Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) leads to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), the most common preventable cause of neurodevelopmental impairment. The classical narrative attributes the clinical picture of FASD exclusively to direct ethanol-induced brain injury. In the present review, we argue that this perspective is incomplete and leads to diagnostic errors, most often to the misdiagnosis of ADHD in children who in fact have FASD. We propose that, alongside the direct neurotoxicity of ethanol, an important and clinically under-recognized complementary mechanism is gut-brain axis dysfunctio

OBJECTIVES: (1) To evaluate maternal and fetal outcome after motor-vehicle injury during pregnancy. (2) To determine if there was prenatal care provider counseling for seat belt use.
METHODS: Retrospective chart analysis of materno-fetal outcome following motor vehicle injury in 728 pregnant women between 2009 and 2012. Women attending antenatal clinics over these years were asked if they were counseled regarding correct seat belt use by prenatal health care providers during their antenatal visits.
RESULTS: In these pregnant women, 80 (11%) sustained minor injuries/sprains. 648 women (89%) h

Neuropathologic evidence of prenatal brain damage, chiefly in cerebral white matter, was found in 25% of infants who died at 7 days of age or less, with a total of ten preterm (16%) and 12 term (48%) infants among the 89 subjects studied. Few clinical features distinguished infants with prenatal injury from those without such injuries. Apgar scores were low, seizures were rare, and acute intracranial hemorrhage occurred equally often in both groups. Few pregnancies were entirely normal, but hydramnios was the only factor that occurred more often in prenatally injured infants, a statistically s

Exposure to prenatal maternal stress impacts adult behavioral outcomes and has been suggested as a risk factor for chronic pain. However, the neurobiological mechanisms implicated are not well-characterized. In this study, we analyzed the effect of a prenatal maternal stress on the development of neuropathic pain-related behaviours and gene expression in the frontal cortex and hippocampus in adult offspring following chronic constriction injury of the sciatic nerve in male and female CD1 mice. Nerve injury-induced mechanical hypersensitivity was amplified in both male and female prenatally-str

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors that predict or are correlated with symptoms of depression and anxiety in 10-year-olds.
METHOD: Women and their offspring were followed from the fourth prenatal month through 10 years. There were 636 mother-child pairs at 10 years, a follow-up rate of 83% of the birth cohort. Cognitive, psychological, sociodemographic, and environmental factors were measured at each phase. High depression and anxiety were defined as having a number of symptoms >1 SD above the mean for each measure. These measures were combined to represent high depression and/or anxiety (D/A) at

We previously found that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) ameliorated the dysfunction of central chemoreception caused by prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (CSE). In the present study, we further explored whether the parafacial respiratory group (pFRG) is involved in the protection of central chemoreception by H2S against prenatal CSE-induced injury. We found that NaHS, a donor of H2S, restored the expression of Phox2b, which was downregulated by prenatal CSE, in the pFRG region of neonatal rats. NaHS also relieved the prenatal CSE-induced excitatory synapse disturbance in the pFRG region of neonatal ra

BACKGROUND: Health care providers can more effectively prevent fetal alcohol syndrome and prenatal alcohol exposure if they know more about mothers who have children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or some characteristics of FAS.
METHODS: We conducted two retrospective case-control studies of Northern Plains Indian children with FAS and some characteristics of FAS diagnosed from 1981 to 1993 by using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), code 760.71. We compared mothers who had children with FAS or some characteristics of FAS with mo

Breech presentation occurs in a small number of term pregnancies and can result in increased neonatal morbidity. Genital trauma, although uncommon, is a possible complication of footling breech presentation, especially when maternal presentation for cesarean section is delayed. One such case is that of a suspected 35-week gestational-age male neonate born via emergency cesarean section for footling breech. The mother had a history of polysubstance abuse and received no prenatal care due to her unawareness of the pregnancy until a delayed presentation at labor and delivery. At delivery, the neo

Zika, a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has been found in 87 countries and territories. Global outbreaks peaked in 2016. Prenatal infection of Zika virus was found to be associated with microcephaly, arthrogryposis, intracranial calcifications, fetal growth restriction, and fetal demise. The most severely affected children were diagnosed with congenital Zika syndrome, which impacts thousands worldwide. With no approved treatment or preventative measures for Zika, future viral outbreaks have the potential to cause epidemic levels of prenatal brain injury, as seen over the past 70 years. Therefore, t

