Pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Both emotional reaction to pregnancy and pregnancy intention have been independently found to predict postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS). However, while pregnancy intention has been widely studied, there is minimal research on emotional reaction to pregnancy, and even less research on how these two factors interact. METHODS: Data from the 2016-2021 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS) survey in the state of Maine were analyzed for this study. Weighted logistic regressions were performed to predict both PDS and negative emotional reactions to pregnancy, with Odds

Unintended pregnancy: Risk factors and perinatal outcomes in a nulliparous population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that unintended pregnancies are associated with late prenatal care and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Unintended pregnancy in nulliparous individuals who establish early prenatal care is of particular interest because outcomes in these pregnancies are not confounded by outcomes from prior births or late initiation of prenatal care. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate maternal risk factors and perinatal outcomes associated with unintended pregnancies in a nulliparous population who established early prenatal care. STUDY DESIGN: This is a
