Prevalence and determinants of prehypertension in a Japanese general population: the Jichi Medical School Cohort Study.

It has been reported that subjects with prehypertension (pre-HT) (systolic blood pressure [SBP] 120-139 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure [DBP] 80-89 mmHg) have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). We evaluated the prevalence and determinants of pre-HT in a Japanese general population. We enrolled 4,706 males and 7,342 females aged 18 to 90 years whose BPs were measured at baseline. The subjects' BPs were classified as follows: normotension (NT: SPB/DBP < 120/80 mmHg), pre-HT (120/80-139/89 mmHg), and hypertension (HT: > or = 140/90 mmHg or treated hypertension). The prevalenc

Progression from Prehypertension to Hypertension and Risk of Gastrointestinal Cancer-A Nationwide Health-Screening Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and is associated with gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. However, the association between prehypertension and cancer risk remains uncertain. We investigated the association of progression from prehypertension to hypertension with the risk of GI cancers. Methods: We analyzed a Korean health-screening cohort with prehypertension. Blood pressure (BP) at two consecutive screenings defined three groups: reversion to normotension, persistence of prehypertension, and progression to hypertension. Cause-specific Cox prop

Severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a risk factor for developing hypertension from prehypertension.

BACKGROUND: There is little published evidence about the role of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the progression from prehypertension to hypertension. This study was conducted to investigate the association of NAFLD and its severity with the risk of hypertension developing from prehypertension. METHODS: The study cohort comprised 25,433 participants from the Kailuan study with prehypertension at baseline; those with excessive alcohol consumption and other liver diseases were excluded. NAFLD was diagnosed by ultrasonography and stratified as mild, moderate, or severe. Univariable

Rapid infant weight gain and prenatal maternal depression are associated with prehypertension/hypertension before age 9.

Early life prevention of obesity and associated metabolic disease is necessary to address the current obesity epidemic. Latino children have a higher risk of obesity, and associated comorbidities such as hypertension than Caucasian children. This study focuses on perinatal childhood and maternal risk factors associated with prehypertension and hypertension prior to age 9 in an urban Latino cohort. A cohort of low income, US born Latino children (n = 131) in San Francisco was followed from birth. Annual assessments were conducted including child dietary intake, anthropometrics, and blood pressu

Prehypertension increases the risk of atherosclerosis in drug-naïve Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

PURPOSE: Hypertension is a risk factor of atherosclerotic diseases. However, the importance of prehypertension in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is controversial. The aim of this study was to examine association between prehypertension, hypertension and atherosclerosis in T2DM. METHODS: We recruited 179 Japanese patients with T2DM, who never took any medication for diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, or atherosclerosis. Intima-media thickness (IMT) of common carotid artery was evaluated by high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography. RESULTS: Multiple regression analysis

Masked hypertension and prehypertension: diagnostic overlap and interrelationships with left ventricular mass: the Masked Hypertension Study.

BACKGROUND: Masked hypertension (MHT) and prehypertension (PHT) are both associated with an increase in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, relative to sustained normotension. This study examined the diagnostic overlap between MHT and PHT, and their interrelationships with left ventricular (LV) mass index (LVMI), a marker of cardiovascular end-organ damage. METHODS: A research nurse performed three manual clinic blood pressure (CBP) measurements on three occasions over a 3-week period (total of nine readings, which were averaged) in 813 participants without treated hypertension from the Masked

Prehypertension status, cardiometabolic risks, and decreased baroreflex sensitivity are linked to sympathovagal imbalance in salt-preferring individuals.

Salt preference has been reported to cause sympathovagal imbalance (SVI) and prehypertension. We investigated the role of inflammation, insulin resistance (IR), hyperlipidemia, and oxidative stress (OS) in genesis of SVI and cardiovascular (CV) risks in salt-preferring prehypertensives. The subjects were divided into no-salt-preferring (NSP, n = 87) and salt-preferring (SP, n = 89) group based on their preference for salted food. Body mass index (BMI), blood pressure (BP) variability parameters including baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), heart rate variability (HRV) indices, autonomic function tes

Auricular acupuncture for prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension: study protocol for a pilot multicentre randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension, a worldwide public health problem, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and kidney disease, and the medical and economic burden of hypertension is increasing. Auricular acupuncture has been used to treat various diseases, including hypertension. Several studies have shown that auricular acupuncture treatment decreases blood pressure in patients with hypertension; however, the scientific evidence is still insufficient. Therefore, we aimed to perform a randomised controlled clinical trial in patients with prehypertension and stage 1 hypertension to evaluate the eff

Prevalence of hypertension and prehypertension among children and adolescents in a semi-urban area of Uyo Metropolis, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: In the past, Hypertension in childhood was not considered a problem but in the last few decades, it has gradually become a source of concern especially as children are known to maintain their blood pressures into adulthood. Therefore, hypertensive children are at risk of developing cardiovascular complications earlier in adulthood. In our own environment, the prevalence of hypertension in children is undocumented, hence the purpose of this study. METHODS: Two hundred children aged between 3-17 years were recruited into this study from two public schools-one primary, one secondar

Association of steatotic liver disease with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality among prehypertensive or hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND: Prehypertension and hypertension often coexist with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) during the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD). International academic liver societies have recently reached a consensus to replace NAFLD with the new term 'steatotic liver disease' (SLD). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the impact of different SLD subtypes on all-cause and CVD mortality in individuals with prehypertension or hypertension. METHODS: We included 6074 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2003-18). The US fatty liver index was used as

Meditation smartphone application effects on prehypertensive adults' blood pressure: Dose-response feasibility trial.

OBJECTIVE: Essential hypertension (EH) is the most common chronic disease in the United States and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Lifestyle interventions (e.g., diet, exercise, stress management) to reduce blood pressure (BP) are often complex with varying effectiveness. Breathing awareness meditation (BAM) is a stress management strategy with encouraging effects on BP, though widespread dissemination is hampered by the lack of an easy-to-use methodology to train and monitor BAM practices. A smartphone application (Tension Tamer [TT]) that implements BAM and tracks adherence has sho

The association between low blood lead levels and the prevalence of prehypertension among nonhypertensive adults in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Low-level lead exposure has been associated with increases in blood pressure (BP) and impairment of the cardiovascular system. Prehypertension is not categorized as a disease currently; however, individuals with untreated prehypertension are known to be at increased risk of progression to hypertension and mortality caused by cardiovascular disease. We investigated the association between blood lead levels below the threshold for the harmful effects of lead and the prevalence of prehypertension in Korean adults. METHODS: A total of 8,493 participants (3,945 men and 4,548 women) wer

Epithelial sodium channel inhibition by amiloride on blood pressure and cardiovascular disease risk in young prehypertensives.

Overactivity of the epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is considered to be one mechanism underlying obesity-related blood pressure (BP) elevation. In an open-labeled, nonplacebo-controlled clinical trial (Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT-01308983), the authors aimed to comprehensively evaluate the effects of amiloride monotherapy, an ENaC blocker, on BP and cardiovascular risk in young adults with prehypertension (n=17). The mean body mass index of participants was 28.45±1.30 kg/m(2) . Following 10 mg daily amiloride for 4 weeks, peripheral systolic BP (SBP), central SBP, and carotid-radial pulse wave ve