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a common chronic lung disease in infants and the most frequent adverse outcome of premature birth, despite major efforts to minimize injury. It is thought to result from aberrant repair response triggered by either prenatal or recurrent postnatal injury to the lungs during development. Intrauterine inflammation is an important risk factor for prenatal lung injury, which is also increasingly linked to BPD. However, the specific mechanisms remain unclear. This review summarizes clinical and animal research linking intrauterine inflammation to BPD. We assess ho

We previously demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S) protected neonatal rat medulla oblongata from prenatal cigarette smoke exposure (CSE) via anti-apoptotic effect. The present work further investigated the involvement of anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of H2S in the protection. Pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into NaCl, CSE, CSE + NaHS (a donor of H2S) and NaHS groups. All the tests were performed with corresponding neonatal rats. Nissl staining revealed that NaHS treatment ameliorated neuronal chromatolysis in the hypoglossal nucleus and nucleus ambiguus re

Nasal problems in children are very common. The factors that affect the embryologic development have been discussed. Injuries that occur in prenatal, natal, and postnatal periods affect normal development. Prompt treatment of minor injuries is necessary to prevent airway problems later. The "wait and see" attitude toward nasal deformity is ill advised. X-ray findings are not conclusive, as the nasal pyramid in a child is largely cartilaginous. Obstructive nasal breathing can result in facial asymmetry, malocclusion, and cardiopulmonary problems. Allergy and sinusitis are frequently causes of o

Abstract. The aim of this study is to clarify the timing of brain injuries in preterm infants who later developed West syndrome. We assessed the timing of brain insults with serial EEG recordings beginning immediately after birth in preterm infants less than 33 weeks of gestational age. The timing of brain insult was assessed by considering EEG findings in relation to the time of birth. The timing was considered prenatal if an EEG immediately after birth already showed chronic stage abnormalities, perinatal if it showed acute stage abnormalities, and postnatal if it was normal and a later EEG

BACKGROUND: Prenatally transmitted viruses can cause severe damage to the developing brain. There is unexplained variability in prenatal brain injury and postnatal neurodevelopmental outcomes, suggesting disease modifiers. Discordant outcomes among dizygotic twins could be explained by genetic susceptibly or protection. Among several well-recognized threats to the developing brain, Zika is a mosquito-borne, positive-stranded RNA virus that was originally isolated in Uganda and spread to cause epidemics in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In the Americas, the virus caused congenital Zika syndrom

Delivery room emergencies due to birth injuries are serious, usually unexpected, and can be distressing situations that necessitate immediate action to reduce neonatal morbidity and prevent neonatal mortality. Birth injuries requiring immediate, urgent care in the delivery room are uncommon, hence knowledge of obstetric risk factors and prenatal conditions linked to birth injury is an important first step in the management of affected neonates. Furthermore, immediate recognition of injury and quick action upon delivery is essential in order to achieve the best possible outcomes. This chapter b

New therapeutic strategies are needed to protect neonates, especially premature newborns, against brain injury and associated neurobehavioral deficits. The role of pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially IL-1β, in the pathophysiological pathway leading to neonatal brain damage is increasingly recognized and represents an attractive therapeutic target. We investigated the therapeutic potential of postnatal systemic administration of the interleukin (IL)-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra) in an animal model of perinatal brain injury using the insults most common to human neonates, i.e. prenatal expos

Cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) dysfunction leads to progressive exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, resulting in difficulty in the secretion of digestive enzymes and subsequent malabsorption of nutrients. Case reports have described preserved pancreatic function with prenatal elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI) exposure. However, little is known about pancreatic function and injury as ETI exposure decreases postnatally. Here, we discuss four infants with cystic fibrosis (CF) who were prenatally exposed to ETI, with pancreatic function ranging from preserved to mil

Prenatal exposure to methamphetamine (METH) is an issue of global concern due to its adverse effects on offspring, particularly its impact on liver health, an area still not fully understood. Inulin, a recognized prebiotic, is thought to potentially ameliorate these developmental disorders and toxic injuries in progeny. To investigate the effects of prenatal METH exposure on the liver and the role of gut microbiota, we established a murine model, the subjects of which were exposed to METH prenatally and subsequently treated with inulin. Our findings indicate that prenatal METH exposure causes
